    Athletic Disobedience: Providing a Context for Analysis of Colin Kaepernick’s Protest

    The interface between sport and political protest is not a new phenomenon. New iterations and new debates have arisen recently. Colin Kaepernick, backup quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, found a powerful and controversial form of political action when he decided to sit for the playing of the national anthem prior to a preseason game on August 26, 2016. Kaepernick did this to draw greater attention to police violence against black and brown people in the United States. The story gained traction in the media, spurring on a renewed discussion about the intersection between athletics, Americanism, protest, and race. This paper will provide an overview of the Kaepernick protest, analyzing it through historical, sociological, and philosophical lenses. The specifics of the protest will be presented, including important interpretations of the protest, in order to show the debates that frame the prevailing ideas about how athletes like Kaepernick should behave. Following the introduction of relevant interpretations of the protest, historical ties will be made to earlier protests that will better situate Kaepernick’s protest. After the protest is historically situated, a number of philosophic principles that scholars should consider when thinking about Kaepernick’s protest will be introduced. Ultimately, the goal of this paper is to offer an informative foundation from which other scholarly interpretations and arguments can be made and which other scholars can reference

    Predissociation in N2(C'4, 1 Sigma u +) and other N2 states and its importance in the atmospheres of Titan and Triton

    The objectives of this program are to further the understanding of the upper atmospheres of Titan, Triton, and the Earth in terms of the observed emissions of the 13-14 eV states of N2. These states are generated at quite high rates, yet very little emission is observed from them. The reasons are complex, involving resonance trapping and predissociation, and it is desired to quantify the effects of predissociation, particularly on the c(sub 4)' 1 Sigma(sub u),(sup +) state of N2. Earlier experiments had indicated that predissociation of the c(sub 4)' state was of little importance, yet over the last two years a growing body of evidence has shown that for levels above v = 2, predissociation is in fact a major process. It is the v = 0 level for which production by electron bombardment and photoexcitation is highest, and so it has been most important to evaluate the effects of predissociation on this particular level. The goal has been to target c(sub 4)' (v = 0) for a thorough analysis, in which both the extent of predissociation as a function of rotational level and the atomic product branching ratio, where the only possible products are N(4S) + N(4S) and N(2D) + N(4S), are determined. For the first year of funding, the intention was to demonstrate two-photon excitation of the intermediate N2(a(sup 1) Pi(sub g)) state, so that the gap to the 13 eV energy region could be bridged, and then use a second laser to reach the c(sub 4)' state itself

    CMB constraints on cosmic strings and superstrings

    We present the first complete MCMC analysis of cosmological models with evolving cosmic (super)string networks, using the Unconnected Segment Model in the unequal-time correlator formalism. For ordinary cosmic string networks, we derive joint constraints on ΛCDM and string network parameters, namely the string tension Gμ, the loop-chopping efficiency cr and the string wiggliness α. For cosmic superstrings, we obtain joint constraints on the fundamental string tension GμF, the string coupling gs, the self-interaction coefficient cs, and the volume of compact extra dimensions w. This constitutes the most comprehensive CMB analysis of ΛCDM cosmology + strings to date. For ordinary cosmic string networks our updated constraint on the string tension, obtained using Planck2015 temperature and polarisation data, is Gμ < 1.1 × 10^(−7) in relativistic units, while for cosmic superstrings our constraint on the fundamental string tension after marginalising over gs, cs and w is GμF < 2.8 × 10^(−8)

    The Effect of Exercise Intensity on Total PYY and GLP-1 in Healthy Females: A Pilot Study

    We compared the acute response of anorexigenic signals (total PYY and GLP-1) in response to submaximal and supramaximal exercise. Nine females completed three sessions: (1) moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT; 30 min; 65%  VO2max); (2) sprint interval training (SIT; 6 × 30 sec “all-out” cycling sprints with 4 min recovery); or (3) control (CTRL; no exercise). PYY and GLP-1 were measured via blood samples drawn before, immediately after, and 90 min after exercise. Perceptions of hunger were rated using a visual analogue scale at all blood sampling time points. There was a session × time interaction for GLP-1 (p=0.004) where SIT and MICT (p<0.015 and p<0.001) were higher compared to CTRL both immediately and 90 min after exercise. There was a main effect of time for PYY where 90 min after exercise it was decreased versus before and immediately after exercise. There was a session × time interaction for hunger with lower ratings following SIT versus MICT (p=0.027) and CTRL (p=0.031) 90 min after exercise. These results suggest that though GLP-1 is elevated after exercise in women, it is not affected by exercise intensity though hunger was lower 90 min after exercise with SIT. As the sample size is small further study is needed to confirm these findings

    The Cosmology of String Theoretic Axions

    String theory posesses numerous axion candidates. The recent realization that the compactification radius in string theory might be large means that these states can solve the strong CP problem. This still leaves the question of the cosmological bound on the axion mass. Here we explore two schemes for accommodating such light axions in cosmology. In the first, we note that in string theory the universe is likely to be dominated early on by the coherent oscillations of some moduli. The usual moduli problem assumes that these fields have masses comparable to the gravitino. We argue that string moduli are likely to be substantially more massive, eliminating this problem. In such cosmologies the axion bound is significantly weakened. Plausible mechanisms for generating the baryon number density are described. In the second, we point out that in string theory, the axion potentials might be much larger at early times than at present. In string theory, if CP violation is described by a small parameter, the axion may sit sufficiently close to its true minimum to invalidate the bounds.Comment: 24 pages, uses harvmac.     Understanding the Needs and Priorities of People Living with Persistent Pain and Long-Term Musculoskeletal Conditions during the COVID-19 Pandemic—A Public Involvement Project

    Background: Critiques of public involvement (PI) are associated with failing to be inclusive of under-represented groups, and this leads to research that fails to include a diversity of perspectives. Aim: The aim of this PI project was to understand the experiences and priorities of people from three seldom-heard groups whose musculoskeletal pain may have been exacerbated or treatment delayed due to COVID-19. Engaging representatives to report diverse experiences was important, given the goal of developing further research into personalised and integrated care and addressing population health concerns about access and self-management for people with musculoskeletal pain. Methods: The project was approved via Sheffield Hallam University Ethics but was exempt from further HRA approval. A literature review was conducted, followed by informal individual and group discussions involving professionals and people with lived experience of (a) fibromyalgia pain, (b) those waiting for elective surgery and (c) experts associated with the care home sector. Findings from the literature review were combined with the insights from the public involvement. Resulting narratives were developed to highlight the challenges associated with persistent pain and informed the creation of consensus statements on the priorities for service improvement and future research. The consensus statements were shared and refined with input from an expert steering group. Results: The narratives describe pain as a uniformly difficult experience to share with professionals; it is described as exhausting, frustrating and socially limiting. Pain leads to exclusion from routine daily activities and often resigns people to feeling and being unwell. In all cases, there are concerns about accessing and improving services and critical issues associated with optimising physical activity, functional wellbeing and managing polypharmacy. Exercise and/or mobilisation are important and commonly used self-management strategies, but opportunity and advice about safe methods are variable. Services should focus on personalised care, including self-management support and medication management, so that people’s views and needs are heard and validated by health professionals. Conclusions: More research is needed to explore the most effective pain management strategies, and public involvement is important to shape the most relevant research questions. Health and care systems evaluation is also needed to address the scale of the population health need. The pandemic appears to have highlighted pre-existing shortcomings in holistic pain management

    Cosmology of the selfaccelerating third order Galileon

    In this paper we start from the original formulation of the galileon model with the original choice for couplings to gravity. Within this framework we find that there is still a subset of possible Lagrangians that give selfaccelerating solutions with stable spherically symmetric solutions. This is a certain constrained subset of the third order galileon which has not been explored before. We develop and explore the background cosmological evolution of this model drawing intuition from other even more restricted galileon models. The numerical results confirm the presence of selfacceleration, but also reveals a possible instability with respect to galileon perturbations.Comment: 30 pages, 24 figure

    Effects of antiplatelet therapy on stroke risk by brain imaging features of intracerebral haemorrhage and cerebral small vessel diseases: subgroup analyses of the RESTART randomised, open-label trial

    Background Findings from the RESTART trial suggest that starting antiplatelet therapy might reduce the risk of recurrent symptomatic intracerebral haemorrhage compared with avoiding antiplatelet therapy. Brain imaging features of intracerebral haemorrhage and cerebral small vessel diseases (such as cerebral microbleeds) are associated with greater risks of recurrent intracerebral haemorrhage.
