    Adaptive and Flexible Dictionary Code Compression for Embedded Applications

    ABSTRACT Dictionary code compression is a technique where long instructions in the memory are replaced with shorter code words used as index in a table to look up the original instructions. We present a new view of dictionary code compression for moderately high-performance processors for embedded applications. Previous work with dictionary code compression has shown decent performance and energy savings results which we verify with our own measurement that are more thorough than previously published. We also augment previous work with a more thorough analysis on the effects of cache and line size changes. In addition, we introduce the concept of aggregated profiling to allow for two or more programs to share the same dictionary contents. Finally, we also introduce dynamic dictionaries where the dictionary contents is considered to be part of the context of a process and show that the performance overhead of reloading the dictionary contents on a context switch is negligible while on the same time we can save considerable energy with a more specialized dictionary contents

    The human pathogen Streptococcus pyogenes primarily infects the upper respiratory tract and skin, but occasionally it disseminates and causes severe invasive disease with high mortality. This study revealed that the activity of extracellular EndoS, which hydrolyzes the functionally important N-linked oligosaccharides on opsonizing immunoglobulin G (IgG), contributes to increased survival of S. pyogenes in human blood ex vivo. The inability to kill the bacteria is due to reduced binding of IgG to Fc receptors and impaired classical pathway-mediated activation of complement. In addition, the activity of extracellular SpeB, which cleaves IgG into Fc and Fab fragments, also increases bacterial survival. This suggests that S. pyogenes expresses two enzymes, EndoS and SpeB, which modulate IgG by different mechanisms in order to evade the adaptive immune system

    MTL-CEBPA, a Small Activating RNA Therapeutic Upregulating C/EBP-α, in Patients with Advanced Liver Cancer: A First-in-Human, Multicenter, Open-Label, Phase I Trial.

    PURPOSE: Transcription factor C/EBP-α (CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein alpha) acts as a master regulator of hepatic and myeloid functions and multiple oncogenic processes. MTL-CEBPA is a first-in-class small activating RNA oligonucleotide drug that upregulates C/EBP-α. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a phase I, open-label, dose-escalation trial of MTL-CEBPA in adults with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with cirrhosis, or resulting from nonalcoholic steatohepatitis or with liver metastases. Patients received intravenous MTL-CEBPA once a week for 3 weeks followed by a rest period of 1 week per treatment cycle in the dose-escalation phase (3+3 design). RESULTS: Thirty-eight participants have been treated across six dose levels (28-160 mg/m2) and three dosing schedules. Thirty-four patients were evaluable for safety endpoints at 28 days. MTL-CEBPA treatment-related adverse events were not associated with dose, and no maximum dose was reached across the three schedules evaluated. Grade 3 treatment-related adverse events occurred in nine (24%) patients. In 24 patients with HCC evaluable for efficacy, an objective tumor response was achieved in one patient [4%; partial response (PR) for over 2 years] and stable disease (SD) in 12 (50%). After discontinuation of MTL-CEBPA, seven patients were treated with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs); three patients had a complete response with one further PR and two with SD. CONCLUSIONS: MTL-CEBPA is the first saRNA in clinical trials and demonstrates an acceptable safety profile and potential synergistic efficacy with TKIs in HCC. These encouraging phase I data validate targeting of C/EBP-α and have prompted MTL-CEBPA + sorafenib combination studies in HCC

    Opinnäytetyön aiheena on omakotitalon sähkölämmitys. Tarkastelu rajattiin ensisijaisesti koskemaan normaaleja pientaloja ja työssä selvitettiin, minkälaisia eri vaihtoehtoja on tarjolla markkinoilla huonekohtaiseen sähkölämmitykseen ja sen ohjaukseen. Toisena tavoitteena oli antaa yleistietoa omakotitalon energiankulutuksesta. Aluksi työssä tutustuttiin, miten lämmitysenergia vaikuttaa talossa. Varsinaisessa käsittely-osuudessa keskityttiin tarkastelemaan markkinoilla olevia sähkölämmitystapoja ja niiden toimintaan liittyviä asioita. Työn loppuosiossa vertailtiin lämmitysjärjestelmän valintaan vaikuttavia asioita ja Glen Dimplex Nordicin keskitettyä ohjausjärjestelmää. Työssä käytettiin apuna sähköalan kirjallisuutta, ST-kortiston ohjeita ja laajalti eri alan Internet-sivustoja. Tulosten perusteella hyvin suunniteltu ja asennettu huonekohtainen sähkölämmityksen ohjaus voi tuoda huomattavaa säästöä omakotitalon energiankulutukseen.The purpose of this thesis was to examine the heating of a single-family detached home. To introduce the subject, heating systems of normally built structures are summarized. The main objective, however, was to explore what solutions are available on the market for room-specific electric heating. The secondary goal was to give the reader general knowledge about energy consumption in a single-family detached home. The study first illustrates how heat energy flows in buildings. Special attention is then paid to examining already existing electric heating solutions and their functionality. The last part of the thesis compares common considerations that affect the selection of a heating system for home and introduces the new Nobö Energy Control system. The thesis was based on wide study of literature from the field of construction and electricity. Different kinds of internet sources were also used as reference. The results of this thesis show that a well designed and installed room-specific electric heating control system can bring significant savings for energy consumption in a single-family detached home

    Deposits of the Devonian Ogre Formation in outcrops at the banks of the Abava River and its tributaries: composition, structure and origin

    Bakalaura darbā mērķis ir raksturot Abavas un tās pieteku krastu atsegumos sastopamo Ogres svītas nogulumiežu sastāvu, uzbūvi, izdalīt to fācijas un raksturot to veidošanās apstākļus. Kalnmuižas, Abavas Velnalas un Langsēdes atsegumos ir sastādīti ģeoloģiskie griezumi, ņemtajiem paraugiem veikta granulometriskā analīze, raksturoti paleostraumju virzieni, izdalītas fācijas un fāciju secības. Pētījuma rezultātā tika noskaidrots, ka Ogres svītas nogulumieži tagadējā Velnalas apkārtnē ir veidojušies dominējot fluviālajiem procesiem. Tagadējā Kalnmuižas apkārtnē ir veidojušies, mijoties fluviālajiem procesiem un plūdmaiņu ietekmei. Savukārt, Ogres svītas nogulumieži tagadējā Langsēdes atseguma apkārtnē arī ir veidojušies mijoties fluviālajiem procesiem un plūdmaiņu ietekmei, pie tam ir būtiski mainījusies hidrodinamiskā režīma aktivitāte. Atslēgas vārdi: Devons, klastiskā sedimentācija, fāciju analīze, granulometriskā analīze, paleostraumju virzieni.The objective of this thesis is to give description of deposits of the Devonian Ogre Formation at the Abava river and its tributaries: their composition, structure, facies and origin as well. Geological sections were composed in Kalnmuiža, Abavas Velnala and Langsēde outcrops. Specimens were taken to analyze grain size, the directions of palaeostreams have been analysed, facies and their sequences were divided. As a result a conclusion was made that sedimentary rocks of the Ogre Formation, present in Velnala area, were formed under dominating fluvial processes. Deposits present in Kalmuiža area were formed under alternate fluvial processes and tidal influence. Sedimentary rocks of the Ogre Formation present in Langsēde outcrop were subjected to the influence of alternate fluvial processes and tidal influence as well, but the hydrodynamic activity has changed substantially.
