    Red cell ABO incompatibility and production of tumour necrosis factor-alpha

    Tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF) is a major mediator of diverse pathophysiological events similar to those of haemolytic transfusion reactions (HTR), such as fever, intravascular coagulation and organ failure. However, the possible role of TNF in HTR has not been investigated. We have constructed an in vitro whole blood model of HTR to examine whether TNF may be produced in red cell ABO incompatibility. TNF was observed in plasma, in a dose dependent manner, when ABO incompatible red cells were added, but not with compatible (group O) cells. Plasma TNF levels were maximal at 2 h, and declined to control levels by 24 h. Haemolysis of incompatible red cells was accompanied by TNF production. Immune haemolysis induced TNF gene expression by buffy coat leucocytes, as determined by Northern blot analysis. Heat inactivation of plasma abolished TNF production, whereas prior treatment with interferongamma augmented the response. These results demonstrate that a major cytokine is produced in response to red cell incompatibility, and suggest that TNF may play a role in the pathogenesis of haemolytic transfusion reactions.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/75627/1/j.1365-2141.1991.tb04485.x.pd

    On the Deformation of Dendrites During Directional Solidification of a Nickel-Based Superalloy

    Abstract: Synchrotron X-ray imaging has been used to examine in situ the deformation of dendrites that takes place during the solidification of a nickel-based superalloy. By combining absorption and diffraction contrast imaging, deformation events could be classified by their localization and permanence. In particular, a deformation mechanism arising from thermal contraction in a temperature gradient was elucidated through digital image correlation. It was concluded that this mechanism may explain the small misorientations typically observed in single crystal castings

    Effect of partial soil wetting on transpiration, vegetative growth and root system of young orange trees

    The wetted area fraction is a factor critical to the success of drip irrigation. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of partial soil wetting on transpiration, vegetative growth and root system of young orange trees. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse where plants were grown in 0.5 m3boxes internally divided into compartments. The wetting of 12 % of soil area was tested on two types of soil cultivated with ‘Valencia’ orange trees grafted onto Rangpur lime and ‘Swingle’ citrumelo rootstocks. Transpiration was determined in 40 plants. Water extraction and root density were evaluated in the compartments. Transpiration is reduced by restriction in wetted soil area, and such reduction is influenced by the number of days after the beginning of partial irrigation, atmospheric evaporative demand and plant phenological stage. Mean transpiration of plants with partial irrigation was equivalent to 84 % of the mean transpiration of plants with 100 % of wetted soil area in the period studied. However, after 156 days of imposing partial irrigation there was no difference in transpiration between treatments. Plant acclimation was caused by an increase in root concentration in the irrigated area. After a period of acclimation, if the entire root system is wetted, soil water extraction becomes proportional to the percentage of wetted area after a short period of time. Despite the reduction in transpiration, there was no difference between treatments with 12 % and 100 % of wetted soil area in terms of vegetative growth

    Open data from the third observing run of LIGO, Virgo, KAGRA, and GEO

    The global network of gravitational-wave observatories now includes five detectors, namely LIGO Hanford, LIGO Livingston, Virgo, KAGRA, and GEO 600. These detectors collected data during their third observing run, O3, composed of three phases: O3a starting in 2019 April and lasting six months, O3b starting in 2019 November and lasting five months, and O3GK starting in 2020 April and lasting two weeks. In this paper we describe these data and various other science products that can be freely accessed through the Gravitational Wave Open Science Center at https://gwosc.org. The main data set, consisting of the gravitational-wave strain time series that contains the astrophysical signals, is released together with supporting data useful for their analysis and documentation, tutorials, as well as analysis software packages

    Conceptions of Work and Learning at Work: Impressions from Older Workers

    There is substantial literature on new work practices and the associated skills required of workers in the 'new capitalism' but very few consider workers’ perspectives on the advocacies. The study reported here involved 39 participants aged 40 plus who were interviewed to obtain data in relation to their conceptions of work and learning at work. This was conducted with consideration given to the changing work practices occurring around them. The participants were from a medical service and an engineering organization. The data were analyzed qualitatively and results indicated four and five hierarchical conceptions of work, and learning at work, respectively. It became apparent that a significantly large number of older workers conceived of work and learning at work in quantitative terms and as separate entities. The data were further analysed to ascertain how the conceptions mapped with the participants’ AQF levels. This analysis indicated some dissonance between AQF levels and conceptions. The findings of this study provide baseline data to understand older workers’ behaviours in light of the current changes in work practices
