This method of error control is simple and provides high system reliability. If a properly chosen code is used for error detection, virtually error-free data transmission can be attained. Cut-off rate calculations for the outer channel in a concatenated cooling system
Concatenated codes were long used as a practical means of achieving long block or constraint lengths for combating errors on very noisy channels. The inner and outer encoders are normally separated by an interleaver, so that decoded error bursts coming from the inner decoder are randomized before entering the outer decoder. The effectiveness of this interleaver is examined by calculating the cut-off rate of the outer channel seen by the outer decoder with and without interleaving. Interleaving never hurts the performance of a concatenated code, and when the inner code rate is near the cut-off rate of the inner channel, interleaving significantly improves code performance

Absolute photoionization cross section measurements of the Kr I-isoelectronic sequence
Photoionization spectra have been recorded in the 4s, 4p and 3d resonance regions for the Kr Iisoelectronic sequence using both the dual laser produced plasma technique (at DCU) to produce photoabsorption spectra, and the merged ion beam and synchrotron radiation technique (at ASTRID) to measure absolute photoionization cross sections. Profile parameters are compared for the 4s − np resonances of Rb+ and Sr2+. Many new 4p " ns, md transitions are identified with the aid of Hartree-Fock calculations, and consistent quantum defects are observed for the various ns and md Rydberg series. Absolute single and double photoionization cross sections recorded in the 3d region for Rb+ and Sr2+ ions show preferential decay via double photoionization. This is only the second report where both the DLP technique and the merged beam technique have been used simultaneously to record photoionization spectra, and the advantages of both techniques (i.e. better resolution in the case of DLP and values for absolute photoionization cross sections in the case of the merged beam technique) are highlighted
Topological Defects in Twisted Bundles of Two-Dimensionally Ordered Filaments
Twisted assemblies of filaments in ropes, cables and bundles are essential
structural elements in wide use in macroscopic materials as well as within the
cells and tissues of living organisms. We develop the unique, non-linear
elastic properties of twisted filament bundles that derive from generic
properties of two-dimensional line-ordered materials. Continuum elasticity
reveals a formal equivalence between the elastic stresses induced by bundle
twist and those induced by the positive curvature in thin, elastic sheets.
These geometrically-induced stresses can be screened by 5-fold disclination
defects in lattice packing, and we predict a discrete spectrum elastic energy
groundstates associated with integer numbers of disclinations in cylindrical
bundles. Finally, we show that elastic-energy groundstates are extremely
sensitive to defect position in the cross-section, with off-center
disclinations driving the entire bundle to buckle, adopting globally writhing

Complementary Replicas of Ultra-Rapidly Frozen Specimens
Complementary freeze-fracture replicas have been prepared of ultra-rapidly cooled specimens in the absence of chemical pretreatments. The grid-sized replicas were stabilized by open mesh gold grids during the cleaning process and, after cleaning, were supported on thin Formvar films. The complementary replicas were valuable for describing artifacts, for interpreting the nature of fracture planes and for evaluating the resolution of replicas. Complementary images demonstrated that heat emitted from resistance electrodes or electron guns during evaporation can seriously distort fracture surfaces even for samples held at -150°C. Complementary images of crystalline membranous cytochrome c oxidase helped establish that fracturing reveals hydrophilic surfaces. Complementary images of proteoliposomes showed that intramembrane particles produced by an integral 140kdal protein generated complementary pits whereas intramembrane particles produced by a smaller integral 46.5kdal protein did not. The inability to observe the small pits is in part a limitation of the resolution of conventionally prepared platinum/carbon replicas
Multicenter Validation of the Vasoactive-Ventilation-Renal Score as a Predictor of Prolonged Mechanical Ventilation After Neonatal Cardiac Surgery
Objectives: We sought to validate the Vasoactive-Ventilation-Renal score, a novel disease severity index, as a predictor of outcome in a multicenter cohort of neonates who underwent cardiac surgery.
Design: Retrospective chart review.
Setting: Seven tertiary-care referral centers.
Patients: Neonates defined as age less than or equal to 30 days at the time of cardiac surgery.
Interventions: Ventilation index, Vasoactive-Inotrope Score, serum lactate, and Vasoactive-Ventilation-Renal score were recorded for three postoperative time points: ICU admission, 6 hours, and 12 hours. Peak values, defined as the highest of the three measurements, were also noted. Vasoactive-Ventilation-Renal was calculated as follows: ventilation index + Vasoactive-Inotrope Score + Δ creatinine (change in creatinine from baseline × 10). Primary outcome was prolonged duration of mechanical ventilation, defined as greater than 96 hours. Receiver operative characteristic curves were generated, and abilities of variables to correctly classify prolonged duration of mechanical ventilation were compared using area under the curve values. Multivariable logistic regression modeling was also performed.
Measurements and Main Results: We reviewed 275 neonates. Median age at surgery was 7 days (25th–75th percentile, 5–12 d), 86 (31%) had single ventricle anatomy, and 183 (67%) were classified as Society of Thoracic Surgeons-European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery Congenital Heart Surgery Mortality Category 4 or 5. Prolonged duration of mechanical ventilation occurred in 89 patients (32%). At each postoperative time point, the area under the curve for prolonged duration of mechanical ventilation was significantly greater for the Vasoactive-Ventilation-Renal score as compared to the ventilation index, Vasoactive-Inotrope Score, and serum lactate, with an area under the curve for peak Vasoactive-Ventilation-Renal score of 0.82 (95% CI, 0.77–0.88). On multivariable analysis, peak Vasoactive-Ventilation-Renal score was independently associated with prolonged duration of mechanical ventilation, odds ratio (per 1 unit increase): 1.08 (95% CI, 1.04–1.12).
Conclusions: In this multicenter cohort of neonates who underwent cardiac surgery, the Vasoactive-Ventilation-Renal score was a reliable predictor of postoperative outcome and outperformed more traditional measures of disease complexity and severity
Semigroup analysis of structured parasite populations
Motivated by structured parasite populations in aquaculture we consider a
class of size-structured population models, where individuals may be recruited
into the population with distributed states at birth. The mathematical model
which describes the evolution of such a population is a first-order nonlinear
partial integro-differential equation of hyperbolic type. First, we use
positive perturbation arguments and utilise results from the spectral theory of
semigroups to establish conditions for the existence of a positive equilibrium
solution of our model. Then, we formulate conditions that guarantee that the
linearised system is governed by a positive quasicontraction semigroup on the
biologically relevant state space. We also show that the governing linear
semigroup is eventually compact, hence growth properties of the semigroup are
determined by the spectrum of its generator. In the case of a separable
fertility function, we deduce a characteristic equation, and investigate the
stability of equilibrium solutions in the general case using positive

A vision for global monitoring of biological invasions
Managing biological invasions relies on good global coverage of species distributions. Accurate information on alien species distributions, obtained from international policy and cross-border co-operation, is required to evaluate trans-boundary and trading partnership risks. However, a standardized approach for systematically monitoring alien species and tracking biological invasions is still lacking. This Perspective presents a vision for global observation and monitoring of biological invasions. We show how the architecture for tracking biological invasions is provided by a minimum information set of Essential Variables, global collaboration on data sharing and infrastructure, and strategic contributions by countries. We show how this novel, synthetic approach to an observation system for alien species provides a tangible and attainable solution to delivering the information needed to slow the rate of new incursions and reduce the impacts of invaders. We identify three Essential Variables for Invasion Monitoring; alien species occurrence, species alien status and alien species impact. We outline how delivery of this minimum information set by joint, complementary contributions from countries and global community initiatives is possible. Country contributions are made feasible using a modular approach where all countries are able to participate and strategically build their contributions to a global information set over time. The vision we outline will deliver wide-ranging benefits to countries and international efforts to slow the rate of biological invasions and minimize their environmental impacts. These benefits will accrue over time as global coverage and information on alien species increases
