    Waters flowing in streams and rivers have the ability to scour channel beds, to carry particles (heavier than water) and to deposit materials. This phenomenon of sediment transport can affect substantially the design of reservoirs. The paper describes four case studies of siltation which rendered useless water storage structures in less than 25 years. Although each dam had advanced structural features, the hydrology of the catchment and sediment transport processes were not properly taken into account. The study highlights practical situations in which a reservoir must be analysed as a complete system, taking into account structural features, hydraulics, hydrology, sediment transport, catchment erosion and catchment management. The case studies may used as teaching examples to increase student interest on the significance of sediment transport problems and to emphasise the design procedure to professionals. They may serve also to alert the community at large to basic errors caused by improper soil conservation policy and the inability to predict sediment-load process

    Statistical analysis on testing of an entangled state based on Poisson distribution framework

    A hypothesis testing scheme for entanglement has been formulated based on the Poisson distribution framework instead of the POVM framework. Three designs were proposed to test the entangled states in this framework. The designs were evaluated in terms of the asymptotic variance. It has been shown that the optimal time allocation between the coincidence and anti-coincidence measurement bases improves the conventional testing method.     Successful control of a hospital-wide outbreak of OXA-48 producing Enterobacteriaceae in the Netherlands, 2009 to 2011

    On 31 May 2011, after notification of Klebsiella pneumoniae(KP)(OXA-48);(CTX-M-15) in two patients, nosocomial transmission was suspected in a Dutch hospital. Hospital-wide infection control measures and an outbreak investigation were initiated. A total of 72,147 patients were categorised into groups based on risk of OXA-48 colonisation or infection, and 7,527 were screened for Enterobacteriaceae(OXA-48) by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Stored KP isolates (n=408) were retrospectively tested for OXA-48 and CTX-M-1 group extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL). 285 KP isolates from retrospective and prospective patient screening were genotyped by amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP). 41 isolates harbouring different Enterobacteriaceae species were analysed by plasmid multilocus sequence typing (pMLST). No nosocomial transmission of Enterobacteriaceae(OXA-48) was detected after 18 July 2011. Enterobacteriaceae(OXA-48) were found in 118 patients (KP (n=99), Escherichia coli (n=56), >= 1 Enterobacteriaceae(OXA-48) species (n=52)),of whom 21 had clinical infections. 39/41 (95%) of OXA-48 containing plasmids were identical in pMLST. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of KPOXA-48 and E. coli(OXA-48) for imipenem and meropenem ranged from = 16 mg/L, and 153/157 (97%) had MIC >0.25mg/L for ertapenem. AFLP identified a cluster of 203 genetically linked isolates (62 KPOXA-48;(CTX-M15); 107 KPCTX-M-15; 34 KPOXA-48). The 'oldest' KPCTX-M-15 and KPOXA-48 clonal types originated from February 2009 and September 2010, respectively. The last presumed outbreak-related KPOXA-48 was detected in April 2012. Uncontrolled transmission of KP (CTX-M-15) evolved into a nosocomial outbreak of KPOXA-48; CTX-M15 with large phenotypical heterogeneity. Although the outbreak was successfully controlled, the contribution of individual containment measures and of the hospital relocating into a new building just before outbreak notification was impossible to quantify

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Discrete choice experiments (DCEs) allow systematic assessment of preferences by asking respondents to choose between scenarios. We conducted a labelled discrete choice experiment with realistic choices to investigate patients' trade-offs between the expected health gains and the burden of testing in surveillance of Barrett esophagus (BE).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Fifteen choice scenarios were selected based on 2 attributes: 1) type of test (endoscopy and two less burdensome fictitious tests), 2) frequency of surveillance. Each test-frequency combination was associated with its own realistic decrease in risk of dying from esophageal adenocarcinoma. A conditional logit model was fitted.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Of 297 eligible patients (155 BE and 142 with non-specific upper GI symptoms), 247 completed the questionnaire (84%). Patients preferred surveillance to no surveillance. Current surveillance schemes of once every 1–2 years were amongst the most preferred alternatives. Higher health gains were preferred over those with lower health gains, except when test frequencies exceeded once a year. For similar health gains, patients preferred video-capsule over saliva swab and least preferred endoscopy.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This first example of a labelled DCE using realistic scenarios in a healthcare context shows that such experiments are feasible. A comparison of labelled and unlabelled designs taking into account setting and research question is recommended.</p

    Grafted ionomer complexes and their effect on protein adsorption on silica and polysulfone surfaces

    We have studied the formation and the stability of ionomer complexes from grafted copolymers (GICs) in solution and the influence of GIC coatings on the adsorption of the proteins β-lactoglobulin (β-lac), bovine serum albumin (BSA), and lysozyme (Lsz) on silica and polysulfone. The GICs consist of the grafted copolymer PAA28-co-PAPEO22 {poly(acrylic acid)-co-poly[acrylate methoxy poly(ethylene oxide)]} with negatively charged AA and neutral APEO groups, and the positively charged homopolymers: P2MVPI43 [poly(N-methyl 2-vinyl pyridinium iodide)] and PAH∙HCl160 [poly(allylamine hydrochloride)]. In solution, these aggregates are characterized by means of dynamic and static light scattering. They appear to be assemblies with hydrodynamic radii of 8 nm (GIC-PAPEO22/P2MVPI43) and 22 nm (GIC-PAPEO22/PAH∙HCl160), respectively. The GICs partly disintegrate in solution at salt concentrations above 10 mM NaCl. Adsorption of GICs and proteins has been studied with fixed angle optical reflectometry at salt concentrations ranging from 1 to 50 mM NaCl. Adsorption of GICs results in high density PEO side chains on the surface. Higher densities were obtained for GICs consisting of PAH∙HCl160 (1.6 ÷ 1.9 chains/nm2) than of P2MVPI43 (0.6 ÷ 1.5 chains/nm2). Both GIC coatings strongly suppress adsorption of all proteins on silica (>90%); however, reduction of protein adsorption on polysulfone depends on the composition of the coating and the type of protein. We observed a moderate reduction of β-lac and Lsz adsorption (>60%). Adsorption of BSA on the GIC-PAPEO22/P2MVPI43 coating is moderately reduced, but on the GIC-PAPEO22/PAH∙HCl160 coating it is enhanced

    The Italian and Balkan peninsulas have been places traditionally highlighted as Pleistocene glacial refuges. The Iberian Peninsula, however, has been a focus of controversy between geobotanists and palaeobotanists as a result of its exclusion from this category on different occasions. In the current paper, we synthesise geological, molecular, palaeobotanical and geobotanical data that show the importance of the Iberian Peninsula in the Western Mediterranean as a refugium area. The presence of Aesculus aff. hippocastanum L. at the Iberian site at Cal Guardiola (Tarrasa, Barcelona, NE Spain) in the Lower– Middle Pleistocene transition helps to consolidate the remarkable role of the Iberian Peninsula in the survival of tertiary species during the Pleistocene. The palaeodistribution of the genus in Europe highlights a model of area abandonment for a widely-distributed species in the Miocene and Pliocene, leading to a diminished and fragmentary presence in the Pleistocene and Holocene on the southern Mediterranean peninsulas. Aesculus fossils are not uncommon within the series of Tertiary taxa. Many appear in the Pliocene and suffer a radical impoverishment in the Lower–Middle Pleistocene transition. Nonetheless some of these tertiary taxa persisted throughout the Pleistocene and Holocene up to the present in the Iberian Peninsula. Locating these refuge areas on the Peninsula is not an easy task, although areas characterised by a sustained level of humidity must have played an predominant role

    The blue supergiant MN18 and its bipolar circumstellar nebula

    We report the results of spectrophotometric observations of the massive star MN18 revealed via discovery of a bipolar nebula around it with the Spitzer Space Telescope. Using the optical spectrum obtained with the Southern African Large Telescope, we classify this star as B1 Ia. The evolved status of MN18 is supported by the detection of nitrogen overabundance in the nebula, which implies that it is composed of processed material ejected by the star. We analysed the spectrum of MN18 by using the code CMFGEN, obtaining a stellar effective temperature of ≈21 kK. The star is highly reddened, E(B − V) ≈ 2 mag. Adopting an absolute visual magnitude of MV = −6.8 ± 0.5 (typical of B1 supergiants), MN18 has a luminosity of log L/L⊙ ≈ 5.42 ± 0.30, a mass-loss rate of ≈(2.8-4.5) × 10− 7  M⊙ yr− 1, and resides at a distance of ≈5.6 +1.5−1.2 −1.2+1.5 kpc. We discuss the origin of the nebula around MN18 and compare it with similar nebulae produced by other blue supergiants in the Galaxy (Sher 25, HD 168625, [SBW2007] 1) and the Large Magellanic Cloud (Sk−69 deg 202). The nitrogen abundances in these nebulae imply that blue supergiants can produce them from the main-sequence stage up to the pre-supernova stage. We also present a K-band spectrum of the candidate luminous blue variable MN56 (encircled by a ring-like nebula) and report the discovery of an OB star at ≈17 arcsec from MN18. The possible membership of MN18 and the OB star of the star cluster Lynga 3 is discussed
