"Social Medication" and the control of children: A qualitative study of over-the-counter medication among Australian children
Objective. The aim of the study was to
identify the patterns of use of over-the-counter (OTC)
medications among children.
Methods. The study used a qualitative design, with
in-depth interviews of 40 parents with children <5 years
of age.
Results. There were 3 striking and readily apparent
themes in the use of OTC medications among children.
One was the administration of OTC medications as a
form of “social medication,” to give parents control over
children’s behavior that they perceived as fractious and
irritating. A related theme was the use of OTC medications
to reduce the inconvenience to the parents of having
a sick child, again giving parents greater control and
better time-management abilities. Finally, acetaminophen
was considered by many parents to have almost
miraculous properties in calming, sedating, and lifting
the mood of children.
Conclusions. The use of OTC medications for the
treatment of minor ailments among children is widespread,
despite the lack of evidence of efficacy of the
most commonly used medications and the potential for
toxicity. With the increasing propensity to look to medication
as a means of supporting changing lifestyles,
there is an urgent need to review the prevalence and
effects of social medication. Pediatrics 2004;

The gradient of potential vorticity, quaternions and an orthonormal frame for fluid particles
The gradient of potential vorticity (PV) is an important quantity because of
the way PV (denoted as ) tends to accumulate locally in the oceans and
atmospheres. Recent analysis by the authors has shown that the vector quantity
\bdB = \bnabla q\times \bnabla\theta for the three-dimensional incompressible
rotating Euler equations evolves according to the same stretching equation as
for \bom the vorticity and \bB, the magnetic field in magnetohydrodynamics
(MHD). The \bdB-vector therefore acts like the vorticity \bom in Euler's
equations and the \bB-field in MHD. For example, it allows various analogies,
such as stretching dynamics, helicity, superhelicity and cross helicity. In
addition, using quaternionic analysis, the dynamics of the \bdB-vector
naturally allow the construction of an orthonormal frame attached to fluid
particles\,; this is designated as a quaternion frame. The alignment dynamics
of this frame are particularly relevant to the three-axis rotations that
particles undergo as they traverse regions of a flow when the PV gradient
\bnabla q is large.Comment: Dedicated to Raymond Hide on the occasion of his 80th birthda

WORSHIP FACILITY IMPROVEMENT IN KELURAHAN SEI KERAH HILIR I KECAMATAN MEDAN PERJUANGAN, KOTA MEDAN
Have been done community service activities such as the identification and provision of facilities requiring increased to accommodate Islamic religious activities, community involvement as a partner with which the Badan Kemakmuran Masjid (BKM) Serikat Amal Baik Mosque and SDIT Zahira school in Kelurahan Sei Kera Hilir I Kecamatan Medan Perjuangan, Kota Medan. Succession of transfer of energy-saving knowledge and training within the framework of Islamic spiritual education development in a sustainable manner. The concept of education link and match between the world of education with the implementation of direct education (practice) on the field is done in this activity by linking (linkage activity method) between SDIT educational activities by utilizing as part of religious practice is a real education. The result of this increase in worship facilities helped accommodate the nation's next generation of Islamic worship activities, SDIT Zahira students joined the surrounding community in an effort to promote the prosperity of Islam as well as preserving the architectural artifacts of the Amal Good Union mosque as the identity and landmark of Gang Sado, Medan
Wave breaking for the Stochastic Camassa-Holm equation
We show that wave breaking occurs with positive probability for the Stochastic Camassa-Holm (SCH) equation. This means that temporal stochasticity in the diffeomorphic flow map for SCH does not prevent the wave breaking process which leads to the formation of peakon solutions. We conjecture that the time-asymptotic solutions of SCH will consist of emergent wave trains of peakons moving along stochastic space-time paths

On Minimizing Crossings in Storyline Visualizations
In a storyline visualization, we visualize a collection of interacting
characters (e.g., in a movie, play, etc.) by -monotone curves that converge
for each interaction, and diverge otherwise. Given a storyline with
characters, we show tight lower and upper bounds on the number of crossings
required in any storyline visualization for a restricted case. In particular,
we show that if (1) each meeting consists of exactly two characters and (2) the
meetings can be modeled as a tree, then we can always find a storyline
visualization with crossings. Furthermore, we show that there
exist storylines in this restricted case that require
crossings. Lastly, we show that, in the general case, minimizing the number of
crossings in a storyline visualization is fixed-parameter tractable, when
parameterized on the number of characters . Our algorithm runs in time
, where is the number of meetings.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. To appear at the 23rd International Symposium on

Ethnographic engagement from within a Football in the Community programme at an English Premier League football club
The present paper draws upon six years of applied practitioner research experience of the authors who were based within a Football in the Community (FitC) programme at an English Premier League football club in a deprived community in the UK. The paper explores the critical emergent issues concerned with participant recruitment, engagement and retention within a range of FitC physical activity, health improvement interventions with the following populations; primary school children, families, men aged 18–35 years and men aged 55 years and above. Results are drawn from a range of ethnographic, reflective and observational data collection and analysis techniques undertaken by the authors. A first person writing style is used alongside creative non-fiction vignettes. Results relating to the effectiveness of a range of behaviour and lifestyle change interventions are discussed. The authors conclude with a series of proposed operational and strategic ways forward for FitC schemes
