    Constant Pressure CO2 Replacement of CH4 in Different Hydrate Environments: Structure and Morphology

    Gas hydrates (GHs) are solid, ice-like compounds composed of water molecules forming a lattice structure that hosts gas molecules, produced under high pressure and low temperature. The structure of the hydrate structure is affected by the surrounding environment, and in this context, a structural characterization of GHs prepared in different environments, ultrapure (UP) water, seawater, synthetic sand, natural sand, and sodium dodecyl sulfate, has been proposed. In particular, the Raman spectroscopy has been used to investigate the structural changes in the water cages, the gas uptake in the hydrate structure, the CH4 cage occupancies, the hydration number, and the yield of carbon dioxide replacement at constant pressure. For this comparison, CH4-hydrates, CO2-hydrates, and CH4/CO2-hydrates (obtained from an implemented replacement process) were prepared in five different experimental conditions mentioned above and structurally characterized. From Raman investigation, pure CH4-hydrates displayed almost full (>95%) occupation in the large cage and a significant change in the small cage occupation related to the different tested media. The cage occupancy calculation of CO2/CH4-hydrates showed that a higher yield of replacement can be obtained in UP water and that CH4-hydrates in natural sand and in seawater, which are the most representing of natural environments, displayed a good replacement of CH4 with CO2. Additionally, the ex situ morphological characterization of the GHs by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) allowed the highlighting of morphological differences among the investigated samples

    Post-release habitats’ selection of Capreolus capreolus italicus (Festa, 1925) in a protected area in southern Italy

    The purpose of this study was to analyze the post-release behavior of individuals of Capreolus capreolus italicus (Festa 1925) and to evaluate the influence of environmental and vegetation characteristics on habitat selection by monitored animals. With these aims, 14 individuals of roe deer (a sample of 75 animals released in total), differentiated by age and sex, were caught in areas of southern Tuscany (central Italy) and released in suitable areas of the Aspromonte National Park (Calabria, southern Italy). Each animal was monitored by GPS-GSM tracking radio collar (Vectronics ®) with frequency of location ranging from 30 minutes (in the first month) to 6 hours (later), and covering a period ranging from 90 to 563 days. Each fix, reported in a GIS environment, was analyzed to get information on habitat selection performed by tracked animals. Data collection implemented forest area, herbaceous resources characterization and the evaluation of possible visual refuge offered to the animals by the environment, to assess the effect of these attributes on the selection of grounds. Results showed that the choice of a particular habitat is highly correlated with forests’ characteristics, the areas covered by conifers and with height of crown insertion between 1 and 2 m, generally with absence of regeneration, being clearly preferred. Most attended herbaceous areas are those with a high presence of grasses and with a high pastoral value. Visual refuge affects also remarkably the selection of habitats by animals. The study showed that the observed parameters can provide a good basis for the validation of the model used for the feasibility study and to identify the optimal characteristics of the areas for future releases

    Impact of DWI and ADC values in ovarian-adnexal reporting and data system (O-RADS) MRI score

    Purpose: Introduce DWI and quantitative ADC evaluation in O-RADS MRI system and observe how diagnostic performance changes. Assess its validity and reproducibility between readers with different experience in female pelvic imaging. Finally, evaluate any correlation between ADC value and histotype in malignant lesions. Materials and methods: In total, 173 patients with 213 indeterminate adnexal masses (AMs) on ultrasound were subjected to MRI examination, from which 140 patients with 172 AMs were included in the final analysis. Standardised MRI sequences were used, including DWI and DCE sequences. Two readers, blinded to histopathological data, retrospectively classified AMs according to the O-RADS MRI scoring system. A quantitative analysis method was applied by placing a ROI on the ADC maps obtained from single-exponential DWI sequences. AMs considered benign (O-RADS MRI score 2) were excluded from the ADC analysis. Results: Excellent inter-reader agreement was found in the classification of lesions according to the O-RADS MRI score (K = 0.936; 95% CI). Two ROC curves were created to determine the optimal cut-off value for the ADC variable between O-RADS MRI categories 3-4 and 4-5, respectively, 1.411 × 10-3 mm2/sec and 0.849 × 10-3 mm2/sec. Based on these ADC values, 3/45 and 22/62 AMs were upgraded, respectively, to score 4 and 5, while 4/62 AMs were downgraded to score 3. ADC values correlated significantly with the ovarian carcinoma histotype (p value < 0.001). Conclusion: Our study demonstrates the prognostic potential of DWI and ADC values in the O-RADS MRI classification for better radiological standardisation and characterisation of AMs

    The topology of a discussion: the #occupy case

    We analyse a large sample of the Twitter activity developed around the social movement 'Occupy Wall Street' to study the complex interactions between the human communication activity and the semantic content of a discussion. We use a network approach based on the analysis of the bipartite graph @Users-#Hashtags and of its projections: the 'semantic network', whose nodes are hashtags, and the 'users interest network', whose nodes are users In the first instance, we find out that discussion topics (#hashtags) present a high heterogeneity, with the distinct role of the communication hubs where most the 'opinion traffic' passes through. In the second case, the self-organization process of users activity leads to the emergence of two classes of communicators: the 'professionals' and the 'amateurs'. Moreover the network presents a strong community structure, based on the differentiation of the semantic topics, and a high level of structural robustness when a certain set of topics are censored and/or accounts are removed. Analysing the characteristics the @Users-#Hashtags network we can distinguish three phases of the discussion about the movement. Each phase corresponds to specific moment of the movement: from declaration of intent, organisation and development and the final phase of political reactions.     Poorly differentiated carcinoma arising from adenolymphoma of the parotid gland

    BACKGROUND: There is only one previous case report of a poorly differentiated carcinoma arising from an adenolymphoma of the parotid gland (Warthin's tumour). The absence of clinical symptoms, and the aspecificity of the radiological pattern make the diagnosis very difficult. CASE PRESENTATION: We here report the case of a 73-year-old man with Warthin's tumour who was brought to our attention because of a swelling in the parotid region. CONCLUSIONS: In this case with an atypical clinical presentation, the intra-operative examination of a frozen section of the parotid mass allowed us to diagnose the malignant tumour correctly and consequently undertake its radical excision

    Damage detection via shortest-path network sampling

    Large networked systems are constantly exposed to local damages and failures that can alter their functionality. The knowledge of the structure of these systems is, however, often derived through sampling strategies whose effectiveness at damage detection has not been thoroughly investigated so far. Here, we study the performance of shortest-path sampling for damage detection in large-scale networks. We define appropriate metrics to characterize the sampling process before and after the damage, providing statistical estimates for the status of nodes (damaged, not damaged). The proposed methodology is flexible and allows tuning the trade-off between the accuracy of the damage detection and the number of probes used to sample the network. We test and measure the efficiency of our approach considering both synthetic and real networks data. Remarkably, in all of the systems studied, the number of correctly identified damaged nodes exceeds the number of false positives, allowing us to uncover the damage precisely

    Common variants near FRK/COL10A1 and VEGFA are associated with advanced age-related macular degeneration

    Despite significant progress in the identification of genetic loci for age-related macular degeneration (AMD), not all of the heritability has been explained. To identify variants which contribute to the remaining genetic susceptibility, we performed the largest meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies to date for advanced AMD. We imputed 6 036 699 single-nucleotide polymorphisms with the 1000 Genomes Project reference genotypes on 2594 cases and 4134 controls with follow-up replication of top signals in 5640 cases and 52 174 controls. We identified two new common susceptibility alleles, rs1999930 on 6q21-q22.3 near FRK/COL10A1 [odds ratio (OR) 0.87; P = 1.1 × 10−8] and rs4711751 on 6p12 near VEGFA (OR 1.15; P = 8.7 × 10−9). In addition to the two novel loci, 10 previously reported loci in ARMS2/HTRA1 (rs10490924), CFH (rs1061170, and rs1410996), CFB (rs641153), C3 (rs2230199), C2 (rs9332739), CFI (rs10033900), LIPC (rs10468017), TIMP3 (rs9621532) and CETP (rs3764261) were confirmed with genome-wide significant signals in this large study. Loci in the recently reported genes ABCA1 and COL8A1 were also detected with suggestive evidence of association with advanced AMD. The novel variants identified in this study suggest that angiogenesis (VEGFA) and extracellular collagen matrix (FRK/COL10A1) pathways contribute to the development of advanced AMD

    Colorectal Cancer Stage at Diagnosis Before vs During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Italy

    IMPORTANCE Delays in screening programs and the reluctance of patients to seek medical attention because of the outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 could be associated with the risk of more advanced colorectal cancers at diagnosis. OBJECTIVE To evaluate whether the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic was associated with more advanced oncologic stage and change in clinical presentation for patients with colorectal cancer. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS This retrospective, multicenter cohort study included all 17 938 adult patients who underwent surgery for colorectal cancer from March 1, 2020, to December 31, 2021 (pandemic period), and from January 1, 2018, to February 29, 2020 (prepandemic period), in 81 participating centers in Italy, including tertiary centers and community hospitals. Follow-up was 30 days from surgery. EXPOSURES Any type of surgical procedure for colorectal cancer, including explorative surgery, palliative procedures, and atypical or segmental resections. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES The primary outcome was advanced stage of colorectal cancer at diagnosis. Secondary outcomes were distant metastasis, T4 stage, aggressive biology (defined as cancer with at least 1 of the following characteristics: signet ring cells, mucinous tumor, budding, lymphovascular invasion, perineural invasion, and lymphangitis), stenotic lesion, emergency surgery, and palliative surgery. The independent association between the pandemic period and the outcomes was assessed using multivariate random-effects logistic regression, with hospital as the cluster variable. RESULTS A total of 17 938 patients (10 007 men [55.8%]; mean [SD] age, 70.6 [12.2] years) underwent surgery for colorectal cancer: 7796 (43.5%) during the pandemic period and 10 142 (56.5%) during the prepandemic period. Logistic regression indicated that the pandemic period was significantly associated with an increased rate of advanced-stage colorectal cancer (odds ratio [OR], 1.07; 95%CI, 1.01-1.13; P = .03), aggressive biology (OR, 1.32; 95%CI, 1.15-1.53; P < .001), and stenotic lesions (OR, 1.15; 95%CI, 1.01-1.31; P = .03). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE This cohort study suggests a significant association between the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and the risk of a more advanced oncologic stage at diagnosis among patients undergoing surgery for colorectal cancer and might indicate a potential reduction of survival for these patients

    Total Synthesis of Natural Disaccharide Sambubiose

    A practical and robust synthetic method to obtain the natural disaccharide sambubiose (2-O-β-D-xylopyranosyl-D-glucopyranose) is reported, exploring the key step in the synthesis, i.e., stereoselective O-glycosylation. Specifically, the best combinations of glycoside donors and acceptors were identified, stereospecific control of the reaction was achieved by screening several catalysts and protection/deprotection steps were evaluated and improved. The best result was obtained by coupling allyl 3,5,6-tri-O-benzyl-β-D-glucofuranoside with 2,3,4-tri-O-acetyl-D-xylopiranosyl-α-trichloro acetimidate in the presence of trimethylsilyl triflate as a catalyst giving the corresponding protected target compound as a correct single isomer. The latter was transformed accordingly into the desired final product by deprotection steps (deallylation, deacetylation, and debenzylation).
