Electrochemical deprotonation of phosphate on stainless steel
Voltammetric experiments performed in phosphate buffer at constant pH 8.0 on platinum and stainless steel revealed clear reduction
currents, which were correlated to the concentrations of phosphate. On the basis of the reactions proposed previously, a model was elaborated,
assuming that both H2PO4 and HPO4
2 underwent cathodic deprotonation, and including the acid–base equilibriums. A kinetic model was
derived by analogy with the equations generally used for hydrogen evolution. Numerical fitting of the experimental data confirmed that the
phosphate species may act as an efficient catalyst of hydrogen evolution via electrochemical deprotonation. This reaction may introduce an
unexpected reversible pathway of hydrogen formation in the mechanisms of anaerobic corrosion. The possible new insights offered by the
electrochemical deprotonation of phosphate in microbially influenced corrosion was finally discussed
Role of the reversible electrochemical deprotonation of phosphate species in anaerobic biocorrosion of steels
Sulphate reducing bacteria are known to play a major role in anaerobic microbiological influenced
corrosion of steels, but mechanisms behind their influence are still source of debates as certain
phenomena remain unexplained. Some experiments have shown that hydrogen consumption by SRB
or hydrogenase increased the corrosion rate of mild steel. This was observed only in the presence of
phosphate species. Here the cathodic behaviour of phosphate species on steel was studied to elucidate
the role of phosphate in anaerobic corrosion of steel. Results showed: a linear correlation
between reduction waves in linear voltammetry and phosphate concentration at a constant pH value;
that phosphate ions induced considerable anaerobic corrosion of mild steel, which was sensitive to
hydrogen concentration in the solution; and that the corrosion potential of stainless steel in presence
of phosphate was shifted to more negative values as molecular hydrogen was added to the atmosphere
in the reaction vessel. Phosphate species, and possibly other weak acids present in biofilms,
are suggested to play an important role in the anaerobic corrosion of steels via a reversible mechanism
of electrochemical deprotonation that may be accelerated by hydrogen removal
Implementing an interprofessional information literacy course: Impact on student abilities and attitudes
Objectives: The authors investigated the impact of an interprofessional, freshman-level, information literacy course on nursing, pharmacy, and allied health professions students by examining whether students successfully met learning objectives in the course related to interprofessional attitudes, identification of research study types, and ability to relate evidence-based practice questions to their disciplines. Methods: Student posters (n=20) completed in a team project were evaluated to determine whether students were able to accurately identify the type of evidence, population, intervention, and primary outcome of studies (n=192). Additionally, posters (n=78) were evaluated to assess whether students could identify a relevant foreground question and link it to their disciplines. Students also completed the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS) before (n=413) and after (n=352) the course to determine whether their attitudes toward interprofessional learning changed. Results: Students performed well on learning outcomes in the course, with most teams identifying relevant evidence-based practice questions (83.8%) and effectively connecting questions with their disciplines (65.4%). Students correctly identified the type of evidence, population, intervention, and primary outcome for 70.0%, 81.8%, 76.0%, and 74.0% of cited studies, respectively. Student attitudes after the course did not significantly change. Conclusion: Interprofessional information literacy education can generate positive learning experiences for freshman health care professions students to increase their beginning-level understanding of research in the health care professions and to prepare them for participation in future interprofessional courses and health care teams
Testing for Network and Spatial Autocorrelation
Testing for dependence has been a well-established component of spatial
statistical analyses for decades. In particular, several popular test
statistics have desirable properties for testing for the presence of spatial
autocorrelation in continuous variables. In this paper we propose two
contributions to the literature on tests for autocorrelation. First, we propose
a new test for autocorrelation in categorical variables. While some methods
currently exist for assessing spatial autocorrelation in categorical variables,
the most popular method is unwieldy, somewhat ad hoc, and fails to provide
grounds for a single omnibus test. Second, we discuss the importance of testing
for autocorrelation in data sampled from the nodes of a network, motivated by
social network applications. We demonstrate that our proposed statistic for
categorical variables can both be used in the spatial and network setting
Aggregation Bias: A Proposal to Raise Awareness Regarding Inclusion in Visual Analytics
Data is a powerful tool to make informed decisions. They can be
used to design products, to segment the market, and to design policies. However,
trusting so much in data can have its drawbacks. Sometimes a set of
indicators can conceal the reality behind them, leading to biased decisions that
could be very harmful to underrepresented individuals, for example. It is challenging
to ensure unbiased decision-making processes because people have their
own beliefs and characteristics and be unaware of them. However, visual tools
can assist decision-making processes and raise awareness regarding potential
data issues. This work describes a proposal to fight biases related to aggregated
data by detecting issues during visual analysis and highlighting them, trying to
avoid drawing inaccurate conclusions

Simultaneous measurement of the ratio B(t->Wb)/B(t->Wq) and the top quark pair production cross section with the D0 detector at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV
We present the first simultaneous measurement of the ratio of branching
fractions, R=B(t->Wb)/B(t->Wq), with q being a d, s, or b quark, and the top
quark pair production cross section sigma_ttbar in the lepton plus jets channel
using 0.9 fb-1 of ppbar collision data at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV collected with the
D0 detector. We extract R and sigma_ttbar by analyzing samples of events with
0, 1 and >= 2 identified b jets. We measure R = 0.97 +0.09-0.08 (stat+syst) and
sigma_ttbar = 8.18 +0.90-0.84 (stat+syst)} +/-0.50 (lumi) pb, in agreement with

A Quasi-Model-Independent Search for New Physics at Large Transverse Momentum
We apply a quasi-model-independent strategy ("Sleuth") to search for new high
p_T physics in approximately 100 pb^-1 of ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV
collected by the DZero experiment during 1992-1996 at the Fermilab Tevatron.
Over thirty-two e mu X, W+jets-like, Z+jets-like, and 3(lepton/photon)X
exclusive final states are systematically analyzed for hints of physics beyond
the standard model. Simultaneous sensitivity to a variety of models predicting
new phenomena at the electroweak scale is demonstrated by testing the method on
a particular signature in each set of final states. No evidence of new high p_T
physics is observed in the course of this search, and we find that 89% of an
ensemble of hypothetical similar experimental runs would have produced a final
state with a candidate signal more interesting than the most interesting

Search for R-parity Violating Supersymmetry in Dimuon and Four-Jets Channel
We present results of a search for R-parity-violating decay of the neutralino
chi_1^0, taken to be the Lightest Supersymmetric Particle. It is assumed that
this decay proceeds through one of the lepton-number violating couplings
lambda-prime_2jk (j=1,2; k=1,2,3). This search is based on 77.5 pb-1 of data,
collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron in ppbar collisions at
a center of mass energy of 1.8 TeV in 1992-1995.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
Search for charged Higgs bosons decaying to top and bottom quarks in ppbar collisions
We describe a search for production of a charged Higgs boson, q \bar{q'} ->
H^+, reconstructed in the t\bar{b} final state in the mass range 180 <= M_{H^+}
<= 300 GeV. The search was undertaken at the Fermilab Tevatron collider with a
center-of-mass energy sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV and uses 0.9 fb^{-1} of data collected
with the D0 detector. We find no evidence for charged Higgs boson production
and set upper limits on the production cross section in the Types I, II and III
two-Higgs-doublet models (2HDMs). An excluded region in the (M_{H^+},tan\beta)
