Thermodynamic study of heavy metals behavior during municipal waste incineration
The incineration of municipal solid waste (MSW) contributes significantly to the presence of heavy metals in urban area aerosols. It is thus important to ascertain the quantities and chemical forms of the heavy metals (HM) that are emitted from the incineration plant stacks. The behaviour of HM, which depends strongly on the thermal and chemical environments, was investigated herein with a modelling approach, consisting of several parts. First, a refuse bed combustion model was developed for simulating on-grate MSW incineration. It describes most of the physico-chemical and thermal phenomena occurring during waste combustion. Second, results from the bed model were taken as boundary conditions to perform 3D simulations of the post-combustion zone and of the boiler. The case studied was of the Strasbourg incineration plant. Finally, the local thermal conditions and the local elementary compositions of gas and solid phases obtained from these simulations were used to carry out thermodynamic calculations of the speciation of HM at each point in the incinerator. The results for four metals (Cd, Zn, Pb, Cr) are presented, discussed and compared to available data. Predicted species are in agreement with observations for volatile metals, except lead, whose volatilization seems overestimated
Surface induced magnetization reversal of MnP nanoclusters embedded in GaP
We investigate the quasi-static magnetic behavior of ensembles of
non-interacting ferromagnetic nanoparticles consisting of MnP nanoclusters
embedded in GaP(001) epilayers grown at 600, 650 and 700{\deg}C. We use a
phenomenological model, in which surface effects are included, to reproduce the
experimental hysteresis curves measured as a function of temperature (120-260
K) and direction of the applied field. The slope of the hysteresis curve during
magnetization reversal is determined by the MnP nanoclusters size distribution,
which is a function of the growth temperature. Our results show that the
coercive field is very sensitive to the strength of the surface anisotropy,
which reduces the energy barrier between the two states of opposite
magnetization. Notably, this reduction in the energy barrier increases by a
factor of 3 as the sample temperature is lowered from 260 to 120 K.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
Intergalactic Dust Extinction in Hydrodynamic Cosmological Simulations
Recently Menard et al. detected a subtle but systematic change in the mean
color of quasars as a function of their projected separation from foreground
galaxies, extending to comoving separations of ~10Mpc/h, which they interpret
as a signature of reddening by intergalactic dust. We present theoretical
models of this remarkable observation, using SPH cosmological simulations of a
(50Mpc/h)^3 volume. Our primary model uses a simulation with galactic winds and
assumes that dust traces the intergalactic metals. The predicted galaxy-dust
correlation function is similar in form to the galaxy-mass correlation
function, and reproducing the MSFR data requires a dust-to-metal mass ratio of
0.24, about half the value in the Galactic ISM. Roughly half of the reddening
arises in dust that is more than 100Kpc/h from the nearest massive galaxy. We
also examine a simulation with no galactic winds, which predicts a much smaller
fraction of intergalactic metals (3% vs. 35%) and therefore requires an
unphysical dust-to-metal ratio of 2.18 to reproduce the MSFR data. In both
models, the signal is dominated by sightlines with E(g-i)=0.001-0.1. The
no-wind simulation can be reconciled with the data if we also allow reddening
to arise in galaxies up to several x 10^10 Msun. The wind model predicts a mean
visual extinction of A_V ~0.0133 mag out to z=0.5, with a
sightline-to-sightline dispersion similar to the mean, which could be
significant for future supernova cosmology studies. Reproducing the MSFR
results in these simulations requires that a large fraction of ISM dust survive
its expulsion from galaxies and its residence in the intergalactic medium.
Future observational studies that provide higher precision and measure the
dependence on galaxy type and environment will allow detailed tests for models
of enriched galactic outflows and the survival of IG dust.Comment: Matches version accepted by MNRA

Combination of carbon nanotubes and two-photon absorbers for broadband optical limiting
New systems are required for optical limiting against broadband laser pulses.
We demonstrate that the association of non-linear scattering from single-wall
carbon nanotubes (SWNT) and multiphoton absorption (MPA) from organic
chromophores is a promising approach to extend performances of optical limiters
over broad spectral and temporal ranges. Such composites display high linear
transmission and good neutral colorimetry and are particularly efficient in the
nanosecond regime due to cumulative effects.Comment: 5 avril 200
Tomographic Magnification of Lyman Break Galaxies in The Deep Lens Survey
Using about 450,000 galaxies in the Deep Lens Survey, we present a detection
of the gravitational magnification of z > 4 Lyman Break Galaxies by massive
foreground galaxies with 0.4 < z < 1.0, grouped by redshift. The magnification
signal is detected at S/N greater than 20, and rigorous checks confirm that it
is not contaminated by any galaxy sample overlap in redshift. The inferred
galaxy mass profiles are consistent with earlier lensing analyses at lower
redshift. We then explore the tomographic lens magnification signal by
splitting our foreground galaxy sample into 7 redshift bins. Combining
galaxy-magnification cross-correlations and galaxy angular auto-correlations,
we develop a bias-independent estimator of the tomographic signal. As a
diagnostic of magnification tomography, the measurement of this estimator
rejects a flat dark matter dominated Universe at > 7.5{\sigma} with a fixed
\sigma_8 and is found to be consistent with the expected redshift-dependence of
the WMAP7 {\Lambda}CDM cosmology.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, Accepted to MNRA
