Stochastic amplification of fluctuations in cortical up-states

    Get PDF
Supporting Information: Appendix S1-S7Cortical neurons are bistable; as a consequence their local field potentials can fluctuate between quiescent and active states, generating slow 0.5-2 Hz oscillations which are widely known as transitions between Up and Down States. Despite a large number of studies on Up-Down transitions, deciphering its nature, mechanisms and function are still today challenging tasks. In this paper we focus on recent experimental evidence, showing that a class of spontaneous oscillations can emerge within the Up states. In particular, a non-trivial peak around 20 Hz appears in their associated power-spectra, what produces an enhancement of the activity power for higher frequencies (in the 30-90 Hz band). Moreover, this rhythm within Ups seems to be an emergent or collective phenomenon given that individual neurons do not lock to it as they remain mostly unsynchronized. Remarkably, similar oscillations (and the concomitant peak in the spectrum) do not appear in the Down states. Here we shed light on these findings by using different computational models for the dynamics of cortical networks in presence of different levels of physiological complexity. Our conclusion, supported by both theory and simulations, is that the collective phenomenon of >stochastic amplification of fluctuations> - previously described in other contexts such as Ecology and Epidemiology - explains in an elegant and parsimonious manner, beyond model-dependent details, this extra-rhythm emerging only in the Up states but not in the Downs. © 2012 Hidalgo et al.Funding provided by Spanish MICINN-FEDER under project FIS2009-08451 and Junta de Andalucia Proyecto de Excelencia P09FQM-4682. Some applications of quasi-velocities in optimal control

In this paper we study optimal control problems for nonholonomic systems defined on Lie algebroids by using quasi-velocities. We consider both kinematic, i.e. systems whose cost functional depends only on position and velocities, and dynamic optimal control problems, i.e. systems whose cost functional depends also on accelerations. The formulation of the problem directly at the level of Lie algebroids turns out to be the correct framework to explain in detail similar results appeared recently (Maruskin and Bloch, 2007). We also provide several examples to illustrate our construction.Comment: Revtex 4.1, 20 pages. To appear in Int. J. Geom. Meth. Modern Physic

Influencia de cinco técnicas enológicas en parámetros relacionados con la acidez y el color en vinos tintos de Mencía

    Get PDF

Precision and practical usefulness of intraoral scanners in implant dentistry : a systematic literature review

    Get PDF
This systematic review aimed to evaluate the efficiency and accuracy of digital impression techniques for implant-supported restorations, and to assess their economic feasibility. Two independent electronic database searches were conducted in the Pubmed/MedLine, Cochrane Library, and Lilacs databases complimented by a manual search, selecting relevant clinical and in vitro studies published between 1st January 2009 and 28st February 2019. All type of studies (in vivo and in vitro) were included in this systematic review. Twenty-seven studies (8 in vivo and 19 in vitro studies) fulfilled the inclusion criteria. No meta-analysis was performed due to a large heterogeneity of the study protocols. The passive fit of superstructures on dental implants presented similar results between digital and conventional impression techniques. The studies considered that several factors influence the accuracy of implant impression taking: distance and angulation between implants, depth of placement, type of scanner, scanning strategy, characteristics of scanbody, and operator experience. Regarding the economic viability of intraoral scanning systems, only one study reported any benefit in comparison with conventional techniques. Digital impressions of dental implants can be considered a viable alternative in cases of one or two contiguous dental implants. However, more studies are needed to evaluate the accuracy of digital techniques in full-arch implant-supported restorations

Analysis and simulation of multiplexed single-bus networks with and without buffering

    Get PDF
Performance issues of a single-bus interconnection network for multiprocessor systems, operating in a multiplexed way, are presented in this paper. Several models are developed and used to allow system performance evaluation. Comparisons with equivalent crossbar systems are provided. It is shown how crossbar EBW values can be reached and exceeded when appropriate operation parameters are chosen in a multiplexed single-bus system. Another architectural feature is considered, concerning the utilization of buffers at the memory modules. With the buffering scheme, memory interference can be reduced so that the system performance is practically improved.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Overlapping communication and computation by using a hybrid MPI/SMPSs approach

    Get PDF
A previous version of this document was submitted for publication by october 2008.Communication overhead is one of the dominant factors that affect performance in high-performance computing systems. To reduce the negative impact of communication, programmers overlap communication and computation by using asynchronous communication primitives. This increases code complexity, requiring more effort to write parallel code and making less readable code. This paper presents the hybrid use of MPI and SMPSs (SMP superscalar), a task-based shared-memory programming model, enhanced with a restart mechanism allowing the programmer to introduce the asynchronism that is necessary to enable the effective communication/computation overlap in a productive way. We demonstrate the hybrid use of MPI/SMPSs with the high-performance LINPACK benchmark, which uses the lookahead technique to overlap communication and computation. MPI/SMPSs improves the performance of a pure MPI with look-ahead by 7,6% on a 1024 processors machine. In addition to better performance, hybrid MPI/SMPSs substantially reduces code complexity, it is less sensitive to network bandwidth and operating system noise, and improves the use of main memory.Postprint (published version
