A Thirty Kiloparsec Chain of "Beads on a String" Star Formation Between Two Merging Early Type Galaxies in the Core of a Strong-Lensing Galaxy Cluster
New Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet and optical imaging of the
strong-lensing galaxy cluster SDSS J1531+3414 (z=0.335) reveals two centrally
dominant elliptical galaxies participating in an ongoing major merger. The
interaction is at least somewhat rich in cool gas, as the merger is associated
with a complex network of nineteen massive superclusters of young stars (or
small tidal dwarf galaxies) separated by ~1 kpc in projection from one another,
combining to an estimated total star formation rate of ~5 solar masses per
year. The resolved young stellar superclusters are threaded by narrow H-alpha,
[O II], and blue excess filaments arranged in a network spanning ~27 kpc across
the two merging galaxies. This morphology is strongly reminiscent of the
well-known "beads on a string" mode of star formation observed on kpc-scales in
the arms of spiral galaxies, resonance rings, and in tidal tails between
interacting galaxies. Nevertheless, the arrangement of this star formation
relative to the nuclei of the two galaxies is difficult to interpret in a
dynamical sense, as no known "beads on a string" systems associated with
kpc-scale tidal interactions exhibit such lopsided morphology relative to the
merger participants. In this Letter we present the images and follow-up
spectroscopy, and discuss possible physical interpretations for the unique
arrangement of the young stellar clusters. While we suggest that this
morphology is likely to be dynamically short-lived, a more quantitative
understanding awaits necessary multiwavelength follow-up, including optical
integral field spectroscopy, ALMA sub-mm interferometry, and Chandra X-ray

An accessible proteogenomics informatics resource for cancer researchers
Proteogenomics has emerged as a valuable approach in cancer research, which integrates genomic and transcriptomic data with mass spectrometry–based proteomics data to directly identify expressed, variant protein sequences that may have functional roles in cancer. This approach is computationally intensive, requiring integration of disparate software tools into sophisticated workflows, challenging its adoption by nonexpert, bench scientists. To address this need, we have developed an extensible, Galaxy-based resource aimed at providing more researchers access to, and training in, proteogenomic informatics. Our resource brings together software from several leading research groups to address two foundational aspects of proteogenomics: (i) generation of customized, annotated protein sequence databases from RNA-Seq data; and (ii) accurate matching of tandem mass spectrometry data to putative variants, followed by filtering to confirm their novelty. Cost-effectiveness of Implementing Low-Tidal Volume Ventilation in Patients With Acute Lung Injury
Background: Despite widespread guidelines recommending the use of lung-protective ventilation (LPV) in patients with acute lung injury (ALI), many patients do not receive this lifesaving therapy. We sought to estimate the incremental clinical and economic outcomes associated with LPV and determined the maximum cost of a hypothetical intervention to improve adherence with LPV that remained cost-effective.
Methods: Adopting a societal perspective, we developed a theoretical decision model to determine the cost-effectiveness of LPV compared to non-LPV care. Model inputs were derived from the literature and a large population-based cohort of patients with ALI. Cost-effectiveness was determined as the cost per life saved and the cost per quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs) gained.
Results: Application of LPV resulted in an increase in QALYs gained by 15% (4.21 years for non-LPV vs 4.83 years for LPV), and an increase in lifetime costs of 99,588 for non-LPV vs 22,566 per life saved at hospital discharge and 9,482. Results were robust to a wide range of economic and patient parameter assumptions.

Carbon-Enhanced Metal-Poor Stars in the Inner and Outer Halo Components of the Milky Way
(Abridged) Carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars in the halo components of
the Milky Way are explored, based on accurate determinations of the
carbon-to-iron ([C/Fe]) abundance ratios and kinematic quantities for over
30000 calibration stars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Using our
present criterion that low-metallicity stars exhibiting [C/Fe] ratios
("carbonicity") in excess of [C/Fe] are considered CEMP stars, the
global frequency of CEMP stars in the halo system for \feh\ is 8%; for
\feh\ it is 12%; for \feh\ it is 20%. We also confirm a
significant increase in the level of carbon enrichment with declining
metallicity, growing from $\sim +1.0$ at \feh\ $= -1.5$ to
at \feh\ . The nature of the carbonicity
distribution function (CarDF) changes dramatically with increasing distance
above the Galactic plane, Z. For Z kpc, relatively few CEMP
stars are identified. For distances Z kpc, the CarDF exhibits a
strong tail towards high values, up to [C/Fe] +3.0. We also find a clear
increase in the CEMP frequency with Z. For stars with [Fe/H] 1.5, the frequency grows from 5% at Z kpc to 10% at Z
kpc. For stars with [Fe/H] 2.0, the frequency grows from 8% at
Z kpc to 25% at Z kpc. For stars with
[Fe/H] $\sim +1.0$ for 0 kpc $<$
$|$Z$|$ $<$ 10 kpc, with little dependence on $|$Z$|$; for [Fe/H] $< -$2.0,

The InfraRed Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) for TMT: latest science cases and simulations
The Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) first light instrument IRIS (Infrared
Imaging Spectrograph) will complete its preliminary design phase in 2016. The
IRIS instrument design includes a near-infrared (0.85 - 2.4 micron) integral
field spectrograph (IFS) and imager that are able to conduct simultaneous
diffraction-limited observations behind the advanced adaptive optics system
NFIRAOS. The IRIS science cases have continued to be developed and new science
studies have been investigated to aid in technical performance and design
requirements. In this development phase, the IRIS science team has paid
particular attention to the selection of filters, gratings, sensitivities of
the entire system, and science cases that will benefit from the parallel mode
of the IFS and imaging camera. We present new science cases for IRIS using the
latest end-to-end data simulator on the following topics: Solar System bodies,
the Galactic center, active galactic nuclei (AGN), and distant
gravitationally-lensed galaxies. We then briefly discuss the necessity of an

The On-Orbit Performance of the Galaxy Evolution Explorer
We report the first year on-orbit performance results for the Galaxy
Evolution Explorer (GALEX), a NASA Small Explorer that is performing a survey
of the sky in two ultraviolet bands. The instrument comprises a 50 cm diameter
modified Ritchey-Chretien telescope with a 1.25 degree field of view,
selectable imaging and objective grism spectroscopic modes, and an innovative
optical system with a thin-film multilayer dichroic beam splitter that enables
simultaneous imaging by a pair of photon counting, microchannel plate, delay
line readout detectors. Initial measurements demonstrate that GALEX is
performing well, meeting its requirements for resolution, efficiency,
