HST/NICMOS Imaging of Disks and Envelopes Around Very Young Stars
We present HST/NICMOS observations with 0.1" (15 AU) resolution of six young
stellar objects in the Taurus star-formation region. The targets of our survey
are three Class I IRAS sources (IRAS 04016+2610, IRAS 04248+2612, and IRAS
04302+2247) and three low-luminosity stars (DG Tau B, Haro 6-5B, and CoKu
Tau/1) associated with Herbig Haro jets. The broad-band images show that the
near-infrared radiation from these sources is dominated by light scattered from
dusty circumstellar material distributed in a region 10 - 15 times the size of
our solar system. Although the detailed morphologies of the individual objects
are unique, the observed young stellar objects share common features. All of
the circumstellar reflection nebulae are crossed by dark lanes from 500 - 900
AU in extent and from less than 50 to 350 AU in apparent thickness. The
absorption lanes extend perpendicular to known optical and millimeter outflows
in these sources. We interpret the dark lanes as optically thick circumstellar
disks seen in silhouette against bright reflection nebulosity. The bipolar
reflection nebulae extending perpendicular to the dust lanes appear to be
produced by scattering from the upper and lower surfaces of the disks and from
dusty material within or on the walls of the outflow cavities. Out of five
objects in which the central source is directly detected, two are found to be
subarcsecond binaries. This mini-survey is the highest resolution near-infrared
study to date of circumstellar environments around solar-type stars with age <=

Semisimplicity of the quantum cohomology for smooth Fano toric varieties associated with facet symmetric polytopes
The degree zero part of the quantum cohomology algebra of a smooth Fano toric
symplectic manifold is determined by the superpotential function, W, of its
moment polytope. In particular, this algebra is semisimple, i.e. splits as a
product of fields, if and only if all the critical points of W are
non-degenerate. In this paper we prove that this non-degeneracy holds for all
smooth Fano toric varieties with facet-symmetric duals to moment polytopes.Comment: 16 pages; corrected version, published in Electron. Res. Announc.

Debris Disks of Members of the Blanco 1 Open Cluster
We have used the Spitzer Space Telescope to obtain Multiband Imaging
Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS) 24 um photometry for 37 members of the ~100 Myr
old open cluster Blanco 1. For the brightest 25 of these stars (where we have
3sigma uncertainties less than 15%), we find significant mid-IR excesses for
eight stars, corresponding to a debris disk detection frequency of about 32%.
The stars with excesses include two A stars, four F dwarfs and two G dwarfs.
The most significant linkage between 24 um excess and any other stellar
property for our Blanco 1 sample of stars is with binarity. Blanco 1 members
that are photometric binaries show few or no detected 24 um excesses whereas a
quarter of the apparently single Blanco 1 members do have excesses. We have
examined the MIPS data for two other clusters of similar age to Blanco 1 -- NGC
2547 and the Pleiades. The AFGK photometric binary star members of both of
these clusters also show a much lower frequency of 24 um excesses compared to
stars that lie near the single-star main sequence. We provide a new
determination of the relation between V-Ks color and Ks-[24] color for main
sequence photospheres based on Hyades members observed with MIPS. As a result
of our analysis of the Hyades data, we identify three low mass Hyades members
as candidates for having debris disks near the MIPS detection limit.Comment: Accepted to Ap

Tracking Single Cells in Live Animals Using a Photoconvertible Near-Infrared Cell Membrane Label
We describe a novel photoconversion technique to track individual cells in vivo using a commercial lipophilic membrane dye, DiR. We show that DiR exhibits a permanent fluorescence emission shift (photoconversion) after light exposure and does not reacquire the original color over time. Ratiometric imaging can be used to distinguish photoconverted from non-converted cells with high sensitivity. Combining the use of this photoconvertible dye with intravital microscopy, we tracked the division of individual hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells within the calvarium bone marrow of live mice. We also studied the peripheral differentiation of individual T cells by tracking the gain or loss of FoxP3-GFP expression, a marker of the immune suppressive function of CD4+ T cells. With the near-infrared photoconvertible membrane dye, the entire visible spectral range is available for simultaneous use with other fluorescent proteins to monitor gene expression or to trace cell lineage commitment in vivo with high spatial and temporal resolution
Cystic fibrosis population carrier screening: 2004 revision of American College of Medical Genetics mutation panel
Group recommended a panel of mutations and variants that should be tested to determine carrier status within the CFTR gene as a part of population screening programs.1,2 This was initially done in response to the recommendations of an NIH CF Consensus Conference that CF carrier screening be consid-ered by all couples for use before conception or prenatally.3 At that time, the Working Group recognized limitations in our understanding of the population frequencies of several CF al-leles and proposed to review mutation distribution data after the first two years of the program. In 2002, as part of an ongo-ing effort to ensure that the cystic fibrosis carrier screening programs are current with respect to the scientific literature and other available data and practices, we initiated a second review of data on the distribution of mutations in different ethnic groups and we began to assess whether providers wer
HST NIR Snapshot Survey of 3CR Radio Source Counterparts II: An Atlas and Inventory of the Host Galaxies, Mergers and Companions
We present the second part of an H-band (1.6 microns) atlas of z<0.3 3CR
radio galaxies, using the Hubble Space Telescope Near Infrared Camera and
Multi-Object Spectrometer (HST NICMOS2). We present new imaging for 21 recently
acquired sources, and host galaxy modeling for the full sample of 101
(including 11 archival) -- an 87% completion rate. Two different modeling
techniques are applied, following those adopted by the galaxy morphology and
the quasar host galaxy communities. Results are compared, and found to be in
excellent agreement, although the former breaks down in the case of strongly
nucleated sources. Companion sources are tabulated, and the presence of
mergers, tidal features, dust disks and jets are catalogued. The tables form a
catalogue for those interested in the structural and morphological dust-free
host galaxy properties of the 3CR sample, and for comparison with morphological
studies of quiescent galaxies and quasar host galaxies. Host galaxy masses are
estimated, and found to typically lie at around 2*10^11 solar masses. In
general, the population is found to be consistent with the local population of
quiescent elliptical galaxies, but with a longer tail to low Sersic index,
mainly consisting of low-redshift (z<0.1) and low-radio-power (FR I) sources. A
few unusually disky FR II host galaxies are picked out for further discussion.
Nearby external sources are identified in the majority of our images, many of
which we argue are likely to be companion galaxies or merger remnants. The

Formation and Evolution of Planetary Systems: Placing Our Solar System in Context with Spitzer
We summarize the progress to date of our Legacy Science Program entitled "The
Formation and Evolution of Planetary Systems" (FEPS) based on observations
obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope during its first year of operation.
In addition to results obtained from our ground-based preparatory program and
our early validation program, we describe new results from a survey for
near-infrared excess emission from the youngest stars in our sample as well as
a search for cold debris disks around sun-like stars. We discuss the
implications of our findings with respect to current understanding of the

Adenosine generation catalyzed by CD39 and CD73 expressed on regulatory T cells mediates immune suppression
The study of T regulatory cells (T reg cells) has been limited by the lack of specific surface markers and an inability to define mechanisms of suppression. We show that the expression of CD39/ENTPD1 in concert with CD73/ecto-5′-nucleotidase distinguishes CD4+/CD25+/Foxp3+ T reg cells from other T cells. These ectoenzymes generate pericellular adenosine from extracellular nucleotides. The coordinated expression of CD39/CD73 on T reg cells and the adenosine A2A receptor on activated T effector cells generates immunosuppressive loops, indicating roles in the inhibitory function of T reg cells. Consequently, T reg cells from Cd39-null mice show impaired suppressive properties in vitro and fail to block allograft rejection in vivo. We conclude that CD39 and CD73 are surface markers of T reg cells that impart a specific biochemical signature characterized by adenosine generation that has functional relevance for cellular immunoregulation
A combined low-radio frequency/X-ray study of galaxy groups I. Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope observations at 235 MHz and 610 MHz
We present new Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope observations at 235 MHz and
610 MHz of 18 X-ray bright galaxy groups. These observations are part of an
extended project, presented here and in future papers, which combines
low-frequency radio and X-ray data to investigate the interaction between
central active galactic nuclei (AGN) and the intra-group medium (IGM). The
radio images show a very diverse population of group-central radio sources,
varying widely in size, power, morphology and spectral index. Comparison of the
radio images with Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray images shows that groups with
significant substructure in the X-ray band and marginal radio emission at >= 1
GHz host low-frequency radio structures that correlate with substructures in
IGM. Radio-filled X-ray cavities, the most evident form of AGN/IGM interaction
in our sample, are found in half of the systems, and are typically associated
with small, low- or mid-power double radio sources. Two systems, NGC5044 and
NGC4636, possess multiple cavities, which are isotropically distributed around
the group center, possibly due to group weather. In other systems the
radio/X-ray correlations are less evident. However, the AGN/IGM interaction can
manifest itself through the effects of the high-pressure medium on the
morphology, spectral properties and evolution of the radio-emitting plasma. In
particular, the IGM can confine fading radio lobes in old/dying radio galaxies
and prevent them from dissipating quickly. Evidence for radio emission produced
by former outbursts that coexist with current activity is found in six groups
