“The RESPECT (Research in Palliative and End-of-Life Communication and Training) Center”
poster abstractCommunication is crucial to decision-making and high-quality care for patients with serious illness, but there are significant gaps in communication among patients, families, and clinicians. The Research in Palliative and End-of-Life Communication and Training (RESPECT) Center was funded in July 2010 under the IUPUI Signature Center Initiative to advance the science of palliative and end-of-life communication. The mission of the RESPECT Center is to build a collaborative, interdisciplinary scientific community of researchers and clinicians to work together to advance the science of communication in palliative and end-of-life care across the lifespan. The Center capitalizes on the complementary and expanding expertise at IU to support the advancement of research on communication in populations with serious illness that is lifethreatening, debilitating, or terminal.
The Center is working to achieve its mission through three primary activities. First, the Center convenes researchers with shared expertise to utilize the collective wisdom of the
interdisciplinary group in grant development and submission. The RESPECT Center uses a peer review meeting model to provide a forum for students, trainees, and faculty to develop and refine their grant writing activities focused on palliative and end-of-life care from idea development to grant revision. Second, research development is augmented by funding opportunities for peerreviewed pilot studies. Pilot funding is designed to attract new researchers to this area of study and to facilitate the generation of pilot data for more experienced researchers who are carving a new path in the field. Finally, several outreach activities are being undertaken with the goal of fostering new partnerships for translational science. The RESPECT Visiting Scholar series brings in external experts to present as part of a conference series and to meet with research faculty, clinicians, and administration to discuss issues related to advancing palliative and endof-life care research at IU. Additionally, a city-wide conference will be convened in year 3 to bring together members of the health care professional community with an interest in evidencebased practice in palliative and end-of-life care. The long-term goal of the RESPECT Center is to secure funding to permit the continued operation and expansion of Center activities
Towards the selection of a final set of trials for the 2012 ENP gray whale implementation review
At the March 2012 Intersessional meeting of the AWMP Working Group in La Jolla,CA, a set of trials was agreed upon for consideration as part of the Eastern Pacific Gray Whale Implementation Review. Since then, progress has been made on conditioning that set of trials. An assessment of the preliminary conditioning results is presented here, with a focus on five trials that were not able to mimic the available data as well as the remaining trials. If any of these five trials is to be dropped from further consideration, there must be unanimous agreement within the Working Group for such
Design of \u27Iris\u27, a Small Autonomous Surveillance UAV
This paper documents the design process used for a small autonomous surveillance UAV. The most significant requirements for the plane were size (man-packable), endurance (about 1 hour) and cost (essentially disposable). The plane that resulted, named Iris , is a tailless plane with a 45 cm wing span and a total mass of less than 200g. During flight tests, it achieved an endurance of 52 minutes. Distribución estival y abundancia de la gran manta raya (Mobula mobular) en el mar Adriático: datos de base para un marco de gestión iterativo
The giant devil ray (Mobula mobular) is a poorly understood protected endemic species of the eastern Atlantic-Mediterranean region. However, to date there are no range-wide management actions in place. This paper provides the first overview of the summer distribution and abundance of this species and other Myliobatiformes within the Adriatic Sea based on an aerial survey. Although the survey´s primary targets were cetaceans and sea turtles, the study showed that it was possible to use the survey to monitor other species. Abundance estimates are derived using conventional distance sampling analysis. Giant devil rays were observed mainly in the central-southern Adriatic (88% of total sightings). A total of 1595 giant devil rays were estimated in the central-southern Adriatic Sea [coefficient of variation(CV)=25%, uncorrected estimate for perception and availability bias]. When corrected for availability bias the number of specimens was estimated at 3255 (CV=56%). Population growth rate was estimated using life history traits and a sensitivity analysis was conducted to evaluate the benefit of improving biological knowledge on this data-poor species. A power analysis showed that a long-term commitment to an aerial survey would be necessary to monitor population trends. Conservation implications and future work, including how the study could be used to conduct an ecological risk assessment are discussed.La manta raya gigante (Mobula mobular) es una especie endémica protegida poco conocida de la región del Atlántico oriental-Mediterráneo. Sin embargo hasta la fecha no hay acciones de gestión que cubran todo su rango. Este artículo proporciona la primera visión de conjunto de la distribución y abundancia estival de esta especie y otras Myliobatiformes en el mar Adriático basada en un censo aéreo. Aunque los objetivos principales del censo eran cetáceos y tortugas marinas, el estudio mostró que era posible usar el censo para monitorizar otras especies. Las estimas de abundancia se derivaron utilizando análisis convencional de muestreo de distancias. Las manta rayas gigantes se observaron principalmente en el Adriático central y sur (88% de los avistamientos totales). Se estimaron un total de 1595 mantas rayas gigantes en el mar Adriático central-sur (CV=25%, estima no corregida para los sesgos de percepción y de disponibilidad). A short review of the distribution of short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) in the central and eastern North Atlantic with an abundance estimate for part of this area
This paper uses data from 3 programmes: (1) the North Atlantic Sightings Surveys (NASS) surveys undertaken throughout much of the central and eastern North Atlantic north of about 40° N in 1987, 1989, 1995 and 2001; (2) the MICA-93 programme; and (3) the north eastern Atlantic segment of the Small Cetacean Abundance in the North Sea (SCANS) survey in 1994. The data from all surveys were used to examine the distribution of common dolphins in the NE Atlantic. No sightings were made north of 57° N. An initial attempt to examine distribution against 4 potential non biological explanatory variables was made. A simple interpretation of the preliminary analyses presented here is that the primary areas for groups of common dolphins were in waters over 15° C and depths of 400-1,000 m (there does appear a link with shelf features), between around 49°-55° N especially between 20°-30°W. An illustrative example of spatial modelling is presented. Only for 1 year (and part of the total survey area) were there sufficient data to attempt to estimate abundance: 1995. The estimated abundance in the W Block of the NASS-95 Faroese survey was 273,159 (cv=0.26; 95% CI=153,392-435,104) short-beaked common dolphins. This estimate is corrected for animals missed on the trackline (g(0)) and for responsive movement.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Estimating cetacean density and abundance in the Central and Western Mediterranean Sea through aerial surveys : implications for management
The equipment for data collection was that used during the EU LIFE Nature programme, project LIFE04NAT/GB/000245 project ‘‘Small Cetaceans in the European Atlantic and North Sea (SCANS-II)’’, funded in 2006.Systematic, effective monitoring of animal population parameters underpins successful conservation strategy and wildlife management, but it is often neglected in many regions, including much of the Mediterranean Sea. Nonetheless, a series of systematic multispecies aerial surveys was carried out in the seas around Italy to gather important baseline information on cetacean occurrence, distribution and abundance. The monitored areas included the Pelagos Sanctuary, the Tyrrhenian Sea, portions of the Seas of Corsica and Sardinia, the Ionian Seas as well as the Gulf of Taranto. Overall, approximately 48,000 km were flown in either spring, summer and winter between 2009–2014, covering an area of 444,621 km2. The most commonly observed species were the striped dolphin and the fin whale, with 975 and 83 recorded sightings, respectively. Other sighted cetacean species were the common bottlenose dolphin, the Risso's dolphin, the sperm whale, the pilot whale and the Cuvier's beaked whale. Uncorrected model- and design-based estimates of density and abundance for striped dolphins and fin whales were produced, resulting in a best estimate (model-based) of around 95,000 striped dolphins (CV=11.6%; 95% CI=92,900–120,300) occurring in the Pelagos Sanctuary, Central Tyrrhenian and Western Seas of Corsica and Sardinia combined area in summer 2010. Estimates were also obtained for each individual study region and year. An initial attempt to estimate perception bias for striped dolphins is also provided. The preferred summer 2010 uncorrected best estimate (design-based) for the same areas for fin whales was around 665 (CV=33.1%; 95% CI=350–1,260). Estimates are also provided for the individual study regions and years. The results represent baseline data to develop efficient, long-term, systematic monitoring programmes, essential to evaluate trends, as required by a number of national and international frameworks, and stress the need to ensure that surveys are undertaken regularly and at a sufficient spatial scale. The management implications of the results are discussed also in light of a possible decline of fin whales abundance over the period from the mid-1990s to the present. Further work to understand changes in distribution and to allow for improved spatial models is emphasized.PostprintPeer reviewe
SMILE: a joint ESA/CAS mission to investigate the interaction between the solar wind and Earth's magnetosphere
The Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer (SMILE) is a collaborative science mission between ESA and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). SMILE is a novel self-standing mission to observe the coupling of the solar wind and Earth's magnetosphere via X-Ray imaging of the solar wind -- magnetosphere interaction zones, UV imaging of global auroral distributions and simultaneous in-situ solar wind, magnetosheath plasma and magnetic field measurements. The SMILE mission proposal was submitted by a consortium of European, Chinese and Canadian scientists following a joint call for mission by ESA and CAS. It was formally selected by ESA's Science Programme Committee (SPC) as an element of the ESA Science Program in November 2015, with the goal of a launch at the end of 2021.
In order to achieve its scientific objectives, the SMILE payload will comprise four instruments: the Soft X-ray Imager (SXI), which will spectrally map the Earth's magnetopause, magnetosheath and magnetospheric cusps; the UltraViolet Imager (UVI), dedicated to imaging the auroral regions; the Light Ion Analyser (LIA) and the MAGnetometer (MAG), which will establish the solar wind properties simultaneously with the imaging instruments. We report on the status of the mission and payload developments and the findings of a design study carried out in parallel at the concurrent design facilities (CDF) of ESA and CAS in October/November 2015

Monitoring Winter and Summer Abundance of Cetaceans in the Pelagos Sanctuary (Northwestern Mediterranean Sea) Through Aerial Surveys
Systematic long-term monitoring of abundance is essential to inform conservation measures and evaluate their effectiveness. To instigate such work in the Pelagos Sanctuary in the Mediterranean, two aerial surveys were conducted in winter and summer 2009. A total of 467 (131 in winter, 336 in summer) sightings of 7 species was made. Sample sizes were sufficient to estimate abundance of fin whales in summer (148; 95% CI = 87–254) and striped dolphins in winter (19,462; 95% CI = 12 939–29 273) and in summer (38 488; 95% CI = 27 447–53 968). Numbers of animals within the Sanctuary are significantly higher in summer, when human activities and thus potential population level impacts are highest. Comparisons with data from past shipboard surveys suggest an appreciable decrease in fin whales within the Sanctuary area and an appreciable increase in striped dolphins. Aerial surveys proved to be more efficient than ship surveys, allowing more robust estimates, with smaller CIs and CVs. These results provide essential baseline data for this marine protected area and continued regular surveys will allow the effectiveness of the MPA in terms of cetacean conservation to be evaluated and inform future management measures. The collected data may also be crucial in assessing whether ship strikes, one of the main causes of death for fin whales in the Mediterranean, are affecting the Mediterranean population
Lenalidomide in combination with dexamethasone at first relapse in comparison with its use as later salvage therapy in relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma
This subset analysis of data from two phase III studies in patients with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma (MM) evaluated the benefit of initiating lenalidomide plus dexamethasone at first relapse. Multivariate analysis showed that fewer prior therapies, along with β2-microglobulin (≤2.5 mg/L), predicted a better time to progression (TTP; study end-point) with lenalidomide plus dexamethasone treatment. Patients with one prior therapy showed a significant improvement in benefit after first relapse compared with those who received two or more therapies. Patients with one prior therapy had significantly prolonged median TTP (17.1 vs. 10.6 months; P=0.026) and progression-free survival (14.1 vs. 9.5 months, P=0.047) compared with patients treated in later lines. Overall response rates were higher (66.9% vs. 56.8%, P=0.06), and the complete response plus very good partial response rate was significantly higher in first relapse (39.8% vs. 27.7%, P=0.025). Importantly, overall survival was significantly prolonged for patients treated with lenalidomide plus dexamethasone with one prior therapy, compared with patients treated later in salvage (median of 42.0 vs. 35.8 months, P=0.041), with no differences in toxicity, dose reductions, or discontinuations despite longer treatment. Therefore, lenalidomide plus dexamethasone is both effective and tolerable for second-line MM therapy and the data suggest that the greatest benefit occurs with earlier use
