quotients of a hypersurface in the ambient toric variety defined by the
24-cell. Their fundamental groups are SL(2,3), a semidirect product of Z_3 and

Fluctuations of Quantum Radiation Pressure in Dissipative Fluid
Using the generalized Langevin equations involving the stress tensor
approach, we study the dynamics of a perfectly reflecting mirror which is
exposed to the electromagnetic radiation pressure by a laser beam in a fluid at
finite temperature. Based on the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, the minimum
uncertainty of the mirror's position measurement from both quantum and thermal
noises effects including the photon counting error in the laser interferometer
is obtained in the small time limit as compared with the "standard quantum
limit".
The result of the large time behavior of fluctuations of the mirror's
velocity in a dissipative environment can be applied to the laser

Adjoint bi-continuous semigroups and semigroups on the space of measures
For a given bi-continuous semigroup T on a Banach space X we define its
adjoint on an appropriate closed subspace X^o of the norm dual X'. Under some
abstract conditions this adjoint semigroup is again bi-continuous with respect
to the weak topology (X^o,X). An application is the following: For K a Polish
space we consider operator semigroups on the space C(K) of bounded, continuous
functions (endowed with the compact-open topology) and on the space M(K) of
bounded Baire measures (endowed with the weak*-topology). We show that
bi-continuous semigroups on M(K) are precisely those that are adjoints of a
bi-continuous semigroups on C(K). We also prove that the class of bi-continuous
semigroups on C(K) with respect to the compact-open topology coincides with the
class of equicontinuous semigroups with respect to the strict topology. In
general, if K is not Polish space this is not the case
Harnack Inequality and Strong Feller Property for Stochastic Fast-Diffusion Equations
This paper presents analogous results for stochastic fast-diffusion
equations. Since the fast-diffusion equation possesses weaker dissipativity
than the porous medium one does, some technical difficulties appear in the
study. As a compensation to the weaker dissipativity condition, a Sobolev-Nash
inequality is assumed for the underlying self-adjoint operator in applications.

A New Method for the Assessment of Age and Age-Spread of Pre-Main Sequence Stars in Young Stellar Associations of the Magellanic Clouds
We present a new method for the evaluation of the age and age-spread among
pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars in star-forming regions in the Magellanic Clouds,
accounting simultaneously for photometric errors, unresolved binarity,
differential extinction, stellar variability, accretion and crowding. The
application of the method is performed with the statistical construction of
synthetic color-magnitude diagrams using PMS evolutionary models. We convert
each isochrone into 2D probability distributions of artificial PMS stars in the
CMD by applying the aforementioned biases that dislocate these stars from their
original CMD positions. A maximum-likelihood technique is then applied to
derive the probability for each observed star to have a certain age, as well as
the best age for the entire cluster. We apply our method to the photometric
catalog of ~2000 PMS stars in the young association LH 95 in the LMC, based on
the deepest HST/ACS imaging ever performed toward this galaxy, with a detection
limit of V~28, corresponding to M~0.2 Msun. Our treatment shows that the age
determination is very sensitive to the considered grid of evolutionary models
and the assumed binary fraction. The age of LH 95 is found to vary from 2.8 Myr
to 4.4 Myr, depending on these factors. Our analysis allows us to disentangle a
real age-spread from the apparent CMD-broadening caused by the physical and
observational biases. We find that LH 95 hosts an age-spread well represented
by a gaussian distribution with a FWHM of the order of 2.8 Myr to 4.2 Myr
depending on the model and binary fraction. We detect a dependence of the
average age of the system with stellar mass. This dependence does not appear to
have any physical meaning, being rather due to imperfections of the PMS
evolutionary models, which tend to predict lower ages for the intermediate

The positive soundscape project : a synthesis of results from many disciplines
This paper takes an overall view of ongoing findings from the Positive Soundscape Project, a large inter-disciplinary soundscapes study which is nearing completion. Qualitative fieldwork (soundwalks and focus groups) and lab-based listening tests have revealed that two key dimensions of the emotional response are calmness and vibrancy. In the lab these factors explain nearly 80% of the variance in listener response. Physiological validation is being sought using fMRI measurements, and these have so far shown significant differences in the response of the brain to affective and neutral soundscapes. A conceptual framework which links the key soundscape components and which could be used for future design is outlined. Metrics are suggested for some perceptual scales and possibilities for soundscape synthesis for design and user engagement are discussed, as are the applications of the results to future research and environmental noise policy
Field-enhanced direct tunneling in ultrathin atomic-layer-deposition-grown Au-Al2O3-Cr metal-insulator-metal structures
Metal-insulator-metal structures based on ultrathin high-k dielectric films are underpinning a rapidly increasing number of devices and applications. Here, we report detailed electrical characterizations of asymmetric metal-insulator-metal devices featuring atomic layer deposited 2-nm-thick Al2O3 films. We find a high consistency in the current density as a function of applied electric field between devices with very different surface areas and significant asymmetries in the IV characteristics. We show by TEM that the thickness of the dielectric film and the quality of the metal-insulator interfaces are highly uniform and of high quality, respectively. In addition, we develop a model which accounts for the field enhancement due to the small sharp features on the electrode surface and show that this can very accurately describe the observed asymmetry in the current-voltage characteristic, which cannot be explained by the difference in work function alone
Quality of life with conservative care compared with assisted peritoneal dialysis and haemodialysis
Background. There is little information about quality of life (QoL) for patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) choosing conservative kidney management (CKM). The Frail and Elderly Patients on Dialysis (FEPOD) study demonstrated that frailty was associated with poorer QoL outcomes with little difference between dialysis modalities [assisted peritoneal dialysis (aPD) or haemodialysis (HD)]. We therefore extended the FEPOD study to include CKM patients with estimated glomerular filtration rate ⌉10 mL/min/1.73m2 (i.e. individuals with ESKD otherwise likely to be managed with dialysis). Methods. CKM patients were propensity matched to HD and aPD patients by age, gender, ethnicity, diabetes status and index of deprivation. QoL outcomes measured were Short Form-12 (SF12), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale depression score, symptom score, Illness Intrusiveness Rating Scale (IIRS) and Renal Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire. Frailty was assessed using the Clinical Frailty Scale. Generalized linear modelling was used to assess the impact of treatment modality on QoL outcomes, adjusting for baseline characteristics. Results. In total, 84 (28 CKM, 28 HD and 28 PD) patients were included. Median age for the cohort was 82 (79-88) years. Compared with CKM, aPD was associated with higher SF12 physical component score (PCS) [Exp B (95% confidence interval)=1.20 (1.00-1.45), P<0.05] and lower symptom score [Exp B=0.62 (0.43-0.90), P=0.01]; depression score was lower in HD compared with CKM [Exp B=0.70 (0.52-0.92), P=0.01]. Worsening frailty was associated with higher depression scores [Exp B=2.59 (1.45-4.62), P<0.01], IIRS [Exp B=1.20 (1.12-1.28), P<0.01] and lower SF12 PCS [Exp B=0.87 (0.83-0.93), P<0.01]. Conclusion. Treatment by dialysis, both with aPD and HD, improved some QoL measures. Overall, aPD was equal to or slightly better than the other modalities in this elderly population. However, as in the primary FEPOD study, frailty was associated with worse QoL measures irrespective of CKD modality. These findings highlight the need for an individualized approach to the management of ESKD in older people.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio
