    Level of adherence to prescribed exercise in spondyloarthritis and factors affecting this adherence: a systematic review

    Adherence is a primary determinant of the effectiveness of any intervention. Exercise is considered essential in the management of spondyloarthritis (SpA); however, the overall adherence to exercise programmes and factors affecting adherence are unknown. The aim of this systematic review was to examine measures of, and factors influencing adherence to, prescribed exercise programmes in people with SpA. A search was performed in August 2018 using five data bases; the Cochrane library, CINAHL, EMBASE, MEDLINE, and Web of Science Collections. Inclusion criteria were: studies with adults (> 18 years) with SpA, with a prescribed exercise intervention or educational programme with the aim of increasing exercise participation. Article quality was independently assessed by two assessors. Extracted descriptive data included: populations, interventions, measures of adherence and factors affecting adherence. Percentage adherence rates to prescribed exercises were calculated if not reported. Nine studies were included with a total of 658 participants, 95% of participants had a diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis. Interventions and measurement of adherence varied, making comparisons difficult. Rates of adherence ranged from 51.4 to 95%. Single studies identified; adherence improved following educational programmes, and higher disease severity and longer diagnostic delays were associated with higher adherence. Conflicting evidence was found as to whether supervision of exercise improved adherence. Three consecutive studies demonstrated adherence reduced over time. Adherence to prescribed exercise in SpA was poorly reported and predominately for people with AS. The levels of adherence and factors affecting prescribed exercise in SpA remain unclear. Future research should measure adherence across a longer time period and investigate possible factors which may influence adherence

    Sustainable Development Goal 6 aims to achieve universal access to water and sanitation services by 2030; this is expected to cost an estimated US150billionperyear.Wherewillthisfundingcomefrom?Onepossibilityisprivatefinanceintheformofdirectequityinvestmentfromprivatewatercompaniesandlendingfromcommercialbanks.Evidencesuggests,however,thatprivateinvestmentsinwaterandsanitationhavenotmaterialisedasplannedduetothesector′srisk−returnprofile.Waterandsanitationareconsidered‘toorisky’byprivateinvestorsandreturnsinsufficientlyrewarding.Onealternativethatmayhelptofillthewatersupplyandsanitation(WSS)fundinggapisanasyetuntappedsourceofpublicfinance:publicbanks.Thereareover900publicbanksintheworld,withUS150 billion per year. Where will this funding come from? One possibility is private finance in the form of direct equity investment from private water companies and lending from commercial banks. Evidence suggests, however, that private investments in water and sanitation have not materialised as planned due to the sector's risk - return profile. Water and sanitation are considered ‘too risky’ by private investors and returns insufficiently rewarding. One alternative that may help to fill the water supply and sanitation (WSS) funding gap is an as yet untapped source of public finance: public banks. There are over 900 public banks in the world, with US49 trillion in assets; they have, however, been largely underestimated as an important source of water and sanitation funding and have also been neglected by academic research and by mainstream policy organisations such as the World Bank. There is a need to better understand how public banks can be mobilised as effective funders of public water. In this article we provide a brief history of public banking practices in the water sector, review their pros and cons, and discuss the significance of the emergence of a new type of public water operator and the potential these entities offer for financing in this sector

    Contrasting mechanisms for crustal sulphur contamination of mafic magma: evidence from dyke and sill complexes from the British Palaeogene Igneous Province

In the British Palaeogene Igneous Province, mafic and ultramafic magmas intrude a thick sedimentary sequence offering opportunities to elucidate mechanisms of magma–crust interaction in a setting with heterogeneous S isotope signatures. We present S-isotopic data from sills and dykes on the Isle of Skye. Sharp contrasts exist between variably light δ34S in Jurassic sedimentary sulphide (−35‰ to −10‰) and a local pristine magmatic δ34S signature of −2.3 ± 1.5‰. Flat-lying sills have restricted δ34S (−5‰ to 0‰) whereas steeply dipping dykes are more variable (−0‰ to −2‰). We suggest that the mechanism by which magma is intruded exerts a fundamental control on the degree of crustal contamination by volatile elements. Turbulent flow within narrow, steep magma conduits, discordant to sediments, and developed by brittle extension or dilation have maximum contamination potential. In contrast, sill-like conduits emplaced concordantly to sediments show little contamination by crustal S. The province is prospective for Ni–Cu–PGE mineralization analogous to the sill-hosted Noril’sk deposit, and Cu/Pd ratios of sills and dykes on Skye indicate that magmas had already reached S-saturation before reaching the present exposure level.Sulphur isotope analysis was undertaken at the Scottish Universities Environment Research Centre (SUERC) and funded by an NERC Isotope Geosciences Facilities Steering Committee grant (IP-1356-1112).     Sulphide sinking in magma conduits: Evidence from mafic–ultramafic plugs on Rum and the wider North Atlantic Igneous Province

Available from the publisher via the DOI in this record.Ni–Cu–PGE (platinum group element) sulphide mineralization is commonly found in magmatic conduit systems. In many cases the trigger for formation of an immiscible sulphide liquid involves assimilation of S-bearing crustal rocks. Conceptually, the fluid dynamics of sulphide liquid droplets within such conduits is essentially a balance between gravitational sinking and upwards entrainment. Thus, crustal contamination signatures may be present in sulphides preserved both up- and down-flow from the point of interaction with the contaminant. We examine a suite of ultramafic volcanic plugs on the Isle of Rum, Scotland, to decipher controls on sulphide accumulation in near-surface magma conduits intruded into a variable sedimentary stratigraphy. The whole-rock compositions of the plugs broadly overlap with the compositions of ultramafic units within the Rum Layered Complex, although subtle differences between each plug highlight their individuality. Interstitial base metal sulphide minerals occur in all ultramafic plugs on Rum. Sulphide minerals have magmatic δ34S (ranging from –1·3 to +2·1‰) and S/Se ratios (mean = 2299), and demonstrate that the conduit magmas were already S-saturated. However, two plugs in NW Rum contain substantially coarser (sometimes net-textured) sulphides with unusually light δ34S (–14·7 to +0·3‰) and elevated S/Se ratios (mean = 4457), not represented by the immediate host-rocks. Based on the Hebrides Basin sedimentary stratigraphy, it is likely that the volcanic con duits would have intruded through a package of Jurassic mudrocks with characteristically light δ34S (–33·8 to –14·7‰). We propose that a secondary crustal S contamination event took place at a level above that currently exposed, and that these sulphides sank back to their present position. Modelling suggests that upon the cessation of active magma transport, sulphide liquids could have sunk back through the conduit over a distance of several hundreds of metres, over a period of a few days. This sulphide ‘withdrawal’ process may be observed in other vertical or steeply inclined magma conduits globally; for example, in the macrodykes of East Greenland. Sulphide liquid sinking within a non-active conduit or during magma ‘suck-back’ may help to explain crustal S-isotopic compositions in magma conduits that appear to lack appropriate lithologies to support this contamination, either locally or deeper in the system.Sulphur isotope analyses were funded by NERC Isotope Geosciences Facilities grant, IP-1356-1112.     Cu-Ni-PGE mineralisation at the Aurora Project and potential for a new PGE province in the Northern Bushveld Main Zone

Available from Elsevier via the DOI in this record.he Aurora Project is a Cu-Ni-PGE magmatic sulphide deposit in the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex of South Africa. Since 1992 mining in the northern limb has focussed on the Platreef deposit, located along the margin of the complex. Aurora has previously been suggested to represent a far-northern facies of the Platreef located along the basal margin of the complex and this study provides new data with which to test this assertion. In contrast to the Platreef, the base metal sulphide mineralisation at Aurora is both Cu-rich (Ni/Cu 50,000) reflecting the preferential removal of Pd over Cu in the sulphides below. Similarly high Cu/Pd ratios characterise the Upper Main Zone in the northern limb above the pigeonite + orthopyroxene interval and suggest that Aurora-style sulphide mineralisation may be developed here as well. The same mineralogy and geochemical features also appear to be present in the T Zone of the Waterberg PGE deposit, located under younger cover rocks to the north of Aurora. If these links are proved they indicate the potential for a previously unsuspected zone of Cu-Ni-PGE mineralisation extending for over 40 km along strike through the Upper Main Zone of the northern Bushveld.Sulphur isotope analyses were carried out by Alison MacDonald at the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre as part of NERC Isotope Geoscience Facilities Committee award IP/909/0506.     Carbon enrichment of the evolved stars in the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal

    We present spectra of 1142 colour-selected stars in the direction of the Sagittarius Dwarf Spheroidal (Sgr dSph) galaxy, of which 1058 were taken with VLT/FLAMES multi-object spectrograph and 84 were taken with the SAAO Radcliffe 1.9-m telescope grating spectrograph. Spectroscopic membership is confirmed (at >99% confidence) for 592 stars on the basis of their radial velocity, and spectral types are given. Very slow rotation is marginally detected around the galaxy's major axis. We identify five S stars and 23 carbon stars, of which all but four carbon stars are newly-determined and all but one (PQ Sgr) are likely Sgr dSph members. We examine the onset of carbon-richness in this metal-poor galaxy in the context of stellar models. We compare the stellar death rate (one star per 1000-1700 years) to known planetary nebula dynamical ages and find that the bulk population produce the observed (carbon-rich) planetary nebulae. We compute average lifetimes of S and carbon stars as 60-250 and 130-500 kyr, compared to a total thermal-pulsing asymptotic giant branch lifetime of 530-1330 kyr.     Controlling Restricted Random Testing: An Examination of the Exclusion Ratio Parameter

    In Restricted Random Testing (RRT), the main control parameter is the Target Exclusion Ratio (R), the proportion of the input domain to be excluded from test case generation at each iteration. Empirical investigations have consistently indicated that best failure-finding performance is achieved when the value for the Target Exclusion Ratio is maximised, i.e. close to 100%. This paper explains an algorithm to calculate the Actual Exclusion Ratio for RRT, and applies the algorithm to several simulations, confirming that previous empirically determined values for the Maximum Target Exclusion Ratio do give Actual Exclusion Ratios close to 100%. Previously observed trends of improvement in failure-finding efficiency of RRT corresponding to increases in Target Exclusion Ratios are also identified for Actual Exclusion Ratios.published_or_final_versio

    Estádios do desenvolvimento de plântula de café: uma justificativa para a redução do teste de germinação.

    A espécie Coffea arabica L. é uma das mais importantes commodites agrícolas do Brasil. Apesar dos consideraveis esforços para a viabilização da propagação vegetativa de plantas de café, estas ainda são propagadas por mudas produzidas a partir da semeadura direta de sementes. Uma característica indesejável de sementes de café é a sua lenta e desuniforme germinação, o que dificulta a obtenção de mudas de desejável qualidade. Além disto, esta lenta e desuniforme germinação dificulta uma avaliação rápida da germinação e do vigor das sementes, devido ao excessivo tempo requerido para a obtenção dos resultados. As Regras de Análise de Sementes-RAS requerem 30 dias para a obtenção dos resultados do teste de germinação de sementes de café. A descrição dos estádios permite uma caracterização mais precisa do desenvolvimento da plântula do que dias após a embebição, uma vez que fatores ambientais tem grande influência sobre a velocidade e uniformidade de crescimento de plântulas. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi identificar e descrever as fases de crescimento de plântulas de café, documentando as mudanças morfológicas que ocorrem durante os eventos germinativos e pós-germinativos. Oito estadios de crescimento da plântula foram descritos e os resultados demonstram que todas as partes essenciais de uma plântula de café estão presentes no estádio definido como Plântula 3-Raízes laterais no colo, o qual, ocorre aproximadamente no décimo quinto dia após a semeadura. Tais dados sugerem que o teste padrão de germinação de sementes de café pode ser substancialmente reduzido, permitindo mais rápida avaliação da qualidade das sementes
