Of Fears and Budgets: Strategies of Control in Vespa velutina Invasion and Lessons for Best Management Practices
[Abstrat] Implementing management practices for the control of invasive species can be a complex task with multiple dimensions, where the identification of stakeholders and drivers of those practices is of paramount importance. The invasive hornet Vespa velutina has spread across Europe and Asia from its native range in SE Asia in recent years. A common control method is the removal and destruction of its nests on citizensâ request to call centers. In this paper we have explored the knowledge and main factors that influence the perceptions of the citizens on the species in an invaded municipality in NW Spain, as well as the management practices of the municipal emergency unit responsible for nest removal activities. Our analysis brings out multiple drivers of management practices that derive both from the citizensâ and practitionersâ knowledge, and highlights several points of conflict between both stakeholder groups connected to (1) the degree of service provided to the local population, (2) the risk of allergic reactions as a motive to urge removals, or (3) the quality of information provided by mass media. Our results support the crucial importance of environmental education programs that seek to increase the knowledge of the general public about the threats of invasive species. Such programs might be incorporated to implement and optimize management plans of V. velutina by enhancing communication between experts and local population
Uranyl complexes formed with apara-t-butylcalix[4]arene bearing phosphinoyl pendant arms on the lower rim. Solid and solution studies
The current interest in functionalized calixarenes with phosphorylated pendant arms resides in their coordination ability towards f elements and capability towards actinide/rare earth separation. Uranyl cation forms 1:1 and 1:2 (M:L) complexes with atetra-phosphinoylated p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene, B4bL4: UO2(NO3)2(B4bL4)n· xH2O (n = 1, x = 2, 1; n = 2, x = 6, 2). Spectroscopic data point to the inner coordination sphere of 1 containing one monodentate nitrate anion, one water molecule and the four phosphinoylated arms bound to UO22+ while in 2, uranyl is only coordinated to calixarene ligands. In both cases the U(VI) ion is 8-coordinate. Uranyl complexes display enhanced metal-centred luminescence due to energy transfer from the calixarene ligands; the luminescence decays are bi-exponential with associated lifetimes in the ranges 220ÎŒs <Ïs <250ÎŒs and 630ÎŒs <ÏL < 640ÎŒs, pointing to the presence of two species with differently coordinated calixarene, as substantiated by aXPS study of U(4f5/2,7/2), O(1s) and P(2p) levels on solid state samples. The extraction study of UO22+ cation and trivalent rare-earth (Y, La, Eu) ions from acidic nitrate media by B4bL4 in chloroform shows the uranyl cation being much more extracted than rare earth
This writing is focused on analyzing the different contents of the Diploma from where the psychosocial facts are approached through the narrative approach, based on the stories of victims of the armed confrontation at the national level and where different psychosocial coping tools are proposed to the suffering of individually and collectively.
The case of "Camilo" is presented in which recognizing the psychosocial effects caused by violence from different perspectives we can know the psychosocial impacts, the voices of survivor or victim, the predominant images of violence and the naturalized impacts and along with this the positioning Camilo's resilient model, as well as the different types of questions in order to contribute to psychosocial support.
On the other hand, we can delve into the approach of the "Peñas Coloradas" where through the analysis the psychosocial emergents of this community were known, as well as the impacts of the community for being stigmatized, and the support actions that can be carried out in the community. In the same way, psychosocial strategies are developed to achieve transformation, facilitating the enhancement of their abilities to produce a positive future.
The narrative allows us to know the victimizing facts due to violence, determining the political, environmental and social factors that affect the Colombian armed conflict, likewise it is possible to recognize the transformations and effects through psychosocial accompaniment
Rickettsia felis is the etiologic agent of flea-borne spotted fever, with Ctenocephalides felis as its main vector and reservoir. Typically, the disease presents as acute fever associated with headache, asthenia, generalized maculo-papular rash, and in some cases, an inoculation eschar. In recent years, R. felis has acquired an important role in the etiology of the acute febrile syndrome; it is indeed an emerging infectious disease, albeit underdiagnosed. Indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) is currently the reference diagnostic method. However, this technique has limitations related to the cross reactivity among different species of rickettsiae. Herein, we describe a case of a 16 year-old patient with an acute febrile syndrome secondary to probable infection with R. felis. doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.7705/biomedica.v33i0.723Rickettsia felis es el agente etiolĂłgico de la fiebre manchada transmitida por pulgas, cuyo principal vector y reservorio es Ctenocephalides felis.

Caribbean-Wide, Long-Term Study of Seagrass Beds Reveals Local Variations, Shifts in Community Structure and Occasional Collapse
The CARICOMP monitoring network gathered standardized data from 52 seagrass sampling stations at 22 sites (mostly Thalassia testudinum-dominated beds in reef systems) across the Wider Caribbean twice a year over the period 1993 to 2007 (and in some cases up to 2012). Wide variations in community total biomass (285 to >2000 g dry mâ2) and annual foliar productivity of the dominant seagrass T. testudinum (2000 g dry mâ2) were found among sites. Solar-cycle related intra-annual variations in T. testudinum leaf productivity were detected at latitudes > 16°N. Hurricanes had little to no long-term effects on these well-developed seagrass communities, except for 1 station, where the vegetation was lost by burial below âŒ1 m sand. At two sites (5 stations), the seagrass beds collapsed due to excessive grazing by turtles or sea-urchins (the latter in combination with human impact and storms). The low-cost methods of this regional-scale monitoring program were sufficient to detect long-term shifts in the communities, and fifteen (43%) out of 35 long-term monitoring stations (at 17 sites) showed trends in seagrass communities consistent with expected changes under environmental deterioration.UCR::VicerrectorĂa de InvestigaciĂłn::Unidades de InvestigaciĂłn::Ciencias BĂĄsicas::Centro de InvestigaciĂłn en Ciencias del Mar y LimnologĂa (CIMAR
