Computing CMB Anisotropy in Compact Hyperbolic Spaces
The measurements of CMB anisotropy have opened up a window for probing the
global topology of the universe on length scales comparable to and beyond the
Hubble radius. For compact topologies, the two main effects on the CMB are: (1)
the breaking of statistical isotropy in characteristic patterns determined by
the photon geodesic structure of the manifold and (2) an infrared cutoff in the
power spectrum of perturbations imposed by the finite spatial extent. We
present a completely general scheme using the regularized method of images for
calculating CMB anisotropy in models with nontrivial topology, and apply it to
the computationally challenging compact hyperbolic topologies. This new
technique eliminates the need for the difficult task of spatial eigenmode
decomposition on these spaces. We estimate a Bayesian probability for a
selection of models by confronting the theoretical pixel-pixel temperature
correlation function with the COBE-DMR data. Our results demonstrate that
strong constraints on compactness arise: if the universe is small compared to
the `horizon' size, correlations appear in the maps that are irreconcilable
with the observations. If the universe is of comparable size, the likelihood
function is very dependent upon orientation of the manifold wrt the sky. While
most orientations may be strongly ruled out, it sometimes happens that for a
specific orientation the predicted correlation patterns are preferred over the

Augmenting forearm crutches with wireless sensors for lower limb rehabilitation
Forearm crutches are frequently used in the rehabilitation of an injury to the lower limb. The recovery rate is improved if the patient correctly applies a certain fraction of their body weight (specified by a clinician) through the axis of the crutch, referred to as partial weight bearing (PWB). Incorrect weight bearing has been shown to result in an extended recovery period or even cause further damage to the limb. There is currently no minimally invasive tool for long-term monitoring of a patient's PWB in a home environment. This paper describes the research and development of an instrumented forearm crutch that has been developed to wirelessly and autonomously monitor a patient's weight bearing over the full period of their recovery, including its potential use in a home environment. A pair of standard forearm crutches are augmented with low-cost off-the-shelf wireless sensor nodes and electronic components to provide indicative measurements of the applied weight, crutch tilt and hand position on the grip. Data are wirelessly transmitted between crutches and to a remote computer (where they are processed and visualized in LabVIEW), and the patient receives biofeedback by means of an audible signal when they put too much or too little weight through the crutch. The initial results obtained highlight the capability of the instrumented crutch to support physiotherapists and patients in monitoring usage

group. The concept of a subset current is related to the notion of an
"invariant random subgroup" with respect to some conjugacy-invariant
probability measure on the space of closed subgroups of a topological group. If

A New Method for Manufacturing Process Autonomous Planning in Intelligent Manufacturing System
This paper presents a new method for autonomous computer-aided process planning (A-CAPP) in an intelligent manufacturing system, in which the related input and output of the system are discussed on the basis of comparative analysis of traditional CAPP. The crucial functional components of the A-CAPP system, such as event scheduling management, manufacturing process planning, operation process/step planning, numerical control machining program planning, process simulation and evaluation, are introduced; and the methods of process knowledge management, including process feature knowledge, manufacturing resource knowledge and process method knowledge, are discussed as well. A-CAPP applied for intelligent manufacturing system can effectively support the production line reconstruction dynamically; shorten the time of production line configuration modification in accordance with customers’ requirement change or market requirement fluctuation, and furthermore to balance the production lines load

Twenty-first century learners face a multi-literacy landscape as they strive to acquire the cognitive skills needed for independent learning, apply linguistic skills to other knowledge base, and become computer literate. This article envisions a combination of skill sets and knowledge bases as the foundation of a literary competence-based curriculum. Such a curriculum would have the goal of enhancing young learners"critical thinking abilities; this would also help them take charge of the cognitive,linguistic, and sociocultural dimensions of written and spoken language in order to make learning transferable and applicable to the real world

A Discourse Analysis of Pilgrimage Reviews
This paper is the first to provide an account of the discursive features of online consumer reviews of pilgrimage sites. Drawing from pilgrimage studies and narrativity theory in consumer research, we explore how consumers communicate the spiritual and material aspects of pilgrimage experiences by examining a corpus of 833 consumer reviews on TripAdvisor of the most sacred pilgrimage sites of the world’s major five faith groups. Pilgrims include analytical discursive features to communicate the material aspect of their consumption experience. They reserve narration for spiritual transformation and the experience of strong emotions. Moreover, review ratings are only reflective of the spiritual aspect of their consumption experience. As such, our research complements previous studies by highlighting the material, physical aspect of this extraordinary consumption experience
Transgene regulation in plants by alternative splicing of a suicide exon
Compared to transcriptional activation, other mechanisms of gene regulation have not been widely exploited for the control of transgenes. One barrier to the general use and application of alternative splicing is that splicing-regulated transgenes have not been shown to be reliably and simply designed. Here, we demonstrate that a cassette bearing a suicide exon can be inserted into a variety of open reading frames (ORFs), generating transgenes whose expression is activated by exon skipping in response to a specific protein inducer. The surprisingly minimal sequence requirements for the maintenance of splicing fidelity and regulation indicate that this splicing cassette can be used to regulate any ORF containing one of the amino acids Glu, Gln or Lys. Furthermore, a single copy of the splicing cassette was optimized by rational design to confer robust gene activation with no background expression in plants. Thus, conditional splicing has the potential to be generally useful for transgene regulation

Diagnostic Accuracy of a Prototype Point-of-Care Test for Ocular Chlamydia trachomatis under Field Conditions in The Gambia and Senegal
Trachoma, caused by infection of the eye with the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis, is the leading infectious cause of blindness and is associated with poverty. Antibiotic treatment of all community members is one of the recommended control strategies for trachoma. However, in places where the prevalence of clinical signs is low, C. trachomatis eye infection is often absent. Laboratory testing for C. trachomatis infection by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is highly sensitive but expensive and requires well-trained staff. A simple point-of-care (POC) test that can be used in trachoma-affected communities could help trachoma control efforts. We evaluated a POC test for C. trachomatis eye infection. Children under 10 years of age were screened for clinical signs of trachoma and C. trachomatis eye infection. The POC test result was compared with laboratory PCR test results. The POC test detected just over half of PCR test positives correctly. However, the POC test tended to give false-positive results in hot and dry conditions, which is the typical environment of trachoma. The POC test requires high specificity since it would be used to make treatment decisions at the community level. Therefore, its present format requires improvement before it can be utilized in trachoma control
