A methodology for the decomposition of discrete event models for parallel simulation
Parallel simulation has presented the possibility of performing high-speed simulation. However, when attempting to make a link between the requirements of parallel simulation and discrete event simulation used in commercial areas such as manufacturing, a major problem arises. This lies in the decomposition of the simulation into a series of concurrently executing objects. Using the activity cycle diagram simulation technique as an illustrative example, this paper suggests a solution to this decomposition problem. This is discussed within the context of providing a conceptually seamless methodology for translating simulation models into a form which can exploit the benefits of parallel computing
Cycles of construing in radicalization and deradicalization: a study of Salafist Muslims.
© Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.This article explores radicalization and deradicalization by considering the experiences of six young Tunisian people who had become Salafist Muslims. Their responses to narrative interviews and repertory grid technique are considered from a personal construct perspective, revealing processes of construing and reconstruing, as well as relevant aspects of the structure and content of their construct systems. In two cases, their journeys involved not only radicalization but self-deradicalization, and their experiences are drawn on to consider implications for deradicalization.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
EarthN: A new Earth System Nitrogen Model
The amount of nitrogen in the atmosphere, oceans, crust, and mantle have
important ramifications for Earth's biologic and geologic history. Despite this
importance, the history and cycling of nitrogen in the Earth system is poorly
constrained over time. For example, various models and proxies contrastingly
support atmospheric mass stasis, net outgassing, or net ingassing over time. In
addition, the amount available to and processing of nitrogen by organisms is
intricately linked with and provides feedbacks on oxygen and nutrient cycles.
To investigate the Earth system nitrogen cycle over geologic history, we have
constructed a new nitrogen cycle model: EarthN. This model is driven by mantle
cooling, links biologic nitrogen cycling to phosphate and oxygen, and
incorporates geologic and biologic fluxes. Model output is consistent with
large (2-4x) changes in atmospheric mass over time, typically indicating
atmospheric drawdown and nitrogen sequestration into the mantle and continental
crust. Critical controls on nitrogen distribution include mantle cooling
history, weathering, and the total Bulk Silicate Earth+atmosphere nitrogen
budget. Linking the nitrogen cycle to phosphorous and oxygen levels, instead of
carbon as has been previously done, provides new and more dynamic insight into
the history of nitrogen on the planet.Comment: 36 pages, 12 figure
Deep brain stimulation in schizophrenia
Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has successfully advanced treatment options of putative therapy-resistant
neuropsychiatric diseases. Building on this strong foundation more and more mental disorders in the
stadium of therapy-resistance are considered as possible indications for DBS. Especially schizophrenia
with its associated severe and difficult to treat symptoms is gaining attention. This attention demands
critical questions regarding the assumed mechanisms of DBS and its possible influence on the supposed
pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Here we synoptically compare current approaches and theories of
DBS and discuss the feasibility of DBS in schizophrenia as well as the transferability from other
psychiatric disorders successfully treated with DBS. For this we consider recent advances in animal
models of schizophrenic symptoms, results regarding the influence of DBS on dopaminergic
transmission as well as data concerning neural oscillation and synchronization. In conclusion the use of
DBS for some symptoms of schizophrenia seems to be a promising approach, but the lack of a
comprehensive theory of the mechanisms of DBS as well as its impact on schizophrenia might void the
use of DBS in schizophrenia at this point
Constructive counterexamples to additivity of minimum output R\'enyi entropy of quantum channels for all p>2
We present a constructive example of violation of additivity of minimum
output R\'enyi entropy for each p>2. The example is provided by antisymmetric
subspace of a suitable dimension. We discuss possibility of extension of the
result to go beyond p>2 and obtain additivity for p=0 for a class of
entanglement breaking channels.Comment: 4 pages; a reference adde

Development of ultrasonic methods for hemodynamic measurements
A transcutanous method to measure instantaneous mean blood flow in peripheral arteries of the human body was defined. Transcutanous and implanted cuff ultrasound velocity measurements were evaluated, and the accuracies of velocity, flow, and diameter measurements were assessed for steady flow. Performance criteria were established for the pulsed Doppler velocity meter (PUDVM), and performance tests were conducted. Several improvements are suggested
