    The Pauli principle, QRPA and the two-neutrino double beta decay

    We examine the violation of the Pauli exclusion principle in the Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation (QRPA) calculation of the two-neutrino double beta decay matrix elements, which has its origin in the quasi-boson approximation. For that purpose we propose a new renormalized QRPA with proton-neutron pairing method (full-RQRPA) for nuclear structure studies, which includes ground state correlation beyond the QRPA. This is achieved by using of renormalized quasi-boson approximation, in which the Pauli exclusion principle is taken into account more carefully. The full-RQRPA has been applied to two-neutrino double beta decay of 76Ge^{76}Ge, 82Se^{82}Se, 128Te^{128}Te and 130Te^{130}Te. The nuclear matrix elements have been found significantly less sensitive to the increasing strength of particle-particle interaction in the physically interesting region in comparison with QRPA results. The strong differences between the results of both methods indicate that the Pauli exclusion principle plays an important role in the evaluation of the double beta decay. The inclusion of the Pauli principle removes the difficulties with the strong dependence on the particle-particle strength gppg_{pp} in the QRPA on the two-neutrino double beta decay.Comment: Accepted for publication in Nucl.     Deep Learning Methods for Device Identification Using Symbols Trace Plot

    Devices authentication is one crucial aspect of any communication system. Recently, the physical layer approach radio frequency (RF) fingerprinting has gained increased interest as it provides an extra layer of security without requiring additional components. In this work, we propose an RF fingerprinting based transmitter authentication approach density trace plot (DTP) to exploit device-identifiable fingerprints. By considering IQ imbalance solely as the feature source, DTP can efficiently extract device-identifiable fingerprints from symbol transition trajectories and density center drifts. In total, three DTP modalities based on constellation, eye and phase traces are respectively generated and tested against three deep learning classifiers: the 2D-CNN, 2D-CNN+biLSTM and 3D-CNN. The feasibility of these DTP and classifier pairs is verified using a practical dataset collected from the ADALM-PLUTO software-defined radios (SDRs)

    Esta pesquisa buscou verificar, com base na lacuna de competências individuais, as necessidades de capacitação dos Técnico-Administrativos em Educação lotados na Secretaria de Gestão de Pessoas (SGP) da Universidade Federal do Vale do São Francisco (Univasf). O estudo de natureza qualitativa foi realizado em cinco etapas: análise dos elementos estratégicos; identificação das competências setoriais; identificação das competências individuais; identificação da lacuna de competências; e identificação das necessidades de capacitação. Os instrumentos utilizados para a coleta de dados desta pesquisa foram análise documental, entrevistas semiestruturadas, grupo focal e questionário. Como resultado do estudo, foram identificadas 56 competências individuais da SGP, sendo que a maioria dessas competências apresentou lacuna com variação igual ou inferior a cinco, indicando pouca ou nenhuma necessidade de capacitação. Apenas cinco competências individuais apresentaram variação da lacuna entre 12 a 20, indicando uma grande necessidade de capacitação dessas competências prioritárias, todas da área de saúde

    Student and staff perceptions and experiences of the introduction of Objective Structured Practical Examinations: A pilot study

    Background. The Objective Structured Practical Examination (OSPE) is widely recognised as one of the more objective methods of assessing practical skills in healthcare programmes, including undergraduate physiotherapy curricula.Objectives. To obtain feedback from both students and staff who were involved in the introduction of an OSPE in 2011, in order to refine and standardise the format throughout the curriculum.Methods. A qualitative research design was used. Data were gathered through a questionnaire with semi-structured open-ended items and focus group discussion. Participants were all third-year undergraduate physiotherapy students (N=47) and all staff members (N=10) in the 2011 academic year who were exposed to the OSPE format or were involved in the first OSPE.Results. The main concerns raised by both students and staff were: (i) pressure due to time constraints and how this might affect student performance; and (ii) the question of objectivity during the assessment. However, their initial concerns changed as they experienced the OSPE in a more positive manner owing to the structure and objectivity of the process of implementing the OSPE.Conclusion. While both students and staff reported positive experiences, the challenges that emerged provided valuable insight in terms of refining the OSPE format in this undergraduate physiotherapy department

    Experimental conditions affect the outcome of Plasmodium falciparum platelet-mediated clumping assays

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Platelet-mediated clumping of <it>Plasmodium falciparum</it>-infected erythrocytes (IE) is a parasite adhesion phenotype that has been associated with severe malaria in some, but not all, field isolate studies. A variety of experimental conditions have been used to study clumping <it>in vitro</it>, with substantial differences in parasitaemia (Pt), haematocrit (Ht), and time of reaction between studies. It is unknown whether these experimental variables affect the outcome of parasite clumping assays.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The effects of Pt (1, 4 and 12%), Ht (2, 5 and 10%) and time (15 min, 30 min, 1 h, 2 h) on the clumping of <it>P. falciparum </it>clone HB3 were examined. The effects of platelet freshness and parasite maturity were also studied.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>At low Ht (2%), the Pt of the culture has a large effect on clumping, with significantly higher clumping occurring at 12% Pt (mean 47% of IE in clumps) compared to 4% Pt (mean 26% IE in clumps) or 1% Pt (mean 7% IE in clumps) (ANOVA, p = 0.0004). Similarly, at low Pt (1%), the Ht of the culture has a large effect on clumping, with significantly higher clumping occurring at 10% Ht (mean 62% IE in clumps) compared to 5% Ht (mean 25% IE in clumps) or 2% Ht (mean 10% IE in clumps) (ANOVA, p = 0.0004). Combinations of high Ht and high Pt were impractical because of the difficulty assessing clumping in densely packed IE and the rapid formation of enormous clumps that could not be counted accurately. There was no significant difference in clumping when fresh platelets were used compared to platelets stored at 4°C for 10 days. Clumping was a property of mature pigmented-trophozoites and schizonts but not ring stage parasites.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The Pt and Ht at which <it>in vitro </it>clumping assays are set up have a profound effect on the outcome. All previous field isolate studies on clumping and malaria severity suffer from potential problems in experimental design and methodology. Future studies of clumping should use standardized conditions and control for Pt, and should take into account the limitations and variability inherent in the assay.</p

    Epstein-Barr virus transcription factor Zta acts through distal regulatory elements to directly control cellular gene expression

    Lytic replication of the human gamma herpes virus Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is an essential prerequisite for the spread of the virus. Differential regulation of a limited number of cellular genes has been reported in B-cells during the viral lytic replication cycle. We asked whether a viral bZIP transcription factor, Zta (BZLF1, ZEBRA, EB1), drives some of these changes. Using genome-wide chromatin immunoprecipitation coupled to next-generation DNA sequencing (ChIP-seq) we established a map of Zta interactions across the human genome. Using sensitive transcriptome analyses we identified 2263 cellular genes whose expression is significantly changed during the EBV lytic replication cycle. Zta binds 278 of the regulated genes and the distribution of binding sites shows that Zta binds mostly to sites that are distal to transcription start sites. This differs from the prevailing view that Zta activates viral genes by binding exclusively at promoter elements. We show that a synthetic Zta binding element confers Zta regulation at a distance and that distal Zta binding sites from cellular genes can confer Zta-mediated regulation on a heterologous promoter. This leads us to propose that Zta directly reprograms the expression of cellular genes through distal elements

    Impact of Seabed Resuspension on Oxygen and Nitrogen Dynamics in the Northern Gulf of Mexico: A Numerical Modeling Study

    Resuspension affects water quality in coastal environments by entraining seabed organic matter into the water column, which can increase remineralization, alter seabed fluxes, decrease water clarity, and affect oxygen and nutrient dynamics. Nearly all numerical models of water column biogeochemistry, however, simplify seabed and bottom boundary layer processes and neglect resuspension. Here we implemented HydroBioSed, a coupled hydrodynamic-sediment transport-biogeochemical model to examine the role of resuspension in regulating oxygen and nitrogen dynamics on timescales of a day to a month. The model was implemented for the northern Gulf of Mexico, where the extent of summertime hypoxia is sensitive to seabed and bottom boundary layer processes. Results indicated that particulate organic matter remineralization in the bottom water column increased by an order of magnitude during resuspension events. This increased sediment oxygen consumption and ammonium production, which were defined as the sum of seabed fluxes of oxygen and ammonium, plus oxygen consumption and ammonium production in the water column due to resuspended organic matter. The increases in remineralization impacted biogeochemical dynamics to a greater extent than resuspension-induced seabed fluxes and oxidation of reduced chemical species. The effect of resuspension on bottom water biogeochemistry increased with particulate organic matter availability, which was modulated by sediment transport patterns. Overall, when averaged over the shelf and on timescales of a month in the numerical model, cycles of erosion and deposition accounted for about two thirds of sediment oxygen consumption and almost all of the sediment ammonium production. In coastal waters, oxygen and nitrogen levels affect the health of fish and other organisms. In the Gulf of Mexico, for example, low-oxygen regions called hypoxic areas or dead zones form in the summertime near the seabed in bottom water . It can be difficult to understand and quantify variations in bottom water oxygen and nitrogen levels, however, because: (1) water quality there is affected by many different physical and biological processes; and (2) observational studies are limited by cost, safety and technological advances. To complement previous observational studies, this paper used a new numerical modeling approach that accounts for many physical and biological processes in the seabed and water. Specifically, we used the model to evaluate how resuspension, especially the entrainment of organic matter from the seabed into the water, affected oxygen and nitrogen levels in the Northern Gulf of Mexico. Model results indicated that resuspension increased the decomposition of organic matter, decreasing oxygen levels and increasing ammonium (a form of nitrogen) levels in bottom water. This effect was largest in regions with abundant seabed organic matter and frequent resuspension. These modeling results can help scientists and environmental managers understand how resuspension affects oxygen and nitrogen levels in bottom waters

    Many-body correlations in a multistep variational approach

    We discuss a multistep variational approach for the study of many-body correlations. The approach is developed in a boson formalism (bosons representing particle-hole excitations) and based on an iterative sequence of diagonalizations in subspaces of the full boson space. Purpose of these diagonalizations is that of searching for the best approximation of the ground state of the system. The procedure also leads us to define a set of excited states and, at the same time, of operators which generate these states as a result of their action on the ground state. We examine the cases in which these operators carry one-particle one-hole and up to two-particle two-hole excitations. We also explore the possibility of associating bosons to Tamm-Dancoff excitations and of describing the spectrum in terms of only a selected group of these.
