    Assessment of STEM e-Learning in an Immersive Virtual Reality (VR) Environment

    This paper shows the early research findings of utilizing a virtual reality environment as an educational tool for the operation of a computerized numerical control (CNC) milling machine. Based off of a previous work, the Advanced Virtual Machining Lab (AVML), this project features a virtual environment in which a virtual CNC machine is fully operable, designed to allow STEM students and training professionals to learn the use of the CNC machine without the need to be in a physical lab. Users operate in the virtual environment using an immersive virtual reality headset (i.e. Oculus Rift) and standard input devices (i.e. mouse and keyboard), both of which combined make for easy movement and realistic visuals. On-screen tutorials allow users to learn about what they need to do to operate the machine without the need for outside instruction. While designing and perfecting this environment has been the primary focus of this project thus far, the research goal is to test the ease of use and the pedagogical effectiveness of the immersive technology as it relates to education in STEM fields. Initial usability studies for this environment featured students from the graduate level CAD/CAM-Theory and Advanced Applications (ME 54600) course at IUPUI. Results from the study were tabulated with a survey using a four-point Likert scale and several open-ended questions. Findings from the survey indicate that the majority of users found the environment realistic and easy to navigate, in addition to finding the immersive technology to be beneficial. Many also indicated that they felt comfortable navigating the environment without the need for additional assistance from the survey proctors. Full details on the first usability study, including data and discussion, can be found in this paper. The general consensus from the study was that, while some features needed refinement, the immersive environment helped them learn about the operation of a CNC machine. Additional usability studies will need to be undergone to refine said features before beginning the final study, in which students learning from the immersive virtual environment will be tested against students learning from traditional methods. Details on this last study will be discussed in the final paper, which will also discuss the methods used for preparing the environment, full results and detailed discussion on each of the usability studies, and conclusions on the usability and educational effectiveness of the immersive virtual reality technology in STEM education

    Motivational interviewing to enhance nicotine patch treatment for smoking cessation among homeless smokers: a randomized controlled trial

    Aims To assess the effects of adding motivational interviewing ( MI ) counseling to nicotine patch for smoking cessation among homeless smokers. Design Two‐group randomized controlled trial with 26‐week follow‐up. Participants and setting A total of 430 homeless smokers from emergency shelters and transitional housing units in M inneapolis/ S t Paul, M innesota, USA . Intervention and measurements All participants received 8‐week treatment of 21‐mg nicotine patch. In addition, participants in the intervention group received six individual sessions of MI counseling which aimed to increase adherence to nicotine patches and to motivate cessation. Participants in the standard care control group received one session of brief advice to quit smoking. Primary outcome was 7‐day abstinence from cigarette smoking at 26 weeks, as validated by exhaled carbon monoxide and salivary cotinine. Findings Using intention‐to‐treat analysis, verified 7‐day abstinence rate at week 26 for the intervention group was non‐significantly higher than for the control group (9.3% versus 5.6%, P  = 0.15). Among participants who did not quit smoking, reduction in number of cigarettes from baseline to week 26 was equally high in both study groups (−13.7 ± 11.9 for MI versus −13.5 ± 16.2 for standard care). Conclusions Adding motivational interviewing counseling to nicotine patch did not increase smoking rate significantly at 26‐week follow‐up for homeless smokers.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/98308/1/add12140.pd

    Assessing L2 Argumentation in the UAE Context

    In this rapidly changing world, argumentation and critical thinking skills are undeniably crucial for new generations of Emirati students. These skills lay the groundwork for a competitive economy, which is a priority for the UAE in its Vision 2021. Specifically, today’s modern workplaces require workers to evaluate different propositions and develop their own after weighing up these various ideas, and thus the ability to defend arguments in English has become increasingly important for UAE university students in English-medium universities as well as their future professional contexts. Despite this importance, research regarding argumentation and the related critical thinking skills is sorely lacking in the UAE. This chapter delineates how written argumentation was assessed in a timed essay in a mandatory argumentative writing course taken by university freshmen in a government university in the UAE, and how the feedback gleaned from this common assessment was mapped to the teaching curriculum to shed light on the teaching effectiveness and to provide directions for future teaching

    A multiple view polarimetric camera is developed. The system uses four separate action cameras and software is employed to map the images onto each other in order to generate the Stokes vectors, the degree of linear polarisation and angle images. To ensure robustness, an automated calibration system has been developed that ensures the pixels are correctly mapped. Video frame synchronisation is also developed

    Adverse events and residual lesion rate after cold endoscopic mucosal resection of serrated lesions ≥10 mm

    Background and Aims Cold endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) is being increasingly used for large serrated lesions. We sought to measure residual lesion rates and adverse events after cold EMR of large serrated lesions. Methods In a single academic center, we retrospectively examined a database of serrated class lesions ≥ 10 mm removed with cold EMR for safety and efficacy. Results Five hundred and sixty-six serrated lesions ≥10 mm in size were removed from 312 patients. We successfully contacted 223 patients (71.5%) with no reported serious adverse events that required hospitalization, repeat endoscopy, or transfusion. The residual lesion rate per lesion at first follow-up colonoscopy was 18 out of 225 (8%; 95% CI, 5-12.1). Lesions with residual were larger at polypectomy compared with lesions without recurrence (median, 23 mm vs 16 mm, p=0.017). Conclusion Cold EMR appears to be safe and effective for the removal of large serrated lesions

    Rapid development of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis in Psammomys obesus (Israeli sand rat)

    Background and Aims: A major impediment to establishing new treatments for non-alcoholic steatohepatitis is the lack of suitable animal models that accurately mimic the biochemical and metabolic characteristics of the disease. The aim of this study was to explore a unique polygenic animal model of metabolic disease as a model of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis by determining the effects of 2% dietary cholesterol supplementation on metabolic and liver endpoints in Psammomys obesus (Israeli sand rat). Methods: P. obesus were provided ad libitum access to either a standard rodent diet (20% kcal/fat) or a standard rodent diet supplemented with 2% cholesterol (w/w) for 4 weeks. Histological sections of liver from animals on both diets were examined for key features of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. The expression levels of key genes involved in hepatic lipid metabolism were measured by real-time PCR. Results: P. obesus fed a cholesterol-supplemented diet exhibited profound hepatomegaly and steatosis, and higher plasma transaminase levels. Histological analysis identified extensive steatosis, inflammation, hepatocyte injury and fibrosis. Hepatic gene expression profiling revealed decreased expression of genes involved in delivery and uptake of lipids, and fatty acid and triglyceride synthesis, and increased expression of genes involved in very low density lipoprotein cholesterol synthesis, triglyceride and cholesterol export. Conclusions: P. obesus rapidly develop non-alcoholic steatohepatitis when fed a cholesterol-supplemented diet that appears to be histologically and mechanistically similar to patients. © 2014 Spolding et al

    Pneumococcal colonization in healthy adult research participants in the conjugate vaccine era, United Kingdom, 2010-2017.

    Pneumococcal colonization is rarely studied in adults, except as part of family surveys. We report the outcomes of colonization screening in healthy adults (non-smokers without major comorbidities or contact with children under five years) who had volunteered to take part in clinical research. Using nasal wash culture, we detected colonization in 6.5% (52/795) of volunteers. Serotype 3 was the commonest serotype (10/52). The majority of the remainder (35/52) were non-vaccine serotypes, but we also identified persistent circulation of serotypes 19A and 19F. Resistance to at least one of six antibiotics tested was found in 8/52 isolates

    Interspecific Communicative and Coordinated Hunting between Groupers and Giant Moray Eels in the Red Sea

    Intraspecific group hunting has received considerable attention because of the close links between cooperative behaviour and its cognitive demands. Accordingly, comparisons between species have focused on behaviours that can potentially distinguish between the different levels of cognitive complexity involved, such as “intentional” communication between partners in order to initiate a joint hunt, the adoption of different roles during a joint hunt (whether consistently or alternately), and the level of food sharing following a successful hunt. Here we report field observations from the Red Sea on the highly coordinated and communicative interspecific hunting between the grouper, Plectropomus pessuliferus, and the giant moray eel, Gymnothorax javanicus. We provide evidence of the following: (1) associations are nonrandom, (2) groupers signal to moray eels in order to initiate joint searching and recruit moray eels to prey hiding places, (3) signalling is dependent on grouper hunger level, and (4) both partners benefit from the association. The benefits of joint hunting appear to be due to complementary hunting skills, reflecting the evolved strategies of each species, rather than individual role specialisation during joint hunts. In addition, the partner species that catches a prey item swallows it whole immediately, making aggressive monopolisation of a carcass impossible. We propose that the potential for monopolisation of carcasses by one partner species represents the main constraint on the evolution of interspecific cooperative hunting for most potentially suitable predator combinations
