Achieving Consistent Doppler Measurements from SDO/HMI Vector Field Inversions
NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory is delivering vector field observations of
the full solar disk with unprecedented temporal and spatial resolution;
however, the satellite is in a highly inclined geostationary orbit. The
relative spacecraft-Sun velocity varies by ~km/s over a day which
introduces major orbital artifacts in the Helioseismic Magnetic Imager data. We
demonstrate that the orbital artifacts contaminate all spatial and temporal
scales in the data. We describe a newly-developed three stage procedure for
mitigating these artifacts in the Doppler data derived from the Milne-Eddington
inversions in the HMI Pipeline. This procedure was applied to full disk images
of AR11084 to produce consistent Dopplergrams. The data adjustments reduce the
power in the orbital artifacts by 31dB. Furthermore, we analyze in detail the
corrected images and show that our procedure greatly improve the temporal and
spectral properties of the data without adding any new artifacts. We conclude
that this new and easily implemented procedure makes a dramatic improvement in
the consistency of the HMI data and in its usefulness for precision scientific

Do dietary patterns in older men influence change in homocysteine through folate fortification? The Normative Aging Study
Objective We aimed to describe the difference in B-vitamin intake and in plasma B-vitamin and homocysteine concentrations before and after folic acid fortification, in relation to dietary patterns. Design The Normative Aging Study (NAS) is a longitudinal study on ageing. Between 1961 and 1970, 2280 male volunteers aged 21¿80 years (mean 42 years) were recruited. Dietary intake data have been collected since 1987 and assessment of plasma B vitamins and homocysteine was added in 1993. Setting Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Subjects In the present study, 354 men who had completed at least one FFQ and one measurement of homocysteine, both before and after the fortification period, were included. Results Three dietary patterns were identified by cluster analysis: (i) a prudent pattern, with relatively high intakes of fruit, vegetables, low-fat milk and breakfast cereals; (ii) an unhealthy pattern, with high intakes of baked products, sweets and added fats; and (iii) a low fruit and vegetable but relatively high alcohol intake pattern. Dietary intake and plasma concentrations of folate increased significantly (P <0·05) among all dietary patterns after the fortification period. Homocysteine tended to decrease in supplement non-users and in subjects in the high alcohol, low fruit and vegetable dietary pattern (both P = 0·08). Conclusions After fortification with folic acid, folate intake and plasma folate concentration increased significantly in all dietary patterns. An investigation into the feasibility of myoglobin-based single-electron transistors
Myoglobin single-electron transistors were investigated using nanometer- gap
platinum electrodes fabricated by electromigration at cryogenic temperatures.
Apomyoglobin (myoglobin without heme group) was used as a reference. The
results suggest single electron transport is mediated by resonant tunneling
with the electronic and vibrational levels of the heme group in a single
protein. They also represent a proof-of-principle that proteins with redox
centers across nanometer-gap electrodes can be utilized to fabricate
single-electron transistors. The protein orientation and conformation may
significantly affect the conductance of these devices. Future improvements in
device reproducibility and yield will require control of these factors
Deformations of calibrated subbundles of Euclidean spaces via twisting by special sections
We extend the "bundle constructions" of calibrated submanifolds, due to
Harvey--Lawson in the special Lagrangian case, and to
Ionel--Karigiannis--Min-Oo in the cases of exceptional calibrations, by
"twisting" the bundles by a special (harmonic, holomorphic, parallel) section
of a complementary bundle. The existence of such deformations shows that the
moduli space of calibrated deformations of these "calibrated subbundles"

Massive stars exploding in a He-rich circumstellar medium. IV. Transitional Type Ibn Supernovae
We present ultraviolet, optical and near-infrared data of the Type Ibn
supernovae (SNe) 2010al and 2011hw. SN 2010al reaches an absolute magnitude at
peak of M(R) = -18.86 +- 0.21. Its early light curve shows similarities with
normal SNe Ib, with a rise to maximum slower than most SNe Ibn. The spectra are
dominated by a blue continuum at early stages, with narrow P-Cygni He I lines
indicating the presence of a slow-moving, He-rich circumstellar medium. At
later epochs the spectra well match those of the prototypical SN Ibn 2006jc,
although the broader lines suggest that a significant amount of He was still
present in the stellar envelope at the time of the explosion. SN 2011hw is
somewhat different. It was discovered after the first maximum, but the light
curve shows a double-peak. The absolute magnitude at discovery is similar to
that of the second peak (M(R) = -18.59 +- 0.25), and slightly fainter than the
average of SNe Ibn. Though the spectra of SN 2011hw are similar to those of SN
2006jc, coronal lines and narrow Balmer lines are cleary detected. This
indicates substantial interaction of the SN ejecta with He-rich, but not
H-free, circumstellar material. The spectra of SN 2011hw suggest that it is a
transitional SN Ibn/IIn event similar to SN 2005la. While for SN 2010al the
spectro-photometric evolution favours a H-deprived Wolf-Rayet progenitor (of
WN-type), we agree with the conclusion of Smith et al. (2012) that the
precursor of SN 2011hw was likely in transition from a luminous blue variable
to an early Wolf-Rayet (Ofpe/WN9) stage.Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures, 6 tables. Accepted by MNRA
Super-Poincare' algebras, space-times and supergravities (I)
A new formulation of theories of supergravity as theories satisfying a
generalized Principle of General Covariance is given. It is a generalization of
the superspace formulation of simple 4D-supergravity of Wess and Zumino and it
is designed to obtain geometric descriptions for the supergravities that
correspond to the super Poincare' algebras of Alekseevsky and Cortes'

The heterogeneity of systemic inflammation in bronchiectasis
BACKGROUND: Systemic inflammation in bronchiectasis is poorly studied in relation to aetiology and severity. We hypothesized that molecular patterns of inflammation may define particular aetiology and severity groups in bronchiectasis. METHOD: We assayed blood concentrations of 31 proteins from 90 bronchiectasis patients (derivation cohort) and conducted PCA to examine relationships between these markers, disease aetiology and severity. Key results were validated in two separate cohorts of 97 and 79 patients from other centres. RESULTS: There was significant heterogeneity in protein concentrations across the derivation population. Increasing severity of bronchiectasis (BSI) was associated with increasing fibrinogen (rho = 0.34, p = 0.001 -validated in a second cohort), and higher fibrinogen was associated with worse lung function, Pseudomonas colonisation and impaired health-status. There were generally similar patterns of inflammation in patients with idiopathic and post-infectious disease. However, patients with primary immunodeficiency had exaggerated IL-17 responses, validated in a second cohort (n = 79, immunodeficient 12.82 pg/ml versus idiopathic/post-infectious 4.95 pg/ml, p = 0.001), and thus IL-17 discriminated primary immunodeficiency from other aetiologies (AUC 0.769 (95%CI 0.661-0.877)). CONCLUSION: Bronchiectasis is associated with heterogeneity of systemic inflammatory proteins not adequately explained by differences in disease aetiology or severity. More severe disease is associated with enhanced acute-phase responses. Plasma fibrinogen was associated with bronchiectasis severity in two cohorts, Pseudomonas colonisation and health status, and offers potential as a useful biomarker
A very faint core-collapse supernova in M85
An anomalous transient in the early Hubble-type (S0) galaxy Messier 85 (M85)
in the Virgo cluster was discovered by Kulkarni et al. (2007) on 7 January 2006
that had very low luminosity (peak absolute R-band magnitude MR of about -12)
that was constant over more than 80 days, red colour and narrow spectral lines,
which seem inconsistent with those observed in any known class of transient
events. Kulkarni et al. (2007) suggest an exotic stellar merger as the possible
origin. An alternative explanation is that the transient in M85 was a type
II-plateau supernova of extremely low luminosity, exploding in a lenticular
galaxy with residual star-forming activity. This intriguing transient might be

The effect of metallicity on the Cepheid distance scale and its implications for the Hubble constant () determination
Recent HST determinations of the expansion's rate of the Universe (the Hubble
constant, H_0) assumed that the Cepheid Period-Luminosity relation at V and I
are independent of metallicity (Freedman, et al., 1996, Saha et al., 1996,
Tanvir et al., 1995). The three groups obtain different vales for H_0. We note
that most of this discrepancy stems from the asumption (by both groups) that
the Period-Luminosity relation is independent of metallicity. We come to this
conclusion as a result of our study of the Period-Luminosity relation of 481
Cepheids with 3 millions two colour measurements in the Large Magellanic Cloud
and the Small Magellanic Cloud obtained as a by-product of the EROS
microlensing survey. We find that the derived interstellar absorption
corrections are particularly sensitive to the metallicity and when our result
is applied to recent estimates based on HST Cepheids observations it makes the
low-H_0 values higher and the high-H_0 value lower, bringing those discrepant

A kapwa-infused paradigm in teaching Catholic theology/catechesis in a multireligious classroom in the Philippines
The increasing religious diversity in educational space has raised a legitimate question on how Catholic theology/ catechesis must be taught in Philippine Catholic universities given the institutional mandate to educate students “into the faith of the Church through teaching of Christian doctrine in an organic and systematic way” (Wuerl, 2013, 1). On this note, the paper makes reference to “centered plural- ism” (CP), a positional posture espoused by Georgetown University in dealing with this predicament. In an attempt to (re) appropriate CP into local context, there is a need to explore the Filipino conception of self/others as enveloped within the indigenous concept of kapwa. Hereon, the paper finds that CP is not just feasibly suitable in local context but with kapwa's more inclusive description of the relationship of self and others, a CP‐based teaching paradigm in theology/ catechesis is a promising project in the educational scene of the Philippines
