Discourses of Female Entrepreneurship in the Japanese Business Press – 25 Years and Little Progress
Drawing on social constructionist theory and critical discourse analysis in media studies, this article examines the portrayal of female entrepreneurs in the Japanese business press over a 25-year period from 1990 to 2014. We find that, despite the increased variety in the representations of female entrepreneurs, traditionally gendered discourses prevail in positioning women as inferior in the entrepreneurship discourse specifically, and in the social order at large. This positioning of female entrepreneurs is achieved by stereotypical representations, drawing on traditionally gendered ‘division of labour’ and ‘women and men are different’ frames, and is masked by seemingly feminist and progressive ‘work–life balance’ and ‘entrepreneurship as self-realization’ representations. Our findings resonate with those of other research in Western contexts and confirm the male-gendered nature of entrepreneurship in Japan. The discourses uncovered appear to be hinged on evaluative assumptions about the social world and women’s position within it and are reflective of and at the same time reify Japan’s capitalist male-dominated ideology. Moreover, as these portrayals shape societal attitudes, which are assumed to affect entrepreneurship levels, this lack of progress in the media discourse is likely to negatively affect female entrepreneurship levels

Testing of High Voltage Surge Protection Devices for Use in Liquid Argon TPC Detectors
In this paper we demonstrate the capability of high voltage varistors and gas
discharge tube arrestors for use as surge protection devices in liquid argon
time projection chamber detectors. The insulating and clamping behavior of each
type of device is characterized in air (room temperature), and liquid argon
(90~K), and their robustness under high voltage and high energy surges in
cryogenic conditions is verified. The protection of vulnerable components in
liquid argon during a 150 kV high voltage discharge is also demonstrated. Each
device is tested for argon contamination and light emission effects, and both
are constrained to levels where no significant impact upon liquid argon time
projection chamber functionality is expected. Both devices investigated are
shown to be suitable for HV surge protection applications in cryogenic

Synchronization reveals topological scales in complex networks
We study the relationship between topological scales and dynamic time scales
in complex networks. The analysis is based on the full dynamics towards
synchronization of a system of coupled oscillators. In the synchronization
process, modular structures corresponding to well defined communities of nodes
emerge in different time scales, ordered in a hierarchical way. The analysis
also provides a useful connection between synchronization dynamics, complex

The Effects of Dissolved Methane upon Liquid Argon Scintillation Light
In this paper we report on measurements of the effects of dissolved methane
upon argon scintillation light. We monitor the light yield from an alpha source
held 20 cm from a cryogenic photomultiplier tube (PMT) assembly as methane is
injected into a high-purity liquid argon volume. We observe significant
suppression of the scintillation light yield by dissolved methane at the 10
part per billion (ppb) level. By examining the late scintillation light time
constant, we determine that this loss is caused by an absorption process and
also see some evidence of methane-induced scintillation quenching at higher
concentrations (50-100 ppb). Using a second PMT assembly we look for visible
re-emission features from the dissolved methane which have been reported in
gas-phase argon methane mixtures, and we find no evidence of visible
re-emission from liquid-phase argon methane mixtures at concentrations between

In situ measurement of atmospheric krypton and xenon on Mars with Mars Science Laboratory
Mars Science Laboratory's Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) investigation has measured all of the stable isotopes of the heavy noble gases krypton and xenon in the martian atmosphere, in situ, from the Curiosity Rover at Gale Crater, Mars. Previous knowledge of martian atmospheric krypton and xenon isotope ratios has been based upon a combination of the Viking mission's krypton and xenon detections and measurements of noble gas isotope ratios in martian meteorites. However, the meteorite measurements reveal an impure mixture of atmospheric, mantle, and spallation contributions. The xenon and krypton isotopic measurements reported here include the complete set of stable isotopes, unmeasured by Viking. The new results generally agree with Mars meteorite measurements but also provide a unique opportunity to identify various non-atmospheric heavy noble gas components in the meteorites. Kr isotopic measurements define a solar-like atmospheric composition, but deviating from the solar wind pattern at 80Kr and 82Kr in a manner consistent with contributions originating from neutron capture in Br. The Xe measurements suggest an intriguing possibility that isotopes lighter than 132Xe have been enriched to varying degrees by spallation and neutron capture products degassed to the atmosphere from the regolith, and a model is constructed to explore this possibility. Such a spallation component, however, is not apparent in atmospheric Xe trapped in the glassy phases of martian meteorites
ADAM10 Regulates Transcription Factor Expression Required for Plasma Cell Function
A disintegrin and metalloprotease 10 (ADAM10) is a key regulator of cellular processes by shedding extracellular domains of transmembrane proteins. We have previously demonstrated that deletion of B cell expressed ADAM10 results in changes in lymphoid tissue architecture and impaired germinal center (GC) formation. In this study, mice were generated in which ADAM10 is deleted in B cells following class switch recombination (ADAM10Δ/ΔIgG1-cre+/−mice). Despite normal GC formation, antibody responses were impaired in ADAM10Δ/ΔIgG1-cre+/− mice, implicating ADAM10 in post-GC and extrafollicular B cell terminal differentiation. Surprisingly, plasma cell (PC) numbers were normal in ADAM10Δ/ΔIgG1-cre+/− mice when compared to controls. However, PCs isolated from ADAM10Δ/ΔIgG1-cre+/− mice exhibited decreased expression of transcription factors important for PC function: Prdm1, Xbp1 and Irf4.Bcl6 is a GC transcriptional repressor that inhibits the PC transcriptional program and thus must be downregulated for PC differentiation to occur. Bcl6 expression was increased in PCs isolated from ADAM10Δ/ΔIgG1-cre+/− mice at both the mRNA and protein level. These results demonstrate that ADAM10 is required for proper transcription factor expression in PCs and thus, for normal PC function
First direct observation of a nearly ideal graphene band structure
Angle-resolved photoemission and X-ray diffraction experiments show that
multilayer epitaxial graphene grown on the SiC(000-1) surface is a new form of
carbon that is composed of effectively isolated graphene sheets. The unique
rotational stacking of these films cause adjacent graphene layers to
electronically decouple leading to a set of nearly independent linearly
dispersing bands (Dirac cones) at the graphene K-point. Each cone corresponds
to an individual macro-scale graphene sheet in a multilayer stack where
AB-stacked sheets can be considered as low density faults.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
