X-ray Emission From Nearby M-dwarfs: the Super-saturation Phenomenon
A rotation rate and X-ray luminosity analysis is presented for rapidly
rotating single and binary M-dwarf systems. X-ray luminosities for the majority
of both single & binary M-dwarf systems with periods below days
(equatorial velocities, V 6 km~s) are consistent with the
current rotation-activity paradigm, and appear to saturate at about
of the stellar bolometric luminosity. The single M-dwarf data show tentative
evidence for the super-saturation phenomenon observed in some ultra-fast
rotating ( 100 km~s) G & K-dwarfs in the IC 2391, IC 2602 and Alpha
Persei clusters. The IC 2391 M star VXR60b is the least X-ray active and most
rapidly rotating of the short period (P 2 days) stars considered
herein, with a period of 0.212 days and an X-ray activity level about 1.5 sigma
below the mean X-ray emission level for most of the single M-dwarf sample. For
this star, and possibly one other, we cautiously believe that we have
identified the first evidence of super-saturation in M-dwarfs. If we are wrong,
we demonstrate that only M-dwarfs rotating close to their break up velocities
are likely to exhibit the super-saturation effect at X-ray wavelengths.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, accepted by MNRA
Low-mass members of the young cluster IC 4665 and pre-main-sequence lithium depletion
We have used fibre spectroscopy to establish cluster membership and examine
pre-main-sequence (PMS) lithium depletion for low-mass stars (spectral types F
to M) in the sparse young (~30 Myr) cluster IC 4665. We present a filtered
candidate list of 40 stars that should contain 75 per cent of single cluster
members with V of 11.5 to 18 in the central square degree of the cluster.
Whilst F- and G-type stars in IC 4665 have depleted little or no lithium, the
K- and early M-type stars have depleted more Li than expected when compared
with similar stars in other clusters of known age. An empirical age estimate
based on Li-depletion among the late-type stars of IC 4665 would suggest it is
older than 100 Myr. This disagrees entirely with ages determined either from
the nuclear turn-off, from isochronal matches to low-mass stars or from the
re-appearance of lithium previously found in much lower mass stars (the
``lithium depletion boundary''). We suggest that other parameters besides age,
perhaps composition or rotation, are very influential in determining the degree
of PMS Li-depletion in stars with M greater than 0.5 Msun. Further work is
required to identify and assess the effects of these additional parameters,
particularly to probe conditions at the interface between the sub-photospheric
convection zone and developing radiative core. Until then, PMS Li depletion in
F- to early M-type stars cannot be confidently used as a precise age indicator
in young clusters, kinematic groups or individual field stars.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA
Preventive measures in infancy to reduce under-five mortality: a case-control study in The Gambia.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between child mortality and common preventive interventions: vaccination, trained birthing attendants, tetanus toxoid during pregnancy, breastfeeding and vitamin A supplementation. METHODS: Case-control study in a population under demographic surveillance. Cases (n = 141) were children under five who died. Each was age and sex-matched to five controls (n = 705). Information was gathered by interviewing primary caregivers. RESULTS: All but one of the interventions - whether the mother had received tetanus toxoid during pregnancy - were protective against child mortality after multivariate analysis. Having a trained person assisting at child birth (OR 0.2 95% CI 0.1-0.4), receiving all vaccinations by 9 months of age (OR 0.1; 95% CI 0.01-0.3), being breastfed for more than 12 months (Children breastfed between 13 and 24 months OR 0.1 95% CI 0.03-0.3, more than 25 months OR 0.1 95% CI 0.01-0.5) and receiving vitamin A supplementation at or after 6 months of age (OR 0.05; 95% CI 0.01-0.2) were protective against child death. CONCLUSIONS: This study confirms the value of at least four available interventions in the prevention of under-five death in The Gambia. It is now important to identify those who are not receiving them and why, and to intervene to improve coverage across the population
Lithium in Blanco1: Implications for Stellar Mixing
We obtain lithium abundances for G and K stars in Blanco 1, an open cluster
with an age similar to, or slightly younger than, the Pleiades. We critically
examine previous spectroscopic abundance analyses of Blanco 1 and conclude that
while there were flaws in earlier work, it is likely that Blanco 1 is close in
overall metallicity to the older Hyades cluster and more metal-rich than the
Pleiades. However, we find Blanco 1 has Li abundances and rotation rates
similar to the Pleiades, contradicting predictions from standard stellar
evolution models, in which convective pre-main sequence (PMS) Li depletion
should increase rapidly with metallicity. If the high metallicity of Blanco 1
is subsequently confirmed, our observations imply (1) that a currently unknown
mechanism severely inhibits PMS Li depletion, (2) that additional non-standard
mixing modes, such as those driven by rotation and angular momentum loss, are
then responsible for main sequence Li depletion between the ages of Blanco 1
and the Hyades, and (3) that in clusters younger than the Hyades, metallicity
plays only a minor role in determining the amount of Li depletion among G and K
stars. These conclusions suggest that Li abundance remains a useful age
indicator among young (less than 700 Myr) stars even when metallicities are
unknown. If non-standard mixing is effective in Population I stars, the
primordial Li abundance could be significantly larger than present day

Field testing of different chemical combinations as odour baits for trapping wild mosquitoes in The Gambia.
Odour baited traps have potential use in population surveillance of insect vectors of disease, and in some cases for vector population reduction. Established attractants for human host-seeking mosquitoes include a combination of CO(2) with L-lactic acid and ammonia, on top of which additional candidate compounds are being tested. In this field study in rural Gambia, using Latin square experiments with thorough randomization and replication, we tested nine different leading candidate combinations of chemical odorants for attractiveness to wild mosquitoes including anthropophilic malaria vectors, using modified Mosquito Magnet-X (MM-X) counterflow traps outside experimental huts containing male human sleepers. Highest catches of female mosquitoes, particularly of An. gambiae s.l. and Mansonia species, were obtained by incorporation of tetradecanoic acid. As additional carboxylic acids did not increase the trap catches further, this 'reference blend' (tetradecanoic acid with L-lactic acid, ammonia and CO(2)) was used in subsequent experiments. MM-X traps with this blend caught similar numbers of An. gambiae s.l. and slightly more Mansonia and Culex mosquitoes than a standard CDC light trap, and these numbers were not significantly affected by the presence or absence of human sleepers in the huts. Experiments with CO(2) produced from overnight yeast cultures showed that this organic source was effective in enabling trap attractiveness for all mosquito species, although at a slightly lower efficiency than obtained with use of CO(2) gas cylinders. Although further studies are needed to discover additional chemicals that increase attractiveness, as well as to optimise trap design and CO(2) source for broader practical use, the odour-baited traps described here are safe and effective for sampling host-seeking mosquitoes outdoors and can be incorporated into studies of malaria vector ecology
Using simulation as a learning experience in clinical teams to learn about palliative and end-of-life care: A literature review.
Simulation has been shown to improve the preparedness of practitioners in acute care. In this review, the authors evaluate using simulation to prepare practitioners to deliver palliative care in multidisciplinary teams. The Joanna Briggs Institute approach was used and seventeen studies selected. The thematic analysis of the literature fitted well with Gabby, Le May, Connell, and Klein's ( 2014 ) pyramid approach to health improvement suggesting that simulation can be used in teams to learn technical, soft and learning skills of delivering palliative care. The analysis does not indicate how learning each of these skills interacts nor if simulations in teams should be repeated, or how often

The M-dwarf X-ray data also show that there is no evidence for any difference in the X-ray behaviour between the single and binary systems, because for the single stars, the mean log LxLbol=−3.21±0.04 (0.2≲Prot≲10.1 d), whereas for the binary stars, the mean log LxLbol=−3.19±0.10 (0.8≲Prot≲10.4 d). Furthermore, we show that extremely X-ray active M-dwarfs exhibit a blue excess of about 0.1 magnitudes in U-B compared with less active field M-dwarfs. Such an excess level is comparable to that observed for extremely chromospherically active M-dwarfs. Moreover, as is the case for M-dwarf Ca ii H and K activity levels, there is an exclusion zone of X-ray activity between the extremely active M-dwarfs and the less active one

Interfacial-Redox-Induced Tuning of Superconductivity in YBa2Cu3O7-δ.
Solid-state ionic approaches for modifying ion distributions in getter/oxide heterostructures offer exciting potentials to control material properties. Here, we report a simple, scalable approach allowing for manipulation of the superconducting transition in optimally doped YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) films via a chemically driven ionic migration mechanism. Using a thin Gd capping layer of up to 20 nm deposited onto 100 nm thick epitaxial YBCO films, oxygen is found to leach from deep within the YBCO. Progressive reduction of the superconducting transition is observed, with complete suppression possible for a sufficiently thick Gd layer. These effects arise from the combined impact of redox-driven electron doping and modification of the YBCO microstructure due to oxygen migration and depletion. This work demonstrates an effective step toward total ionic tuning of superconductivity in oxides, an interface-induced effect that goes well into the quasi-bulk regime, opening-up possibilities for electric field manipulation

Applied Optics. 1989;28(17):3556-3566.Spatially resolved temperatures in a variety of low pressure flames of hydrogen and hydrocarbons burning with oxygen and nitrous oxide are determined from OH, NH, CH, and CN laser-induced fluorescence rotational excitation spectra. Systematic errors arising from spectral bias, time delay, and temporal sampling gate of the fluorescence detector are considered. In addition, we evaluate the errors arising from the influences of the optical depth and the rotational level dependence of the fluorescence quantum yield for each radical. These systematic errors cannot be determined through goodness-of-fit criteria and they are much larger than the statistical precision of the measurement. The severity of these problems is different for each radical; careful attention to the experimental design details for each species is necessary to obtain accurate LIF temperature measurements
