Effectiveness of Gaming in Creating Cultural Awareness
Despite the emphasis on cultural competency education in the United States for the past three decades, inequities and disparities in healthcare continue to persist, particularly among minority populations. With the current growing gap in provider and patient cultural congruence, how effectively we train students to work with diverse populations in healthcare settings warrants attention. This article presents the results of a qualitative study on the effectiveness of experiential learning, in the form of the game BaFa’ BaFa,’ in raising cultural awareness among students of health professions. Using thematic analysis, the authors analyzed written reflections from student participants. The findings support earlier studies, conducted mainly outside of healthcare, on the effectiveness of gaming in nurturing cultural awareness
Expression of Cadherin-11 during Organogenesis in the Chick Embryo
Cadherin-11 (cad-11) is primarily a mesenchymal cadherin that appears in delaminating neural crest cells. Its expression correlates with morphogenetic events and the pattern has been studied in mouse, rat and Xenopus embryos, but not during avian organogenesis. Our purpose was to investigate this pattern in the chick embryo during organogenesis using immunolocalization and in situ hybridization. Cad-11 was expressed in mesenchyme around the pharynx and aortic arches, eyes, auditory vesicles, lung buds, stomach, and nasal placodes. Neural expression included some cranial ganglia and also new neuroepithelium within the tail bud region undergoing secondary neurulation. We also found expression in epithelia of the developing circulatory and digestive organs. The limb buds, pineal rudiment and mesonephros were also positive. Cad-11 expression became more widespread with development. Our findings support the role of cad-11 as a mesenchymal cadherin, but provide evidence for a wider role that includes epithelial morphogenesis and secondary neurulation
NCI-MATCH Arms N & P: Phase II study of PI3K beta inhibitor GSK2636771 in patients (pts) with cancers (ca) with PTEN mutation/deletion (mut/del) or PTEN protein loss
Background: The NCI-MATCH trial is the largest national study (1173 sites) for ptswith relapsed/ refractory solid tumors, lymphomas and myeloma, which assigns tar-geted therapies based on individual tumor molecular alterations detected using theadapted Oncomine AmpliSeq panel (143 genes) and immunohistochemistry (IHC).We hypothesized that patients with PTEN-deficient cancers enrolled to Arms N and Pmay benefit from treatment with the PI3K beta-selective inhibitor GSK2636771.
Methods: Eligibility: relapsed/refractory ca, good end-organ function, and ECOG PS ≤ 1. Pts were screened for molecular alterations by centralized testing on fresh tumor biopsy and had deleterious PTEN mut/del without loss of expression (Arm N) or complete loss of cytoplasmic and nuclear PTEN staining on IHC (Arm P), and no other aberrations activating the PI3K/MTOR and MAPK pathways (mut in PIK3CA, PIK3R1, BRAF, KRAS, AKT1, TSC1/2, mTOR, RHEB, NF2, NRAS, HRAS). Pts received GSK2636771 400mg/day (28-days cycles). RECIST 1.1 overall response rate (ORR) was the primary endpoint.
Results: Of 59 enrolled pts, 56 were eligible and received treatment. Of 22 pts with PTEN mut/del (Arm N: 6 uterine, 2 breast, 2 prostate, 2 head/neck ca, 10 other), all are off treatment as of analysis (14 disease progression, 4 for adverse events [AEs], 4 other). One pt (4.5%) with prostate ca (PTEN deletion, MPRSS2-ERG fusion) attained a partial response (-42%). Of 7 (32%) pts with stable disease (SD), 2 had SD \u3e 6 months (uterine leiomyosarcoma; endometrial carcinoma). Of 34 pts with loss of PTEN protein by IHC (Arm P: 7 prostate, 6 breast, 3 squamous anal ca, 2 cholangiocarcinoma, 16 other), all are off treatment as of analysis (26 disease progression, 4 for AE, 4 other). Of 9 (37.5%) pts with SD, 3 had SD \u3e 6 months (prostate cancer; squamous bladder cancer, squamous anal cancer). Median progression-free survival was 1.8 months for both arms. Gr ≥ 3 treatment-related (tr) reversible toxicities were experienced by 30% (7) and 20% (7) of pts in arms N and P, respectively. No tr Gr 5 toxicities were observed in either arm.
Conclusions: Single agent GSK2636771 has very modest activity in ca with PTEN gene mutation/deletion and/or PTEN protein loss

Using a runway paradigm to assess the relative strength of rats' motivations for enrichment objects
Laboratory animals should be provided with enrichment objects in their cages; however, it is first necessary to
test whether the proposed enrichment objects provide benefits that increase the animals’ welfare. The two main
paradigms currently used to assess proposed enrichment objects are the choice test, which is limited to determining
relative frequency of choice, and consumer demand studies, which can indicate the strength of a preference but are complex to design. Here, we propose a third methodology: a runway paradigm, which can be used to assess the strength of an animal’s motivation for enrichment objects, is simpler to use than consumer demand studies, and is faster to complete than typical choice tests. Time spent with objects in a standard choice test was used to rank several enrichment objects in order to compare with the ranking found in our runway paradigm. The rats ran significantly more times, ran faster, and interacted longer with objects with which they had previously spent the most time. It was concluded that this simple methodology is suitable for measuring rats’ motivation to reach enrichment objects. This can be used to assess the preference for different types of enrichment objects or to measure reward system processes
Hypercomplex Integrable Systems
In this paper we study hypercomplex manifolds in four dimensions. Rather than
using an approach based on differential forms, we develop a dual approach using
vector fields. The condition on these vector fields may then be interpreted as
Lax equations, exhibiting the integrability properties of such manifolds. A
number of different field equations for such hypercomplex manifolds are
derived, one of which is in Cauchy-Kovaleskaya form which enables a formal
general solution to be given. Various other properties of the field equations
and their solutions are studied, such as their symmetry properties and the
associated hierarchy of conservation laws.Comment: Latex file, 19 page
Galactic bulge giants: probing stellar and galactic evolution I. Catalogue of Spitzer IRAC and MIPS sources
Aims: We aim at measuring mass-loss rates and the luminosities of a
statistically large sample of Galactic bulge stars at several galactocentric
radii. The sensitivity of previous infrared surveys of the bulge has been
rather limited, thus fundamental questions for late stellar evolution, such as
the stage at which substantial mass-loss begins on the red giant branch and its
dependence on fundamental stellar properties, remain unanswered. We aim at
providing evidence and answers to these questions. Methods: To this end, we
observed seven 15 times 15 arcmin^2 fields in the nuclear bulge and its
vicinity with unprecedented sensitivity using the IRAC and MIPS imaging
instruments on-board the Spitzer Space Telescope. In each of the fields, tens
of thousands of point sources were detected. Results: In the first paper based
on this data set, we present the observations, data reduction, the final
catalogue of sources, and a detailed comparison to previous mid-IR surveys of
the Galactic bulge, as well as to theoretical isochrones. We find in general
good agreement with other surveys and the isochrones, supporting the high

The North American and Pelican Nebulae I. IRAC Observations
We present a 9 deg^2 map of the North American and Pelican Nebulae regions
obtained in all four IRAC channels with the Spitzer Space Telescope. The
resulting photometry is merged with that at JHKs from 2MASS and a more
spatially limited survey from previous ground-based work. We use a
mixture of color- color diagrams to select a minimally contaminated set of more
than 1600 objects that we claim are young stellar objects (YSOs) associated
with the star forming region. Because our selection technique uses IR excess as
a requirement, our sample is strongly biased against inclusion of Class III
YSOs. The distribution of IRAC spectral slopes for our YSOs indicates that most
of these objects are Class II, with a peak towards steeper spectral slopes but
a substantial contribution from a tail of flat spectrum and Class I type
objects. By studying the small fraction of the sample that is optically
visible, we infer a typical age of a few Myr for the low mass population. The
young stars are clustered, with about a third of them located in eight clusters
that are located within or near the LDN 935 dark cloud. Half of the YSOs are
located in regions with surface densities higher than 1000 YSOs / deg^2. The

Young Stellar Object Variability (YSOVAR): Long Timescale Variations in the Mid-Infrared
The YSOVAR (Young Stellar Object VARiability) Spitzer Space Telescope
observing program obtained the first extensive mid-infrared (3.6 & 4.5 um)
time-series photometry of the Orion Nebula Cluster plus smaller footprints in
eleven other star-forming cores (AFGL490, NGC1333, MonR2, GGD 12-15, NGC2264,
L1688, Serpens Main, Serpens South, IRAS 20050+2720, IC1396A, and Ceph C).
There are ~29,000 unique objects with light curves in either or both IRAC
channels in the YSOVAR data set. We present the data collection and reduction
for the Spitzer and ancillary data, and define the "standard sample" on which
we calculate statistics, consisting of fast cadence data, with epochs about
twice per day for ~40d. We also define a "standard sample of members",
consisting of all the IR-selected members and X-ray selected members. We
characterize the standard sample in terms of other properties, such as spectral
energy distribution shape. We use three mechanisms to identify variables in the
fast cadence data--the Stetson index, a chi^2 fit to a flat light curve, and
significant periodicity. We also identified variables on the longest timescales
possible of ~6 years, by comparing measurements taken early in the Spitzer
mission with the mean from our YSOVAR campaign. The fraction of members in each
cluster that are variable on these longest timescales is a function of the
ratio of Class I/total members in each cluster, such that clusters with a
higher fraction of Class I objects also have a higher fraction of long-term
variables. For objects with a YSOVAR-determined period and a [3.6]-[8] color,
we find that a star with a longer period is more likely than those with shorter
periods to have an IR excess. We do not find any evidence for variability that
causes [3.6]-[4.5] excesses to appear or vanish within our data; out of members
