Thermal stability and topological protection of skyrmions in nanotracks

Magnetic skyrmions are hailed as a potential technology for data storage and other data processing devices. However, their stability against thermal fluctuations is an open question that must be answered before skyrmion-based devices can be designed. In this work, we study paths in the energy landscape via which the transition between the skyrmion and the uniform state can occur in interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya finite-sized systems. We find three mechanisms the system can take in the process of skyrmion nucleation or destruction and identify that the transition facilitated by the boundary has a significantly lower energy barrier than the other energy paths. This clearly demonstrates the lack of the skyrmion topological protection in finite-sized magnetic systems. Overall, the energy barriers of the system under investigation are too small for storage applications at room temperature, but research into device materials, geometry and design may be able to address this

The uncertain representation ranking framework for concept-based video retrieval

Concept based video retrieval often relies on imperfect and uncertain concept detectors. We propose a general ranking framework to define effective and robust ranking functions, through explicitly addressing detector uncertainty. It can cope with multiple concept-based representations per video segment and it allows the re-use of effective text retrieval functions which are defined on similar representations. The final ranking status value is a weighted combination of two components: the expected score of the possible scores, which represents the risk-neutral choice, and the scores’ standard deviation, which represents the risk or opportunity that the score for the actual representation is higher. The framework consistently improves the search performance in the shot retrieval task and the segment retrieval task over several baselines in five TRECVid collections and two collections which use simulated detectors of varying performance

Representações da religiosidade romana no século II d.C.: o testemunho de Apuleio

O presente artigo constitui-se de reflexões sobre a religiosidade de Apuleio, intelectual romano que viveu no II século d.C. na África Romana. Neste sentido, apresentamos uma análise das características religiosas que cercaram este autor, tais como sua filosofia mística, o médio-platonismo, as práticas de cultos mistéricos próprias de sua filosofia, seu envolvimento com práticas de magia e a ocupação de cargo sacerdotal. Como fontes de pesquisa, utilizamos as obras do autor analisado: Apologia, Florida, O asno de ouro e O Deus de Sócrates. Ainda apresentamos a análise de uma sólida bibliografia a respeito de Apuleio e sobre o contexto abordado. Ressaltamos que Apuleio tem seu nome envolto em misticismo até hoje e foi acusado como praticante de magia em sua época, envolvendo-se em um processo jurídico.
