    Mosquitoes of Kudat: species composition and their medical importance(diptera: culicidae)

    A survey of mosquito fauna was done to determine the mosquito population and species composition in Kudat. Outdoor human landing catches (HLC) were done from April to June 2015. A total of 4,350 mosquitoes, representing eight genera and 37 species were collected. These include Aedes (Stegomyia), Aedimorphus, Anopheles, Armigeres, Culex, Mansonia, Phagomyia and Uranotaenia. Medical important species are specially noted and discussed. Armigeres (52.7%) was the most abundant, followed by Culex (31.9%), Aedes (9.4%), and Anopheles (4.3%). Armigeres kesseli and Ar. subabaltus were the two most common species. Armigeres annulipalpi and Phagomyia prominens are new records of Sabah

    First detection of Babesia sp. in Bornean sun bear (Helarctos malayanus euryspilus Horsfield) in Sabah, Malaysia

    The Bornean sun bear, a subspecies of the endangered Malayan sun bear, resides only on Borneo Island and little is known about diseases or parasites that may impact their health. In 2019, blood and ticks were collected from 46 captive bears held at the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre in Sabah, Malaysia during annual health examinations in response to previous blood smear analysis that revealed presumptive haemoparasites in more than half the resident bears. Polymerase chain reaction detected a unique Babesia sp. in one of the bears. Disease surveillance of mosquitoes trapped along the outer perimeter of the bears’ outdoor enclosure did not reveal any malaria parasites. This research marks the first documented case in Bornean sun bears of both a Babesia sp. and the Ixodes tick Haemaphysalis nr koningsbergeri. More research on incriminating the vector and the effects of Babesia infection on the health of Bornean sun bears is needed. Due to the zoonotic nature of babesiosis, mitigative actions should be taken to protect any humans that work with or come into close contact with these captive bears or their enclosures

    Stability evaluation of a grid-tied hybrid wind/PV farm joined with a hybrid energy-storage system

    This paper presents the stability-evaluation outcomes of a multimachine power system (MMPS) connected with a large-scale hybrid wind farm (WF) and photovoltaic (PV) farm or hybrid wind/PV farm (HWPF) and a hybrid energy-storage system (HESS) consisting of a vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) and a supercapacitor (SC). A probability scheme is used to determine the rated power of the proposed HESS, where the capacities of the VRFB-ESS and the SC-ESS are designed to effectively utilize their operating features. The control strategy of the HESS is proposed to reduce the pressure of the VRFB-ESS and smooth the output power fluctuations of the HWPF. The steady-state stability, small-signal stability, dynamic performances, and transient simulations of the studied grid-tied HWPF fed to the MMPS with and without the HESS are achieved. The simulation outcomes show that the proposed HESS can enhance the stability and power-smoothing performance of the HWPF fed to the MMPS

    Observation of the Decays B0->K+pi-pi0 and B0->rho-K+

    We report the observation of B^0 decays to the K^+pi^-pi^0 final state using a data sample of 78 fb^-1 collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB e^+e^- collider. With no assumptions about intermediate states in the decay, the branching fraction is measured to be (36.6^{+4.2}_{-4.3}+- 3.0)*10^-6.We also search for B decays to intermediate two-body states with the same K^+pi^-pi^0 final state. Significant B signals are observed in the rho(770)^- K^+ and K^*(892)^+pi^- channels, with branching fractions of (15.1^{+3.4+1.4+2.0}_{-3.3-1.5-2.1})* 10^-6 and (14.8^{+4.6+1.5+2.4}_{-4.4-1.0-0.9})* 10^-6, respectively. The first error is statistical, the second is systematic and the third is due to the largest possible interference. Contributions from other possible two-body states will be discussed. No CP asymmetry is found in the inclusive K^+pi^-pi^0 or rho^-K^+ modes, and we set 90% confidence level bounds on the asymmetry of -0.12<A_{CP}<0.26 and -0.18<A_{CP}<0.64, respectively.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figure

    The Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) is a network of three detectors built to detect local perturbations in the space–time metric from astrophysical sources. These detectors, two in Hanford, WA and one in Livingston, LA, are power-recycled Fabry-Perot Michelson interferometers. In their fifth science run (S5), between November 2005 and October 2007, these detectors accumulated one year of triple coincident data while operating at their designed sensitivity.     On the possibility of fuzzy method and its mathematical framework in OBE measurements

    This paper describes the approach of using fuzzy logic to design a measurement system in outcome-based education (OBE). The traditional OBE and its measurement method are first presented. A fuzzy system is then designed based on the traditional OBE measurement. We have tested both systems using a set of course assessment and found the mean square errors between traditional OBE and fuzzy method to be small. We have further shown how the fuzzy system can be modified to accommodate different levels of difficulty based on course assessments and concluded on the possibility of employing fuzzy method in OBE measurements as it offers flexibility in tuning the input-output relationships of OBE course assessment
