This report documents a parametric sizing study performed to develop a program strategy for research and development and procurement of a feasible next-generation hypersonic air-breathing endurance demonstrator. Overall project focus has been on complementing technical and managerial decision-making during the earliest conceptual design phase towards minimization of operational, technical, and managerial risks

A conceptual design tool to support high-speed vehicle design

This paper aims at presenting an integrated multidisciplinary methodology and the related software tool, called ASTRID-H, developed at Politecnico di Torino to support the conceptual and preliminary design phases of high-speed vehicles. Based on the experience in the development of innovative methodologies to cope with complex and highly integrated aircraft, ASTRID-H has been developed to guide students, researchers and engineers through the very first phases of the design of high-speed vehicles. ASTRID-H supports the users to move from the statistical evaluation of the guess data and the identification of the design space to the geometrical characterization of the vehicle guaranteeing a proper integration of the main subsystems. Already available and widely used mathematical models are here integrated in a new algorithm to face the complexity of the design of high-speed vehicles. In addition, the coefficients of the semi-empirical models that were not focusing on high-speed vehicles have been updated to widen classical theories to cover high-speed vehicles. The resulting implemented methodology allows the users to cope with complex multidisciplinary problems, which encompass a variety of interrelated disciplines and heterogeneous levels of fidelity. Furthermore, this paper reports the some of the main results achieved during the validation of the methodology thanks to the application to the STRATOFLY MR3 vehicle case study. STRATOFLY MR3 is a Mach 8 waverider configuration that stems from more than a decade of European research activities in the field of high-speed and currently under investigation in the Horizon 2020 STRATOFLY Project

Urban design as a tool for re-imaging a capital city : planning Conakry, Guinea after independence

Thesis (M.C.P.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning, 2001."June 2001."Includes bibliographical references (leaves 132-136).Guinea, unlike any other French colony in West Africa, had refused assistance from the French in transitioning to an independent nation. As a result much of what the French had created began to decay lying unused by the new nation and abandoned by the French, leaving behind what were described as ghosts. These ghosts were abandoned buildings and railways throughout the country. There were other ghosts besides the abandoned infrastructure of the French. They had in fact influenced the shape of cities and architecture. In this research I intend to answer the following question: How does a newly independent former colonial capital city use urban design plans to create a new image representing the new nation? To answer this question I will explore the attempts of Conakry, Guinea to use an urban design plan (1963) to redistribute land and resources to create a new post independence image. This question thus entails an analysis of intentions. What actions did the plan propose to create a unique image of a capital city in an independent nation opposed to a colonial territory? How were the political, social and economic ideals of the new nations represented in the design? To understand the design plan I first examine Guinea and Conakry's historical past to gain an understanding of the existing conditions at independence. I then explore the theory of creating a national image, African responses to independence and several case studies in order to understand common trends and the process of re-imaging a post-independence capital city. Analysis of the 1963 urban design plan for Conakry reveals four large gestures that were to create a post-independence image for the city. First, the plan decentralized the urban and political city centers. Second, circulation focused on developing connections within the City opposed to creating a flow toward the port and out of the City. Third, public services were to be distributed equally throughout the City for all citizens. Lastly, the City was to become homogeneous, where all people were equal, and segregation ceased to exist.by Jennifer Czysz.M.C.P

„Still offline”: evidence from qualitative studies on the hybridization of spontaneous cognitive activity

    Get PDF
Background: In the contemporary culture we observed a kind of apology for the hybridization of cognitive activity. Nevertheless, we don’t know is it a real phenomenon or only a facade. To shed some new light on this issue, we investigated two qualitative studies on the hybridization of spontaneous cognitive activity. Methods: Three martial arts masters and four triathletes took part in these studies. A structured interview was used to collect data. Results: We found that professional and experienced athletes do not recognize a big potential for hybridization. They can’t imagine a strong hybridization of own, and their students, spontaneous cognitive activity, both in the current and the future technological reality. Conclusions: This study contradicts the idea of the superiority (in the cognitive contexts) of what online, over what offline.4211712910.14746/se.2016.41.8Studia edukacyjn

Processos de transição com ingresso de bebês na educação infantil: revisão bibliográfica

    Get PDF
