Efecto del manejo y del temperamento animal sobre indicadores de calidad de la carne bovina
The aim of this research was to study the effect of different handling conditions on physiological stress indicators and meat quality of beef cattle by studying animals with different temperaments. Forty animals classified by their temperament (calm and disturbed) were used. They were fed on pastures and finished with a mixed diet of corn grain and pasture. Biochemical indicators of animal stress were measured at slaughter (packed cell volume -PCV-, proteins, glucose, creatinine, alkaline phosphatase -APactivity, cortisol, insulin, glycogen). Also, ultimate pH and instrumental colour were chosen as meat quality markers. Animal temperament showed a significantly increase (p<0.05) on PCV levels and a significantly (p<0.05) decrease on muscle glycogen. Besides, levels of plasma glucose and total proteins showed significant (p<0.05) differences associated to management applied. Meat quality markers (pH and colour) did not show significant differences according to handling conditions or temperament. Mean cortisol levels at the exsanguination time were significantly higher (p<0.05) than the values obtained one week prior to slaughter, which suggests an important effect of stress associated to slaughter procedures. It would be interesting to focus attention on the assessment of acute stress at abattoir, in order to improve handling protocols, and therefore to assure meat quality in Argentinean beef production systems.El objetivo del presente trabajo fue estudiar el efecto de diferentes condiciones de manejo sobre indicadores fisiológicos de estrés y de calidad de carne en bovinos con temperamentos contrastantes. Se utilizaron cuarenta animales clasificados como calmos y excitables. Los mismos fueron alimentados inicialmente a base de pasturas y terminados con una dieta mixta de grano de maÃz y pasturas. Se dosaron indicadores bioquÃmicos de estrés (hematocrito, proteÃnas plasmáticas, glucosa, creatinina, actividad fosfatasa alcalina, cortisol, insulina, contenido muscular de glucógeno). Como indicadores de calidad de carne se midieron el pH de 24 h y color instrumental. El temperamento animal demostró un incremento significativo (p<0,05) en los niveles de hematocrito y con una disminución significativa (p<0,05) del glucógeno muscular. Los niveles de glucemia y de proteÃnas totales mostraron modificaciones significativas (p<0,05) asociadas con el manejo. El incremento (p<0,05) en los niveles plasmáticos de cortisol durante la faena, independientemente del tratamiento o el temperamento animal, sugiere un importante efecto estresor por parte del proceso de faena. SerÃa interesante centrar la atención en el estudio del estrés agudo, a fin de mejorar protocolos de manejo animal, y consecuentemente, optimizar la calidad de la carne asociada en los sistemas de producción de Argentina.Fil: Pighin, D. The epochs of early-type galaxy formation as a function of environment
The aim of this paper is to set constraints of the epochs of early-type
galaxy formation through the 'archaeology' of the stellar populations in local
galaxies. Using our models of absorption line indices that account for variable
abundance ratios, we derive the stellar population parameters of 124 early-type
galaxies in high and low density environments. We find that all three
parameters age, metallicity, and alpha/Fe ratio are correlated with velocity
dispersion. We further find evidence for an influence of the environment on the
stellar population properties. Massive early-type galaxies in low-density
environments appear on average ~2 Gyrs younger and slightly more metal-rich
than their counterparts in high density environments. No offsets in the
alpha/Fe ratios, instead, are detected. We translate the derived ages and
alpha/Fe ratios into star formation histories. We show that most star formation
activity in early-type galaxies is expected to have happened between redshifts
3 and 5 in high density and between redshifts 1 and 2 in low density
environments. We conclude that at least 50 per cent of the total stellar mass
density must have already formed at z 1, in good agreement with observational
estimates of the total stellar mass density as a function of redshift. Our
results suggest that significant mass growth in the early-type galaxy
population below z 1 must be restricted to less massive objects, and a
significant increase of the stellar mass density between redshifts 1 and 2
should be present caused mainly by the field galaxy population. The results of
this paper further imply vigorous star formation episodes in massive objects at
z 2-5 and the presence of evolved ellipticals around z 1, both observationally

Paraoxonase 2 protein is spatially expressed in the human placenta and selectively reduced in labour
Humans parturition involves interaction of hormonal, neurological, mechanical stretch and inflammatory pathways and the placenta plays a crucial role. The paraoxonases (PONs 1–3) protect against oxidative damage and lipid peroxidation, modulation of endoplasmic reticulum stress and regulation of apoptosis. Nothing is known about the role of PON2 in the placenta and labour. Since PON2 plays a role in oxidative stress and inflammation, both features of labour, we hypothesised that placental PON2 expression would alter during labour. PON2 was examined in placentas obtained from women who delivered by cesarean section and were not in labour and compared to the equivalent zone of placentas obtained from women who delivered vaginally following an uncomplicated labour. Samples were obtained from 12 sites within each placenta: 4 equally spaced apart pieces were sampled from the inner, middle and outer placental regions. PON2 expression was investigated by Western blotting and real time PCR. Two PON2 forms, one at 62 kDa and one at 43 kDa were found in all samples. No difference in protein expression of either isoform was found between the three sites in either the labour or non-labour group. At the middle site there was a highly significant decrease in PON2 expression in the labour group when compared to the non-labour group for both the 62 kDa form (p = 0.02) and the 43 kDa form (p = 0.006). No spatial differences were found within placentas at the mRNA level in either labour or non-labour. There was, paradoxically, an increase in PON2 mRNA in the labour group at the middle site only. This is the first report to describe changes in PON2 in the placenta in labour. The physiological and pathological significance of these remains to be elucidated but since PON2 is anti-inflammatory further studies are warranted to understand its role
Diet suppresses glioblastoma initiation in mice by maintaining quiescence of mutation-bearing neural stem cells
Glioblastoma is thought to originate from neural stem cells (NSCs) of the subventricular zone that acquire genetic alterations. In the adult brain, NSCs are largely quiescent, suggesting that deregulation of quiescence maintenance may be a prerequisite for tumor initiation. Although inactivation of the tumor suppressor p53 is a frequent event in gliomagenesis, whether or how it affects quiescent NSCs (qNSCs) remains unclear. Here, we show that p53 maintains quiescence by inducing fatty-acid oxidation (FAO) and that acute p53 deletion in qNSCs results in their premature activation to a proliferative state. Mechanistically, this occurs through direct transcriptional induction of PPARGC1a, which in turn activates PPARα to upregulate FAO genes. Dietary supplementation with fish oil containing omega-3 fatty acids, natural PPARα ligands, fully restores quiescence of p53-deficient NSCs and delays tumor initiation in a glioblastoma mouse model. Thus, diet can silence glioblastoma driver mutations, with important implications for cancer prevention
Fitting Neutrino Physics with a U(1)_R Lepton Number
We study neutrino physics in the context of a supersymmetric model where a
continuous R-symmetry is identified with the total Lepton Number and one
sneutrino can thus play the role of the down type Higgs. We show that
R-breaking effects communicated to the visible sector by Anomaly Mediation can
reproduce neutrino masses and mixing solely via radiative contributions,
without requiring any additional degree of freedom. In particular, a relatively
large reactor angle (as recently observed by the Daya Bay collaboration) can be
accommodated in ample regions of the parameter space. On the contrary, if the
R-breaking is communicated to the visible sector by gravitational effects at
the Planck scale, additional particles are necessary to accommodate neutrino

Age-dependent maintenance of motor control and corticostriatal innervation by death receptor 3
Death receptor 3 is a proinflammatory member of the immunomodulatory tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily, which has been implicated in several inflammatory diseases such as arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease. Intriguingly however, constitutive DR3 expression has been detected in the brains of mice, rats, and humans, although its neurological function remains unknown. By mapping the normal brain expression pattern of DR3, we found that DR3 is expressed specifically by cells of the neuron lineage in a developmentally regulated and region-specific pattern. Behavioral studies on DR3-deficient (DR3(ko)) mice showed that constitutive neuronal DR3 expression was required for stable motor control function in the aging adult. DR3(ko) mice progressively developed behavioral defects characterized by altered gait, dyskinesia, and hyperactivity, which were associated with elevated dopamine and lower serotonin levels in the striatum. Importantly, retrograde tracing showed that absence of DR3 expression led to the loss of corticostriatal innervation without significant neuronal loss in aged DR3(ko) mice. These studies indicate that DR3 plays a key nonredundant role in the retention of normal motor control function during aging in mice and implicate DR3 in progressive neurological disease
The puzzlingly small CaII triplet absorption in elliptical galaxies
We measure the central values (within Re/8) of the CaII triplet line indices
CaT* and CaT and the Paschen index PaT at 8600 AA for a 93%-complete sample of
75 nearby early-type galaxies with BT<12 and Vgal<2490 km/s. We find that the
values of CaT* are constant to within 5% over the range of central velocity
dispersions 100<sigma<340 km/s, while the PaT (and CaT) values are mildly
anti-correlated with sigma. Using simple and composite stellar population
models, we show that: a) The measured CaT* and CaT are lower than expected from
simple stellar population models (SSPs) with Salpeter initial mass functions
(IMFs) and with metallicities and ages derived from optical Lick (Fe, Mg and
Hbeta) indices. Uncertainties in the calibration, the fitting functions and the
SSP modeling taken separately cannot explain the discrepancy. On the average,
the observed PaT values are within the range allowed by the models and the
large uncertainties in the fitting functions. b) The steepening of the IMF at
low masses required to lower the CaT* and CaT indices to the observed values is
incompatible with the measured FeH index at 9916 AA and the dynamical
mass-to-light ratios of ellipticals. c) Composite stellar populations with a
low-metallicity component reduce the disagreement, but rather artificial
metallicity distributions are needed. Another explanation may be that calcium
is indeed underabundant in ellipticals.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Theory of quantum radiation observed as sonoluminescence
Sonoluminescence is explained in terms of quantum radiation by moving
interfaces between media of different polarizability. In a stationary
dielectric the zero-point fluctuations of the electromagnetic field excite
virtual two-photon states which become real under perturbation due to motion of
the dielectric. The sonoluminescent bubble is modelled as an optically empty
cavity in a homogeneous dielectric. The problem of the photon emission by a
cavity of time-dependent radius is handled in a Hamiltonian formalism which is
dealt with perturbatively up to first order in the velocity of the bubble
surface over the speed of light. A parameter-dependence of the zero-order
Hamiltonian in addition to the first-order perturbation calls for a new
perturbative method combining standard perturbation theory with an adiabatic
approximation. In this way the transition amplitude from the vacuum into a
two-photon state is obtained, and expressions for the single-photon spectrum
and the total energy radiated during one flash are given both in full and in
the short-wavelengths approximation when the bubble is larger than the
wavelengths of the emitted light. It is shown analytically that the spectral
density has the same frequency-dependence as black-body radiation; this is
purely an effect of correlated quantum fluctuations at zero temperature. The
present theory clarifies a number of hitherto unsolved problems and suggests
explanations for several more. Possible experiments that discriminate this from
