    The Millennium Galaxy Catalogue: morphological classification and bimodality in the colour-concentration plane

    Using 10 095 galaxies (B < 20 mag) from the Millennium Galaxy Catalogue, we derive B-band luminosity distributions and selected bivariate brightness distributions for the galaxy population. All subdivisions extract highly correlated sub-sets of the galaxy population which consistently point towards two overlapping distributions. A clear bimodality in the observed distribution is seen in both the rest-(u-r) colour and log(n) distributions. The rest-(u-r) colour bimodality becomes more pronounced when using the core colour as opposed to global colour. The two populations are extremely well separated in the colour-log(n) plane. Using our sample of 3 314 (B < 19 mag) eyeball classified galaxies, we show that the bulge-dominated, early-type galaxies populate one peak and the bulge-less, late-type galaxies occupy the second. The early- and mid-type spirals sprawl across and between the peaks. This constitutes extremely strong evidence that the fundamental way to divide the luminous galaxy population is into bulges and discs and that the galaxy bimodality reflects the two component nature of galaxies and not two distinct galaxy classes. We argue that these two-components require two independent formation mechanisms/processes and advocate early bulge formation through initial collapse and ongoing disc formation through splashback, infall and merging/accretion. We calculate the B-band luminosity-densities and stellar-mass densities within each subdivision and estimate that the z ~ 0 stellar mass content in spheroids, bulges and discs is 35 +/- 2 per cent, 18 +/- 7 and 47 +/- 7 per cent respectively. Applied Physiology Laboratory, University of North Texas, Denton, TX During exhaustive severe intensity exercise, the oxygen uptake (VO2) increases exponentially, with a time constant of ~30 s. After ~1 to 2 min, a slow component emerges and drives the VO2 to its maximum. There are clear differences in the VO2 response profile across exercise intensity domains. These disparities might not be attributable to metabolic demand but, rather, to characteristics of the various intensity domains, such as the consequences of lactic acid production. PURPOSE: To investigate the role of exercise intensity on the VO2 response profile at intensities wholly within the severe domain. METHODS: Four women (mean ± SD: age 22 ± 2 years, height 167 ± 7 cm, mass 66 ± 5 kg) and eight men (age 23 ± 2 yr, height 179 ± 9 cm, mass 78 ± 10 kg) performed exhaustive constant-power cycle ergometer tests at two different severe intensity work rates (263 ± 78 W and 214 ± 64 W). Smoothed breath-by-breath VO2 data were fitted to a two-component (primary response and slow component) model using iterative regression. RESULTS: Times to exhaustion were 217 ± 27 s and 590 ± 82 s, respectively. The VO2max values were the same at the two different work rates (2973 ± 691 ml·min-1 and 3011 ± 728 ml·min-1). The amplitude of the primary response was greater (p \u3c 0.05) at the higher work rate (2095 ± 716 ml·min-1) than at the lower work rate (1857 ± 618 ml·min-1) and the amplitude of the slow component was smaller (367 ± 177 ml·min-1 vs 645 ± 347 ml·min-1). In addition, the time delay before the emergence of the slow component was shorter at the higher work rate (92 ± 22 s vs 116 ± 42 s). CONCLUSION: The results show that exercise intensity per se affects the VO2 response profile within the severe intensity domain and suggest that metabolic demand drives the primary response of VO2 kinetics within this domain.     GAMA: towards a physical understanding of galaxy formation

    The Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) project is the latest in a tradition of large galaxy redshift surveys, and is now underway on the 3.9m Anglo-Australian Telescope at Siding Spring Observatory. GAMA is designed to map extragalactic structures on scales of 1kpc - 1Mpc in complete detail to a redshift of z~0.2, and to trace the distribution of luminous galaxies out to z~0.5. The principal science aim is to test the standard hierarchical structure formation paradigm of Cold Dark Matter (CDM) on scales of galaxy groups, pairs, discs, bulges and bars. We will measure (1) the Dark Matter Halo Mass Function (as inferred from galaxy group velocity dispersions); (2) baryonic processes, such as star formation and galaxy formation efficiency (as derived from Galaxy Stellar Mass Functions); and (3) the evolution of galaxy merger rates (via galaxy close pairs and galaxy asymmetries). Additionally, GAMA will form the central part of a new galaxy database, which aims to contain 275,000 galaxies with multi-wavelength coverage from coordinated observations with the latest international ground- and space-based facilities: GALEX, VST, VISTA, WISE, HERSCHEL, GMRT and ASKAP. Together, these data will provide increased depth (over 2 magnitudes), doubled spatial resolution (0.7"), and significantly extended wavelength coverage (UV through Far-IR to radio) over the main SDSS spectroscopic survey for five regions, each of around 50 deg^2.     Low-lying excited states of 122Xe have been studied via the β+/EC decay of 122Cs with the 8π γ-ray spectrometer at the TRIUMF Isotope Separator and Accelerator facility. The data collected have enabled the observation of new in-band transitions in the excited 0+ state bands. In addition, the 2+ members of the second 0+ and third 0+ state bands have been firmly confirmed by angular correlation analysis

    Selenium nanoparticles trigger alterations in ovarian cancer cell biomechanics

    High dose selenium acts as a cytotoxic agent, with potential applications in cancer treatment. However, clinical trials have failed to show any chemotherapeutic value of selenium at safe and tolerated doses (<90 μg/day). To enable the successful exploitation of selenium for cancer treatment, we evaluated inorganic selenium nanoparticles (SeNP), and found them effective in inhibiting ovarian cancer cell growth. In both SKOV-3 and OVCAR-3 ovarian cancer cell types SeNP treatment resulted in significant cytotoxicity. The two cell types displayed contrasting nanomechanical responses to SeNPs, with decreased surface roughness and membrane stiffness, characteristics of OVCAR-3 cell death. In SKOV-3, cell membrane surface roughness and stiffness increased, both properties associated with decreased metastatic potential. The beneficial effects of SeNPs on ovarian cancer cell death appear cell type dependent, and due to their low in vivo toxicity offer an exciting opportunity for future cancer treatment

    Galaxy and Mass Assembly: FUV, NUV, ugrizYJHK Petrosian, Kron and Sérsic photometry

    In order to generate credible 0.1-2 μm spectral energy distributions, the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) project requires many gigabytes of imaging data from a number of instruments to be reprocessed into a standard format. In this paper, we discuss the software infrastructure we use, and create self-consistent ugrizYJHK photometry for all sources within the GAMA sample. Using UKIDSS and SDSS archive data, we outline the pre-processing necessary to standardize all images to a common zero-point, the steps taken to correct for the seeing bias across the data set and the creation of gigapixel-scale mosaics of the three 4 × 12 deg2 GAMA regions in each filter. From these mosaics, we extract source catalogues for the GAMA regions using elliptical Kron and Petrosian matched apertures. We also calculate Sérsic magnitudes for all galaxies within the GAMA sample using sigma, a galaxy component modelling wrapper for galfit 3. We compare the resultant photometry directly and also calculate the r-band galaxy luminosity function for all photometric data sets to highlight the uncertainty introduced by the photometric method. We find that (1) changing the object detection threshold has a minor effect on the best-fitting Schechter parameters of the overall population (M*± 0.055 mag, α± 0.014, ϕ*± 0.0005 h3 Mpc−3); (2) there is an offset between data sets that use Kron or Petrosian photometry, regardless of the filter; (3) the decision to use circular or elliptical apertures causes an offset in M* of 0.20 mag; (4) the best-fitting Schechter parameters from total-magnitude photometric systems (such as SDSS modelmag or Sérsic magnitudes) have a steeper faint-end slope than photometric systems based upon Kron or Petrosian measurements; and (5) our Universe's total luminosity density, when calculated using Kron or Petrosian r-band photometry, is underestimated by at least 15 per cen

    Normal X-inactivation mosaicism in corneas of heterozygous FlnaDilp2/+ female mice--a model of human Filamin A (FLNA) diseases

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Some abnormalities of mouse corneal epithelial maintenance can be identified by the atypical mosaic patterns they produce in X-chromosome inactivation mosaics and chimeras. Human <it>FLNA</it>/+ females, heterozygous for X-linked, filamin A gene (<it>FLNA</it>) mutations, display a range of disorders and X-inactivation mosaicism is sometimes quantitatively unbalanced. <it>Flna</it><sup><it>Dilp2/+ </it></sup>mice, heterozygous for an X-linked filamin A (<it>Flna</it>) nonsense mutation have variable eye, skeletal and other abnormalities, but X-inactivation mosaicism has not been investigated. The aim of this study was to determine whether X-inactivation mosaicism in the corneal epithelia of <it>Flna</it><sup><it>Dilp2/+ </it></sup>mice was affected in any way that might predict abnormal corneal epithelial maintenance.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>X-chromosome inactivation mosaicism was studied in the corneal epithelium and a control tissue (liver) of <it>Flna</it><sup><it>Dilp2/+ </it></sup>and wild-type (WT) female X-inactivation mosaics, hemizygous for the X-linked, <it>LacZ </it>reporter H253 transgene, using β-galactosidase histochemical staining. The corneal epithelia of <it>Flna</it><sup><it>Dilp2/+ </it></sup>and WT X-inactivation mosaics showed similar radial, striped patterns, implying epithelial cell movement was not disrupted in <it>Flna</it><sup><it>Dilp2/+ </it></sup>corneas. Corrected stripe numbers declined with age overall (but not significantly for either genotype individually), consistent with previous reports suggesting an age-related reduction in stem cell function. Corrected stripe numbers were not reduced in <it>Flna</it><sup><it>Dilp2/+ </it></sup>compared with WT X-inactivation mosaics and mosaicism was not significantly more unbalanced in the corneal epithelia or livers of <it>Flna</it><sup><it>Dilp2/+ </it></sup>than wild-type <it>Flna<sup>+/+ </sup></it>X-inactivation mosaics.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Mosaic analysis identified no major effect of the mouse <it>Flna<sup>Dilp2 </sup></it>mutation on corneal epithelial maintenance or the balance of X-inactivation mosaicism in the corneal epithelium or liver.</p
