    Full-field strain measurements in textile deformability studies

    Full-field strain measurements are applied in studies of textile deformability during composite processing: (1) in testing of shear and tensile deformations of textiles (picture frame, bias and biaxial extension test) as an "optical extensometer", allowing accurate assessment of the sample deformation, which may differ significantly from the deformation applied by the testing device; (2) to study mechanisms of the textile deformation on the scale of the textile unit cell and of the individual yarns (meso- and micro-scale full-field strain measurements); (3) to measure the 3D-deformed shape and the distribution of local deformations (e.g., shear angles) of a textile reinforcement after draping, providing input data for the validation of material drape models and for the prediction of the consolidated part performance via structural finite element analysis. This paper discusses these three applications of the full-field strain measurements, providing examples of studies of deformability of woven (glass, glass/PP) and non-crimp (carbon) textile reinforcements. The authors conclude that optical full-field strain techniques are the preferable (sometimes the only) way of assuring correct deformation measurements during tensile or shear tests of textile

    Autocratic Breakdown and Regime Transitions: A New Data Set

    When the leader of an autocratic regime loses power, one of three things happens. The incumbent leadership group is replaced by democratically elected leaders. Someone from the incumbent leadership group replaces him, and the regime persists. Or the incumbent leadership group loses control to a different group that replaces it with a new autocracy. Much scholarship exists on the first kind of transition, but little on transitions from one autocracy to another, though they make up about half of all regime changes. We introduce a new data set that facilitates the investigation of all three kinds of transition. It provides transition information for the 280 autocratic regimes in existence from 1946 to 2010. The data identify how regimes exit power, how much violence occurs during transitions, and whether the regimes that precede and succeed them are autocratic. We explain the data set and show how it differs from currently available data. The new data identify autocratic regime breakdowns regardless of whether the country democratizes, which makes possible the investigation of why the ouster of dictators sometimes leads to democracy but often does not, and many other questions. We present a number of examples to highlight how the new data can be used to explore questions about why dictators start wars and why autocratic breakdown sometimes results in the establishment of a new autocratic regime rather than democratization.     Osteoporosis in young adults: pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management

    Postmenopausal osteoporosis is mainly caused by increased bone remodeling resulting from estrogen deficiency. Indications for treatment are based on low areal bone mineral density (aBMD, T-score ≤ −2.5), typical fragility fractures (spine or hip), and more recently, an elevated 10-year fracture probability (by FRAX®). In contrast, there is no clear definition of osteoporosis nor intervention thresholds in younger individuals. Low aBMD in a young adult may reflect a physiologically low peak bone mass, such as in lean but otherwise healthy persons, whereas fractures commonly occur with high-impact trauma, i.e., without bone fragility. Furthermore, low aBMD associated with vitamin D deficiency may be highly prevalent in some regions of the world. Nevertheless, true osteoporosis in the young can occur, which we define as a T-score below −2.5 at spine or hip in association with a chronic disease known to affect bone metabolism. In the absence of secondary causes, the presence of fragility fractures, such as in vertebrae, may point towards genetic or idiopathic osteoporosis. In turn, treatment of the underlying condition may improve bone mass as well. In rare cases, a bone-specific treatment may be indicated, although evidence is scarce for a true benefit on fracture risk.     Lewis versus Brønsted Acid Activation of a Mn(IV) Catalyst for Alkene Oxidation

    Lewis acid (LA) activation by coordination to metal oxido species has emerged as a new strategy in catalytic oxidations. Despite the many reports of enhancement of performance in oxidation catalysis, direct evidence for LA-catalyst interactions under catalytically relevant conditions is lacking. Here, we show, using the oxidation of alkenes with H2O2 and the catalyst [Mn2(μ-O)3(tmtacn)2](PF6)2 (1), that Lewis acids commonly used to enhance catalytic activity, e.g., Sc(OTf)3, in fact undergo hydrolysis with adventitious water to release a strong Brønsted acid. The formation of Brønsted acids in situ is demonstrated using a combination of resonance Raman, UV/vis absorption spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, isotope labeling, and DFT calculations. The involvement of Brønsted acids in LA enhanced systems shown here holds implications for the conclusions reached in regard to the relevance of direct LA-metal oxido interactions under catalytic conditions

    A Statistical Inference Method for Interpreting the CLASP Observations

    On 3rd September 2015, the Chromospheric Lyman-Alpha SpectroPolarimeter (CLASP) successfully measured the linear polarization produced by scattering processes in the hydrogen Lyman-α\alpha line of the solar disk radiation, revealing conspicuous spatial variations in the Q/IQ/I and U/IU/I signals. Via the Hanle effect the line-center Q/IQ/I and U/IU/I amplitudes encode information on the magnetic field of the chromosphere-corona transition region (TR), but they are also sensitive to the three-dimensional structure of this corrugated interface region. With the help of a simple line formation model, here we propose a statistical inference method for interpreting the Lyman-α\alpha line-center polarization observed by CLASP.Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journa

    The Case for Leverage-Based Corporate Human Rights Responsibility

    Should companies’ human rights responsibilities arise, in part, from their “leverage” – their ability to influence others’ actions through their relationships? Special Representative John Ruggie rejected this proposition in the United Nations Framework for business and human rights. I argue that leverage is a source of responsibility where there is a morally significant connection between the company and a rights-holder or rights-violator, the company is able to make a contribution to ameliorating the situation, it can do so at modest cost, and the threat to human rights is substantial. In such circumstances companies have a responsibility to exercise leverage even though they did nothing to contribute to the situation. Such responsibility is qualified, not categorical; graduated, not binary; context-specific; practicable; consistent with the social role of business; and not merely a negative responsibility to avoid harm but a positive responsibility to do good

    Odd non-linear conductivity under spatial inversion in chiral Tellurium

    Electrical transport in non-centrosymmetric materials departs from the well-established phenomenological Ohm's law. Instead of a linear relation between current and electric field, a non-linear conductivity emerges along specific crystallographic directions. This non-linear transport is fundamentally related to the lack of spatial inversion symmetry. However, the experimental implications of an inversion symmetry operation on the non-linear conductivity remain to be explored. Here, we report on a large, non-linear conductivity in chiral Tellurium. By measuring samples with opposite handedness, we demonstrate that the non-linear transport is odd under spatial inversion. Furthermore, by applying an electrostatic gate, we modulate the non-linear output by a factor of 300, reaching the highest reported value excluding engineered heterostructures. Our results establish chiral Te as an ideal compound not just to study the fundamental interplay between crystal structure, symmetry operations and non-linear transport, but also to develop wireless rectifiers and energy-harvesting chiral devices.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, Supplemental Materia

Focusing on the example of the invasive European green crab (Carcinus maenas), we show that the crab's estimated economic impact—which has been used to help justify recent public policy—is based on data taken from the wrong geographic location. Furthermore, the predictions of ecological effects appear to rest on loose footing, and economic methods have been misapplied in constructing the estimate.
