A model of membrane contraction predicting initiation and completion of bacterial cell division
Bacterial cell division involves a complex and dynamic sequence of events whereby polymers of the protein FtsZ assemble at the division plane and rearrange to achieve the goal of contracting the cell membrane at the site of cell division, thus dividing the parent cell into two daughter cells. We present a mathematical model (which we refer to as CAM-FF: Critical Accumulation of Membrane-bound FtsZ Fibres) of the assembly of the contractile ring in terms of the accumulation of short linear polymers of FtsZ that associate and dissociate from the cell membrane. In prokaryotes, the biochemical function of FtsZ is thought to underpin the assembly and at least the initial kinetic force of ring contraction. Our model extends earlier work of Surovtsev et al. [PLoS Comput. Biol., 2008, 4, e1000102] by adding (i) the kinetics of FtsZ accumulation on cell membrane anchor proteins and (ii) the physical forces required to deform the cell against its surface tension. Moreover, we provide a more rigorous treatment of intracellular diffusion and we revise some of the model parameter values in light of the experimental evidence now available. We derive a critical contraction parameter which links the chemical population dynamics of membrane-bound FtsZ molecules to the force of contraction. Using this parameter as a tool to predict the ability of the cell to initiate division, we are able to predict the division outcome in cells depleted of key FtsZ-binding proteins
Valacyclovir in the treatment of acute retinal necrosis
Background: To report the outcome of oral valacyclovir as the sole antiviral therapy for patients with acute retinal
necrosis (ARN).
Methods: This study reports a retrospective, interventional case series of nine consecutive patients with ten eyes with
newly diagnosed ARN treated with oral valacyclovir as the sole antiviral agent. Eight patients received oral valacyclovir 2 g
tid (Valtrex, GlaxoSmithKline) and one patient with impaired renal function received oral 1 g tid. The main outcome
measures were response to treatment, time to initial response to treatment, time to complete resolution of retinitis, best
corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at final follow-up, retinal detachment and development of recurrent or second eye disease.
Results: Retinitis resolved in ten of ten (100%) affected eyes. The median time to initial detectable response was seven
days and the median time to complete resolution was 21 days. A final BCVA of 20/40 or better was achieved in 6/10
(60%) of eyes. 3/10 eyes (30%) developed a retinal detachment. No patients developed either disease reactivation or
second eye involvement over the course of the study (mean follow up 31 weeks, range 7 to 104 weeks).
Conclusions: Treatment with oral valacyclovir as the sole antiviral therapy resulted in complete resolution of retinitis.

Clinical recommendations to address dermatologic healthcare disparities in sexual and gender minority patients: a review
Background: In the United States, an estimated 4.5% of the population identifies as a sexual or gender minority (SGM). Efforts are underway to address this population's healthcare disparities. [A1] Objective: This review aims to highlight dermatologist's role in treating SGM patients, raise awareness about SGM-related stigma, and identify clinical interventions to improve SGM care. Methods: Articles were selected by review of literature from PubMed's database from 2000-2020. Results: The first intervention outlines methods to educate the healthcare team on the terminology used by the SGM community and how HIV epidemiology is a distinct topic through separate trainings. The second intervention emphasizes better communication with SGM patients in routine discussions, including the proper elicitation of a sexual history by avoiding heteronormative questioning. The last intervention discusses enhancing this population's clinical experience by updating clinical intake forms to include a fill-in-the-blank for patients' pronouns, refraining from gender-specific bathrooms, and advertising commitment to SGM care online. Conclusion: Our review article highlights a dermatologist's integral role in SGM care. The review emphasizes three distinct intervention areas that aim to destigmatize sexual/gender identity in the workplace, promote cultural humility, and improve the therapeutic alliance between SGM patients with dermatologists
