How deep is your emotion? Emojis facial expressions on the emotional processing of text messages
Despite emojis are already an integral part of human communication, little is known about how their use may affect the emotional processing of the text messages sent in platforms such as WhatsApp or Twitter. Here, we aimed to analyze how the brief presentation (34 ms) of emojis congruent with the emotional content of sentences designed to represent the five basic emotions, and neutral situations, relative to their verbal equivalents or the absence of any stimulus as control, affects the processing of the emotional content of these sentences using an affective appraisal task combined with the masked priming paradigm. Results showed that, although the use of emojis did not appear to affect the level of arousal elicited by the sentences, they did impact the speed with which these responses were made, though only in sentences associated with the emotions of sadness and disgust. Specifically, in these sentences, the prior presentation of the emoji produced longer responses when compared to the control stimulus. These results suggest that the use of emojis does not seem to offer advantages in the emotional processing of written messages, at least at early stages of processing.
The present internship report, developed in the curricular unit of Supervised Educational Practice, inserted in the Master's Degree in Pre-School Education and Teaching of the 1st Cycle of Basic Education, aims to reflect the process of development and learning, through a critical and reflexive posture.
Thus, it is organized in three chapters that articulate each other, in order to be possible to understand the activities that were proposed to the groups of Pre-School Education and the 1st Cycle of Basic Education.
Therefore, it presents the theoretical and legal framework learned and deepened during the first cycle of studies, as well as in the course of the mentioned master's degree. The conceptual framework is related to the dual profile of teaching, both general and specific, showing the similarities and contrasts between them.
Considering the first chapter, it is evident a characterization and analysis of the educational environment of the institution, as well as the dynamics of Pre-School Education and the 1st Cycle of Basic Education. In this sense, and because the environment is crucial for the holistic development of children, it also refers to the space organization, time and materials in both above mentioned groups.
Later, based on children’s specificities, some of the activities carried out in both groups and its impact on them and on their development will be described and analyzed.
In short, it will be possible to understand that the activities were developed taking into account the holistic and socio-constructivist perspective of education, where children are the center of the teaching and learning process
Lexico-syntactic interactions in the resolution of relative clause ambiguities in a second language (L2): The role of cognate status and L2 proficiency
There is extensive evidence showing that bilinguals activate lexical representations in a non-selective way both when words are presented in isolation and in sentence contexts. Recent research has shown the existence of cross-language activation at the syntactic level as well. However, the extent to which the lexical and syntactic levels of representation interact during second language (L2) sentence processing, and how these interactions are modulated by L2 proficiency remain unclear. In this paper, we explore how native speakers of European-Portuguese (L1) who are learning English as an L2 at different levels of proficiency (intermediate vs. advanced) resolve relative clause (RC) syntactic ambiguities in their L2. European Portuguese and English native speakers were used as controls. Participants were asked to perform a sentence completion task, with cognates and noncognates critically embedded in the complex noun phrase (NP) preceding the RC, and which contained its antecedent. Results revealed that L2 learners, like English controls, preferred to attach the RC to the last host of the complex NP, regardless of L2 proficiency. Importantly, the cognate status of the complex NP modulated the results, although, contrary to our expectation, the presence of cognates induced less L1 syntax interference compared to noncognates. This study was conducted at Psychology Research Centre (PSI/01662), University of Minho, and supported by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology and the Portuguese Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education through national funds, and co-financed by FEDER through COMPETE2020 under the PT2020 Partnership Agreement (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-007653).
Physical activity level and food intake habits of university students from 3 to 5 semester in the health area
Objective: The aim of this work is to assess the physical activity level and nutrition habits of university students from the
health area, as they will be future disseminators of such information to the community.
Methods: This was a cross-sectional study with 281 students from the health area from the Universidade de Brasília.
Anthropometric variables were evaluated, as well as food habits and physical activity level.
Results: A high level of inactivity was observed among the students, except for those of Physical Education who
perform physical activities in their school. Low physical activity level was observed among students of low
socioeconomic level. Nutrition was considered inadequate for the majority of the students (79.7%). The
lowest levels regarding an adequate nutrition were observed for the group of milk derivatives (23.0%), fruits
and vegetables (24.9%) and complex carbohydrates (25.9%). A high percentage of inadequate consumption
of soft drinks and sweets (74.0%) was observed. The regression analysis indicated that the gender variable was
significantly associated with body mass index, where men presented a higher body mass index than women
(p<0,001).
Conclusion: Although the sample was formed by health field students, who, at first, have a better knowledge of healthy
lifestyle practices, a high level of inactivity and inadequate eating habits was observed among them. It is
necessary to rethink the relationship between theoretical knowledge and real changes in lifestyle in order to
promote health
Metabolite composition of chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) upon cooking: Proximate analysis, fibre, organic acids and phenolics
The aim of this research was to study the processing effects (roasting and boiling) on primary and secondary
metabolite composition of fruits from the following chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) cultivars
(cvs.) of three Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) areas in the Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro region
(Portugal): PDO Terra Fria (cvs. Aveleira, Boaventura, Côta, Lamela and Trigueira), PDO Padrela (cvs. Judia,
Lada, Longal and Negra) and PDO Soutos da Lapa (cvs. Longal and Martaínha). The cooking processes significantly
(p < 0.0001) affected primary and secondary metabolite composition of the chestnuts. Roasted
chestnuts had higher protein contents, insoluble and total dietary fibre and lower fat contents whilst
boiled chestnuts had lower protein, but higher fat contents. Cooking increased citric acid contents, especially
in roasted chestnuts. On the other hand, raw chestnuts had higher malic acid contents than cooked
chestnuts. Moreover, roasted chestnuts had significantly higher gallic acid and total phenolics contents,
and boiled chestnuts had higher gallic and ellagic acids contents, when compared to raw chestnuts. The
present data confirms that cooked chestnuts are a good source of organic acids and phenolics and have
low fat contents, properties that are associated with positive health benefits
Prickly pear (Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill.): comparative analysis of biological activity of pulp and peel
A quantidade
A procura
Health concerns and the benefits that food can bring to consumers is a reality
nowadays. The number of tonnes of by-products produced and wasted by
the food industry is one of the major challenges that the European Union is
facing. The continued search for foods that contain compounds potentially
beneficial to health, and the study of these foods and their by-products, can
be one of the solutions for these two major concerns of today's society. In
this work, a comparative analysis was performed between the pulp and the
peel (by-product) of Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill., determining its antioxidant
potential, phenolic compounds content and total flavonoids. In 2017, samples
of O. ficus-indica (L.) Mill. were obtained from the Herdade de Peliteiros
(Silveiras, Montemor-o-Novo, Évora). With the obtained results, it was verified
that the by-product presented better results for all the methods used,
except for the reducing power. Therefore, the inclusion of this fruit in a context
of a balanced food plan may contribute to potential health benefits for
consumers. In addition, it shows great potential for the application of its byproduct
in the development of new food products or in food enrichment.

Optical density and chemical composition of microfilled and microhybrid composite resins
This study evaluated the optical density of two microfilled and two microhybrid resins, as well as the composition of these materials with regard to their optical density. Cavities prepared in 12 2-mm- or 4-mm-thick acrylic plastic plates were filled with Z250 (3M-ESPE), A110 (3M-ESPE), Charisma (Heraeus-Kulzer) and DurafillVS (Heraeus-Kulzer). The resin increments (2-mm-thick) were light-cured for 40 s. Three 0.12-s radiographic exposures were made of each #2 acrylic plastic plate. DenOptix system optical plates were used to obtain the digital images. Three readings of the composite resin surface were made in each radiograph, totalizing 216 readings. The mean of highest and lowest grey-scale values was obtained. Two specimens of each composite resin were prepared for SEM analysis of the chemical elements related to optical density, using energy dispersive x-ray analysis (EDX). The results were subjected to Shapiro-Wilk's test, ANOVA, Tukey's test at 1% level of significance and Pearson's correlation. The mean grey-scale values at 2 mm and 4 mm were: Z250 = 154.27a and 185.33w; A110 = 46.77b and 63.05y; Charisma = 163.40c and 200.46z; DurafillVS = 43.92b and 58.99x, respectively. Pearson's test did not show any positive correlation between optical density and percentage weight of optical density chemical elements. It was concluded that the microhybrid resins had higher optical density means than the microfilled resins; among the evaluated resins, Charisma had the highest optical density means
Revisiting thyroid hormones in schizophrenia
Thyroid hormones are crucial during development and in the adult brain. Of interest, fluctuations in the levels of thyroid hormones at various times during development and throughout life can impact on psychiatric disease manifestation and response to treatment.
Here we review research on thyroid function assessment in schizophrenia, relating interrelations between the pituitary-thyroid axis and major neurosignaling systems involved in schizophrenia’s pathophysiology. These include the serotonergic, dopaminergic, glutamatergic, and GABAergic networks, as well as myelination and inflammatory processes. The available evidence supports that thyroid hormones deregulation is a common feature in schizophrenia and that the implications of thyroid hormones homeostasis in the fine-tuning of crucial brain networks warrants further research. The present work was supported by Grant POCI/SAUESP/58757/2004 from the Portuguese Science Foundation (FCT/FEDER).
