Characterization of white-fleshed peach cultivars grown in the ‘Zona da Mata’ area of Minas Gerais State, Brazil
There are few information on the physical and chemical characteristics of peach fruit in subtropical climate regions and the majority of the studies were developed in the southern region of Brazil. In this study, physical and chemical characteristics of 12 white-fleshed peach cultivars (Cristal, Cristal Tacoari, Colibri, Delicioso Precoce, Jóia 1, Jóia 2, Jóia 4, Marli, Okinawa, Pérola de Itaquera, Premier and Tropical) were evaluated. The cultivars were planted in the experimental orchard of the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV), Viçosa – MG, Brazil. The experiment was conducted during the 2011 harvest season, in a completely randomized design with 12 treatments (cultivars), three replications and 10 fruits per plot. The cultivars Delicioso Precoce and Marli showed, in general, higher mass and fruit diameter. Fruits of cultivars Jóia 2 and Tropical presented higher firmness. Cultivar Tropical stood out with better balance between acidity and soluble solids and higher vitamin C and carotenoids contents. There are few information on the physical and chemical characteristics of peach fruit in subtropical climate regions and the majority of the studies were developed in the southern region of Brazil.
Active and intelligent packaging: security, legal aspects and global market / Embalagem ativa e inteligente: segurança, aspectos legais e mercado global
Active and intelligent packaging has been based on a interaction of the pack with food and / or the environment that surrounds it. Are on the market active packaging to reduce lipid oxidation rates, control breathing, moisture content and minimize microbial growth. Such packages contain absorbers and emitting carbon dioxide, odor absorbents, ethylene removers, aroma-emitting and antimicrobial compounds. Intelligent packagings include indicators of time and temperature, ripeness indicators and deterioration, biosensors and radio frequency identification. Due to deliberate interaction with food and / or their environment, migration of substances may pose a food safety concern, should their use be regulated in legislation. This article presents: definitions and history of active and intelligent packaging; the main types of materials developed for food contact; future trends of active and intelligent packaging with a special emphasis on safety, legal aspects and evaluation; and the global market of active and intelligent packaging.
Potential acidity by pH SMP method in Amazonas State, Brazil
The objective of this work was to determine a mathematic model that estimates the potential acidity with pH SMP measured in water and in solution of CaCl2 0.01 mol L-1. Two hundred and forty six soil samples from several localities were utilized. Despite presenting a lower correlation coefficient (r = 0.89*), the equation H+Al = 30.646 - 3.848pH SMP, obtained in H2O, was more efficient than in the CaCl2 solution (H+Al = 30.155 -3.834pH SMP, r = 0.91*), since this last one underestimates the values of the potential acidity

Dietary counseling on long-term weight loss in overweight hypertensive patients
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate long-term weight loss in overweight hypertensive patients receiving dietary counseling. METHODS: Longitudinal study included overweight hypertensive patients who had an initial individual consultation with a nutritionist between January 2002 and December 2005 and were followed for four years in a hypertension clinic. Patients who had at least four consultations during the follow-up period were included in the dietary counseling group. Those who scheduled their first consultation but missed that appointment or had fewer than four consultations during the follow-up period were allocated to the control group. Target Energy intake was calculated at 20-25 kcal/kg actual body weight/day. RESULTS: The study included 102 patients aged 55 + 1 years old (58 in the dietary counseling group). As compared with the control group, patients in the dietary counseling group showed a significantly greater reduction in body weight (-3.6 + 0.8 vs. 0.8 + 0.7 kg), which remained significant after controlling for age, gender, baseline body mass index, and the use of different antihypertensive and antidiabetic drugs. Weight loss between 5.0% and 9.9% was observed in a significantly higher percentage of patients in the dietary counseling group (28% vs. 11%). A weight loss of at least 10% was only observed in dietary counseling group patients, who had a significantly lower odds ratio for increasing the number and/or dosage of antihypertensive agents, even after controlling for age, gender, and baseline body mass index. CONCLUSIONS: Dietary counseling may be associated with long-term weight loss in overweight hypertensive patients
Effects of Fumarprotocetraric Acid, a Depsidone from the Lichen Cladonia verticillaris, on Tyrosinase Activity
Lichens are widely distributed around the world. Their phenolic compounds, consisting mainly of depsides and depsidones, have been extensively studied for important biological activities. More recently, these compounds have been evaluated for their inhibitory activity against enzymes such as tyrosinase, a key agent in melanin biosynthesis. In the present investigation, the depsidone fumarprotocetraric acid isolated from the lichen Cladonia verticillaris (Raddi) Fr. was evaluated for its inhibitory activity against this critical enzyme. Kinetic study showed that depsidone at 0.6 mM inhibited tyrosinase activity by 39.8%. Lineweaver–Burk plots revealed that fumarprotocetraric acid can act as an uncompetitive or mixed-type inhibitor, depending on concentration.
