    Regulatory Dynamics on Random Networks: Asymptotic Periodicity and Modularity

    We study the dynamics of discrete-time regulatory networks on random digraphs. For this we define ensembles of deterministic orbits of random regulatory networks, and introduce some statistical indicators related to the long-term dynamics of the system. We prove that, in a random regulatory network, initial conditions converge almost surely to a periodic attractor. We study the subnetworks, which we call modules, where the periodic asymptotic oscillations are concentrated. We proof that those modules are dynamically equivalent to independent regulatory networks.Comment: 23 pages, 3 figure

    Examining perceptions of agility in software development practice

Copyright @ 2010 ACM.Organizations undertaking software development are often reminded that successful practice depends on a number of non-technical issues that are managerial, cultural and organizational in nature. These issues cover aspects from appropriate corporate structure, through software process development and standardization to effective collaborative practice. Since the articulation of the 'software crisis' in the late-1960s, significant effort has been put into addressing problems related to the cost, time and quality of software development via the application of systematic processes and management practices for software engineering. Early efforts resulted in prescriptive structured methods, which have evolved and expanded over time to embrace consortia/ company-led initiatives such as the Unified Modeling Language and the Unified Process alongside formal process improvement frameworks such as the International Standards Organization's 9000 series, the Capability Maturity Model and SPICE. More recently, the philosophy behind traditional plan-based initiatives has been questioned by the agile movement, which seeks to emphasize the human and craft aspects of software development over and above the engineering aspects. Agile practice is strongly collaborative in its outlook, favoring individuals and interactions over processes and tools, working software over comprehensive documentation, customer collaboration over contract negotiation, and responding to change over following a plan (see Sidebar 1). Early experience reports on the use of agile practice suggest some success in dealing with the problems of the software crisis, and suggest that plan-based and agile practice are not mutually exclusive. Indeed, flexibility may arise from this unlikely marriage in an aim to strike a balance between the rigor of traditional plan-based approaches and the need for adaptation of those to suit particular development situations. With this in mind, this article surveys the current practice in software engineering alongside perceptions of senior development managers in relation to agile practice in order to understand the principles of agility that may be practiced implicitly and their effects on plan-based approach

    Stellar sources in the ISOGAL intermediate bulge fields

    We present a study of ISOGAL sources in the "intermediate" galactic bulge (|ll| << 2^\circ, |bb| \sim 1^\circ--4^\circ), observed by ISOCAM at 7 and 15 μm\mu m. In combination with near-infrared (I, J, Ks_{\rm s}) data of DENIS survey, complemented by 2MASS data, we discuss the nature of the ISOGAL sources, their luminosities, the interstellar extinction and the mass-loss rates. A large fraction of the 1464 detected sources at 15 μm\mu m are AGB stars above the RGB tip, a number of them show an excess in ([7]-[15])0_{\rm 0} and (Ks_{\rm s}-[15])0_{\rm 0} colours, characteristic of mass-loss. The latter, especially (Ks_{\rm s}-[15])0_{\rm 0}, provide estimates of the mass-loss rates and show their distribution in the range 108^{-8} to 105^{-5} M_{\rm \odot}/yr.Comment: 16 pages, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic

    Mid-infrared imaging and spectroscopy of the enigmatic cocoon stars in the Quintuplet Cluster

    In an attempt to determine the nature of the enigmatic cocoon stars in the Quintuplet Cluster, we have obtained mid-infrared imaging and spectrophotometry of the cluster, using the CAM and SWS instruments on ISO, using SpectroCam-10 on the Palomar 5m telescope, and NICMOS on HST. The spectra show smooth continua with various dust and ice absorption features. These features are all consistent with an interstellar origin, and there is no clear evidence for any circumstellar contribution to these features. We find no spectral line or feature that could elucidate the nature of these sources. Detailed modeling of the silicate absorption features shows that they are best reproduced by the mu Cep profile, which is typical of the interstellar medium, with tau(sil) \sim 2.9. The high spatial resolution mid-IR images show that three of the five cocoon stars have spatially extended and asymmetric envelopes, with diameters of \sim 20,000 AUs. A reddening law similar to that of Lutz (1999) but with silicate features based on the mu Cep profile and normalized to our value of tau(sil) is used to deredden the observed spectrophotometry. The dereddened energy distributions are characterised by temperatures of 750-925 K, somewhat cooler than determined from near IR data alone. Models of optically thin and geometrically thick dust shells, as used by Williams et al. (1987) for very dusty, late-type WC stars, reproduce the observed SEDs from 4 to 17 mic, and imply shell luminosities of log(L/L(sun)) \sim 4.5-4.9 for the brightest four components. An analysis of the various suggestions proposed to explain the nature of the cocoon stars reveals serious problems with all the hypotheses, and the nature of these sources remains an enigma.Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, A&A style.     Este texto tem como objetivo principal analisar, em termos de estratégia mercadológica, as indicações geográficas (IGs) como instrumento de agregação de valor para o agronegócio brasileiro. Além de analisar a evolução do conceito de indicações geográficas no Brasil, na França e em outros países, este trabalho discute os aspectos mercadológicos desse mecanismo da propriedade intelectual. A fim de ilustrar e sustentar a discussão, apresentam-se os resultados de um estudo das IGs, levando-se em conta a percepção das vinícolas brasileiras e de um nicho do mercado consumidor de vinhos do Distrito Federal, Brasil. Neste estudo, foi observado que as IGs são um fator de diferenciação mercadológica nesse nicho de mercado e, também, uma característica relevante que agrega valor aos vinho s. No mínimo 57% dos consumidores pesquisados estariam dispostos a pagar mais por vinhos que possuíssem uma IG. Por sua vez, as vinícolas brasileiras estão cientes da importância mercadológica das IGs, já que 83% das empresas pesquisadas têm tomado iniciativa com esse propósito. Exceto em alguns casos, observou-se o quão distintas são as percepções dos atores da cadeia pesquisada em relação aos fatores mercadológicos estudados, principalmente sobre a IG. Por fim, são tecidas considerações a respeito das indicações geográficas como uma oportunidade de agregação de valor para o agronegócio brasileiro, sugerindo-se que a construção de uma estratégia mercadológica baseada nas indicações geográficas, tendo como público-alvo consumidores que buscam qualidade superior, pode ser comercialmente positiva para determinados produtores e regiões do agronegócio nacional

    Noise Effects on the Complex Patterns of Abnormal Heartbeats

    Patients at high risk for sudden death often exhibit complex heart rhythms in which abnormal heartbeats are interspersed with normal heartbeats. We analyze such a complex rhythm in a single patient over a 12-hour period and show that the rhythm can be described by a theoretical model consisting of two interacting oscillators with stochastic elements. By varying the magnitude of the noise, we show that for an intermediate level of noise, the model gives best agreement with key statistical features of the dynamics.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, RevTe

    Time-Dependent Solution for a Star Immersed in a Background Radiation

    We study a time-dependent and spherically-symmetric solution with a star-like source. We show that this solution can be interpreted as an exterior solution of a contracting star which has a decreasing temperature and is immersed in a homogenous and isotropic background radiation. Distribution of the temperature in the fields and close-to Schwarzschild approximation of the solution are studied. By identifying the radiation with the cosmic background one, we find that the close-to-Schwarzschild approximate solution is valid in a wide range in our solar system.
