Identidades e performatividade de gênero nas práticas discursivas da Brahma Kumaris.

The present paper undertakes a theoretical and critical analysis of the question of gender within Brahma Kumaris discursive practices and makes its critique in line, basically, with the thought of Judith Butler. The interdisciplinary fi eld of gender studies argues that gender is the very condition of possibility for subjectivity, thus being invested with social and political connotations. However, the traditions, both secular and religious, tend either to obliterate or to naturalize gender. By adopting the theoretical and methodological framework of Social and Cultural Pragmatics (Rajagopalan, 2000; Pinto, 2002), this paper attempts to critique the elision of gender within Brahma Kumaris discourse, and, in doing so, tries to address the question of performativity that is implied in recent critical approaches of the social and human sciences when focusing the question of gender

SIGNOS INJURIOSOS: SABA MAHMOOD, OS CARTUNS DINAMARQUESES E O DEBATE SOBRE IDEOLOGIAS LINGUÍSTICAS

Este artigo retoma o argumento de Saba Mahmood em seu emblemático texto, “Razão religiosa e afeto secular: uma barreira incomensurável?”, publicado em português em ‘Debates do NER’. O objetivo de meu texto é aprofundar a discussão sobre ideologias linguísticas proposta por Mahmood no contexto da onda de violência que aconteceu depois da publicação, em 2005, de uma série de charges injuriosas sobre Muhmmad e muçulmanos devotos. Crenças sobre a linguagem arraigadas na tradição do cristianismo protestante – que dão suporte ao que chamo de ideologia semiótica secular – desempenharam um papel central na desconsideração dos efeitos performativos das imagens e no apagamento da dor moral sentida por muitos muçulmanos. Aprofundo no artigo as raízes calvinistas dessa ideologia semiótica secular, sistematizada por Ferdinand Saussure e o contexto calvinista em que ele viveu. Contrastando a visão de Saussure com a de seu contemporâneo Peirce, aponto para o apagamento da dimensão corpórea e reflexiva do uso da linguagem, e para a necessidade de crítica desse aspecto, que faz parte da dimensão pouco problematizada do universo secular em que críticas à religião tendem a ganhar corpo

The present paper brings about a possible articulation between translation and body from a non-sublimated, pragmatic perspective on meaning, as suggested by Wittgenstein in his Philosophical Investigations. By considering theoretical elaborations within embodied realism and elsewhere on the role of the body in cognitive processes, together with a critique of the concept of translation somatics, as proposed by Douglas Robinson (1991), the paper highlights the situated and social character of the translator's body.O presente artigo articula uma relação possível entre tradução e corpo a partir de uma perspectiva pragmática e não-sublimada da significação, tal como sugerida por Wittgenstein em suas Investigações Filosóficas. Brahma Kumaris: the performative construction of gender identites

Parto do princípio de que os conceitos centrais sobre os quais o presente trabalho se debruça, isto é, 'gênero' e 'identidade', ao invés de constativos, são performativos. Sua existência não se dá anteriormente à linguagem; ao contrário, eles precisam ser performativamente reivindicados, iteravelmente, isto é, para o outro e novamente, na história de sua própria exibição Procedo, nesse sentido, a uma certa leitura da teoria dos atos de fala, desenvolvida inicialmente por John Langshaw Austin. A visão radical do performativo, segundo a qual a linguagem é, eminentemente, performativa é aqui informada pelo trabalho de leitura e intervenção no pensamento de Austin empreendido por Kanavillil Rajagopalan, Jacques Derrida, Judith Butler e Shoshana Felman. Abordo os dados segundo uma metodologia qualitativa, que vê na performatividade da linguagem indícios para o próprio tratamento do dado. As análises revelam que a reivindicação das identidades de gênero brahmins, calcada na visão de que somos almas e não corpos, constrói, performativamente, gêneros descorporificados (como é o caso da alma, do ser de paz, do anjo), criando, simultaneamente, alteridades abjetas (as pessoas luxuriosas, por exemplo), contra as quais as identidade brahmins reivindicam sua autonomia. A reivindicação de tais identidades tem de conviver, não obstante, com a contradição, advinda, principalmente, do peso da promessa de um gênero (puro) precisa lidar com sua condição humana, demasiado humana vinculada ao corpo e ao inconsciente, ao ato (ao mesmo tempo) de fala e falhoAbstract: This dissertation investigates the construction of gender identities in discursive practices within the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University. It is assumed here that the core concepts of this work, i.e., 'gender' and 'identity', far beyond constative, are performative. They neither exist before neither beyond language; rather, they must be performatively claimed, iterably, i.e., to the other and again, in the history of their own exhibition. I depart, then, from a particular reading of speech acts theory, developed initially by John Langshaw Austin. The radical view of the performative, according to which language is, eminently, performative, is based on the reading and intervention in Austin's thought by Kanavillil Rajagopalan, Jacques Derrida, Judith Butler and Shoshana Felman. The collected data are analyzed from a qualitative perspective, which consider that the performativity of language is a parameter itself to the treatment of texts. The analyses display that the claim for brahmin gender identities, based on the idea that we are souls rather than bodies, performs disembodied genders (e.g., the soul, the being of light, the angel), producing, simultaneously, abject alterities (the lustful persons, for example), against which brahmin identities constitute their autonomy. A questão da identidade em perspectiva pragmática

The present paper aims at discussing the question of identity from a pragmatic perspective. Needless to say, adopting a pragmatic perspective entails adopting an interdisciplinary approach, once pragmatics is a hybrid field, first appearing within Philosophy, then disseminating into Linguistics and into the major realm of language studies. The paper deals, therefore, with a certain delineation of a performative view of identity, such theoretical construct that occupies a central place within the agenda of both human sciences and the contemporary social life.Este trabalho apresenta uma reflexão sobre a questão da identidade a partir de uma perspectiva da pragmática lingüística. Apresentar uma perspectiva pragmática é, de partida, uma empreitada interdisciplinar, uma vez que este é um campo híbrido que surge na filosofia e, por assim dizer, dissemina-se na lingüística e na seara maior dos estudos da linguagem. Trata-se, então, de delinear uma visão performativa da identidade, esse construto teórico que tem ocupado um lugar central na agenda das ciências humanas e da vida social contemporânea.133

Physical-mechanical characterization of Amazonian woods by non-destructive methodology for the manufacture of EGP (Edge Glued Panel) panels

Studies of the technological properties of little-known native species are essential for an indication of sustainable management of the Amazon. The study aimed to evaluate the physical-mechanical performance of five Amazonian species obtained from an area managed in the Amazon by a non-destructive methodology, and to indicate their use to manufacture EGP panels. The samples were obtained from non-flooded secondary forest in the Amazon/Brazil (EEST/INPA). Fifteen trees were selected to determine the physical-mechanical properties, using the microwave system to determine the moisture, the apparent density test and the dynamic modulus of elasticity (MOEd). The microwave system presents better drying performance when compared to the conventional method (artificial drying), considering that the dry woods in this system present greater stability in the equilibrium moisture, and the woods from Murici, Breu vermelho and Angelim pedra presented content close to 12%, ideal moisture for EGP manufactures. The apparent density of the woods varied from 0.76 to 1.18 g.cm-3, classified as high density, following the standards of tropical woods. The studied woods presented MOEd of 11,175 to 14,109 MPa, thus demonstrating good resistance, and lower risk of deformation for the different uses, including for EGP panels, whether structural or not, being necessary to consider the type of adhesive. The quality of the studied woods presents a promising result for industrial indication, since they are mostly unknown or non-commercial woods, where technological characterization is a key tool to assist in decision making in the forest management plans that may indicate the use of new species in the forestry sector

Analysis of satisfaction of river transport users with the Manaus moderna port service level

As organizações têm como desafio suprir as necessidades de clientes, que exigem níveis de serviços cada vez mais elevados, sem comprometer a viabilidade econômico-financeira do empreendimento. Níveis de serviços elevados demandam custos elevados, regra que também se aplica ao transporte fluvial de passageiros praticado na Amazônia. Este estudo teve como objetivo analisar a satisfação dos usuários das embarcações amazônicas com o nível de serviço que lhes é oferecido. Utilizou a metodologia de levantamento, cujos dados foram coletados de 408 usuários dos serviços de transporte fornecido pelas embarcações que aportam no porto conhecido por “Manaus Moderna”, através de questionários com questões fechadas, analisados com estatísticas descritivas e testes de Kruskal-Wallis e U de Mann-Whitney, para detectar associações das categorias analíticas com aspectos sociodemográficos. Os resultados mostraram que os usuários estão muito satisfeitos com o nível de serviço oferecido, não houve associação entre satisfação e estado civil, gênero e faixa etária e houve diferenças em 14 categorias de satisfação em relação à renda pessoal dos usuários. A conclusão é que a altíssima satisfação dos usuários com o nível de serviço pode ser modificada, caso se lhes altere a renda pessoal, o que revela a fragilidade econômica, financeira e operacional desse meio de transporte que predomina na Amazônia.Organizations are challenged to meet the needs of customers, who demand ever-higher levels of service without compromising the economic and financial viability of the enterprise. High levels of service demand high costs, a rule that also applies to the fluvial passenger transport practiced in the Amazon. This study aimed to analyze the satisfaction of users of Amazonian vessels with the level of service offered to them. It used the survey method, whose data were collected from 408 users of transport services provided by vessels that dock in the port know as Manaus Moderna, through questionnaires with closed questions, analyzed with descriptive statistics and Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-U tests. Whitney, to detect associations of analytical categories with sociodemographic aspects. The results showed that users are very satisfied with the level of service offered, there was no association between satisfaction and marital status, gender and age group and there were differences in 14 satisfaction categories in relation to users’ personal income. The conclusion is that the high satisfaction of users with the level of service can be modified if they change their personal income, which reveals the economic, financial and operational fragility of this predominant mode of transport in the Amazon

Dois dias depois, Marielle Franco foi assassinada no Rio de Janeiro. Enquanto os pareceristas liam os manuscritos submetidos, apareciam denúncias de ataques químicos à população síria. Simultaneamente ao nosso trabalho de fechamento deste volume, os jornais estampavam fotos de crianças encarceradas em centros de detenção no Texas, depois da separação forçada de famílias imigrantes pela política de “tolerância zero” do governo Trump

A economia urbana e os artistas de rua: performance, mobilidades e conflitos em um espaço público turistificado

This article reflects on the complex relationship between street artists, their performances and urban space. For this reflection, we draw upon a study conducted in the Baixa, located in the historic centre of the city of Lisbon, Portugal. Methodologically, the study involved shadowed observation, including walks and videography, which took place between 2016 and 2021, as well as a set of 15 interviews with street artists which were conducted in 2018. Conceptually, the study draws upon the growing body of works within the scope of sensory geography and ethnomusicology, namely regarding street artists and their performances, and their intersection with economic issues, aspects of urbanity, the influence of tourism and sensory experiences. Our results reveal the process of territorialization of performance sites in Lisbon’s Baixa, the impact of artistic performances in the public space, and the relationship of street artists with the formal agents of the urban economy. We conclude the article with a brief reflection on the significance of tourism for the expansion of busking.Este artigo pretende refletir sobre a complexa relação entre os artistas de rua, as suas performances e o espaço urbano. Para esta reflexão, baseamo-nos num estudo desenvolvido na Baixa lisboeta, localizada no centro histórico da cidade de Lisboa, Portugal. Metodologicamente, o estudo implicou observação sombreada com recurso a caminhadas e à videografia entre 2016 e 2021, bem como um conjunto de 15 entrevistas realizadas a artistas de rua em 2018. Conceptualmente, o estudo recorre ao crescente corpo de bibliografia no âmbito da geografia sensorial e da etnomusicologia, nomeadamente em relação aos artistas de rua e às suas performances, e a sua intersecção com questões económicas, os aspetos da urbanidade, a influência do turismo e as experiências sensoriais. Os nossos resultados desvendam o processo de territorialização dos locais de performance na Baixa lisboeta, o impacto das performances artísticas no espaço público, e a relação dos artistas de rua com os agentes formais da economia urbana.
