Career changers and fast-track induction: teacher perspectives on their early professional development
In this article, the early professional development of mature, early career teachers who entered the profession via an employment-based route to teaching in England is presented and explored from the teachers’ own perspectives. From a larger sample in a longitudinal study, the development of four career changers is traced in detail, using a model of professional learning which highlights teaching and professional skills. There is some evidence that those who undertake the programme experience a smoother induction into teaching than those from more traditional routes, although the internship year itself is challenging and demands a high level of commitment and resilience on the part of the pre-service teachers.
Contextual factors, such as school support and learning from experienced teachers, are vital in enabling early professional development and the absence of these can hinder learning and self-confidence. Findings are analysed with reference to the model, as well as research on teachers’ development, within a socio-cultural learning framework. The study makes a valuable contribution to knowledge about the professional development of mature entrants to teaching
Study of the lineshape of the chi(c1) (3872) state
A study of the lineshape of the chi(c1) (3872) state is made using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb(-1) collected in pp collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV with the LHCb detector. Candidate chi(c1)(3872) and psi(2S) mesons from b-hadron decays are selected in the J/psi pi(+)pi(-) decay mode. Describing the lineshape with a Breit-Wigner function, the mass splitting between the chi(c1 )(3872) and psi(2S) states, Delta m, and the width of the chi(c1 )(3872) state, Gamma(Bw), are determined to be (Delta m=185.598 +/- 0.067 +/- 0.068 Mev,)(Gamma BW=1.39 +/- 0.24 +/- 0.10 Mev,) where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. Using a Flatte-inspired model, the mode and full width at half maximum of the lineshape are determined to be (mode=3871.69+0.00+0.05 MeV.)(FWHM=0.22-0.04+0.13+0.07+0.11-0.06-0.13 MeV, ) An investigation of the analytic structure of the Flatte amplitude reveals a pole structure, which is compatible with a quasibound D-0(D) over bar*(0) state but a quasivirtual state is still allowed at the level of 2 standard deviations

Study of the doubly charmed tetraquark T+cc
Quantum chromodynamics, the theory of the strong force, describes interactions of coloured quarks and gluons and the formation of hadronic matter. Conventional hadronic matter consists of baryons and mesons made of three quarks and quark-antiquark pairs, respectively. Particles with an alternative quark content are known as exotic states. Here a study is reported of an exotic narrow state in the D0D0π+ mass spectrum just below the D*+D0 mass threshold produced in proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The state is consistent with the ground isoscalar T+cc tetraquark with a quark content of ccu⎯⎯⎯d⎯⎯⎯ and spin-parity quantum numbers JP = 1+. Study of the DD mass spectra disfavours interpretation of the resonance as the isovector state. The decay structure via intermediate off-shell D*+ mesons is consistent with the observed D0π+ mass distribution. To analyse the mass of the resonance and its coupling to the D*D system, a dedicated model is developed under the assumption of an isoscalar axial-vector T+cc state decaying to the D*D channel. Using this model, resonance parameters including the pole position, scattering length, effective range and compositeness are determined to reveal important information about the nature of the T+cc state. In addition, an unexpected dependence of the production rate on track multiplicity is observed
Carbon fractions in the rhizosphere of pea inoculated with 2,4 diacetylphloroglucinol producing and non-producing Pseudomonas fluorescens F113

Copyright Blackwell Publishing DOI : 10.1046/j.1365-2672.1999.00809.xThe aim of this work was to determine the effect of wild type and functionally modified Pseudomonas fluorescens strains on C fractions in the rhizosphere of pea. The lacZY marked F113 strain produces the antibiotic 2,4 diacetylphloroglucinol (DAPG) useful in plant disease control. The modified strain of F113 was repressed in production of DAPG, creating the DAPG negative strain F113 G22. The F113 treatment resulted in a significantly lower shoot/root ratio. The F113 G22 treatment had a significantly greater indigenous and total fluorescent Pseudomonas population than the control and F113 (DAPG+) treatment. Both strains significantly increased the water soluble carbohydrates and the total water soluble carbon in the pea rhizosphere soil. Strain F113 significantly increased the soil protein content relative to the control but not in relation to the F113 G22 treatment. The F113 treatment had a significantly greater organic acid content than the control and F113 G22 treatments, whilst the F113 G22 treatment was also significantly greater than the control. Both inocula resulted in significantly lower phosphate contents than the control. The F113 inocula significantly increased alkaline phosphatase, sulphatase and urease activities, and reduced glucosidase activities indicating increased carbon availability. Both inocula increased C availability, however, antibiotic production by strain F113 reduced the utilisation of organic acids released from the plant resulting in differing effects of the two strains on nutrient availability, plant growth, soil enzyme activities and Pseudomonas populations.Peer reviewe
Does smoking in teenagers affect their everyday prospective memory performance?
We present a combination of tools which allows for investigation of the
coupled orbital and rotational dynamics of two rigid bodies with nearly
arbitrary shape and mass distribution, under the influence of their mutual
gravitational potential. Methods for calculating that mutual potential and
resulting forces and moments for a polyhedral body representation are simple
and efficient. Discrete equations of motion, referred to as the Lie Group
Variational Integrator (LGVI), preserve the structure of the configuration
space, SE(3), as well as the geometric features represented by the total energy
and the total angular momentum. The synthesis of these approaches allows us to
simulate the full two body problem accurately and efficiently. Simulation
results are given for two octahedral rigid bodies for comparison with other
integration methods and to show the qualities of the results thus obtained. A
significant improvement is seen over other integration methods while correctly
capturing the interesting effects of strong orbit and attitude dynamics
