Enhanced Parallel Generation of Tree Structures for the Recognition of 3D Images
Segmentations of a digital object based on a connectivity
criterion at n-xel or sub-n-xel level are useful tools in image topological
analysis and recognition. Working with cell complex analogous of digital
objects, an example of this kind of segmentation is that obtained from
the combinatorial representation so called Homological Spanning Forest
(HSF, for short) which, informally, classifies the cells of the complex as
belonging to regions containing the maximal number of cells sharing the
same homological (algebraic homology with coefficient in a field) information.
We design here a parallel method for computing a HSF (using
homology with coefficients in Z/2Z) of a 3D digital object. If this object
is included in a 3D image of m1 × m2 × m3 voxels, its theoretical time
complexity order is near O(log(m1 + m2 + m3)), under the assumption
that a processing element is available for each voxel. A prototype implementation
validating our results has been written and several synthetic,
random and medical tridimensional images have been used for testing.
The experiments allow us to assert that the number of iterations in which
the homological information is found varies only to a small extent from

Synchronization in a ring of pulsating oscillators with bidirectional couplings
We study the dynamical behavior of an ensemble of oscillators interacting
through short range bidirectional pulses. The geometry is 1D with periodic
boundary conditions. Our interest is twofold. To explore the conditions
required to reach fully synchronization and to invewstigate the time needed to

Extracting topological features from dynamical measures in networks of Kuramoto oscillators
The Kuramoto model for an ensemble of coupled oscillators provides a
paradigmatic example of non-equilibrium transitions between an incoherent and a
synchronized state. Here we analyze populations of almost identical oscillators
in arbitrary interaction networks. Our aim is to extract topological features
of the connectivity pattern from purely dynamical measures, based on the fact
that in a heterogeneous network the global dynamics is not only affected by the
distribution of the natural frequencies, but also by the location of the
different values. In order to perform a quantitative study we focused on a very
simple frequency distribution considering that all the frequencies are equal
but one, that of the pacemaker node. We then analyze the dynamical behavior of
the system at the transition point and slightly above it, as well as very far
from the critical point, when it is in a highly incoherent state. The gathered
topological information ranges from local features, such as the single node
connectivity, to the hierarchical structure of functional clusters, and even to

Understanding chemical evolution in resolved galaxies -- I The local star fraction-metallicity relation
This work studies the relation between gas-phase oxygen abundance and
stellar-to-gas fraction in nearby galaxies. We first derive the theoretical
prediction, and argue that this relation is fundamental, in the sense that it
must be verified regardless of the details of the gas accretion and star
formation histories. Moreover, it should hold on "local" scales, i.e. in
regions of the order of 1 kpc. These predictions are then compared with a set
of spectroscopic observations, including both integrated and resolved data.
Although the results depend somewhat on the adopted metallicity calibration,
observed galaxies are consistent with the predicted relation, imposing tight
constraints on the mass-loading factor of (enriched) galactic winds. The
proposed parametrization of the star fraction-metallicity relation is able to
describe the observed dependence of the oxygen abundance on gas mass at fixed
stellar mass. However, the "local" mass-metallicity relation also depends on
