    Isomonodromic deformations of connections with singularities of parahoric formal type

    In previous work, the authors have developed a geometric theory of fundamental strata to study connections on the projective line with irregular singularities of parahoric formal type. In this paper, the moduli space of connections that contain regular fundamental strata with fixed combinatorics at each singular point is constructed as a smooth Poisson reduction. The authors then explicitly compute the isomonodromy equations as an integrable system. This result generalizes work of Jimbo, Miwa, and Ueno to connections whose singularities have parahoric formal type.Comment: 32 pages. It now states that the isomonodromy equations give rise to an integrable system on the moduli space of framed connections with fixed combinatorics instead of only on a principal GL_n bundle over this space.     Hydrologic change in New Zealand during the last deglaciation linked to reorganization of the Southern Hemisphere westerly winds

    Millennial‐scale climate anomalies punctuating the last deglaciation were expressed differently in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. While changes in oceanic meridional overturning circulation have been invoked to explain these disparities, the nearly synchronous onset of such events requires atmospheric mediation. Yet the extent and structure of atmospheric reorganization on millennial timescales remains unclear. In particular, the role of the Southern Hemisphere westerly winds (SHWW) and associated storm tracks is poorly constrained, largely due to the paucity of accessible archives of wind behavior. Here we present a new paleohydrologic record from a Lake Hayes, New Zealand (45° S) sediment core from ~17‐9 ka. Using two independent proxies for lake hydrology (Ca/Ti in sediments and δD values of aquatic plant biomarkers), we find evidence for a wetter Antarctic Cold Reversal (ACR, 14.7‐13.0 ka) and a drying trend during the Younger Dryas (YD, 12.9‐11.6 ka) and early Holocene (11.7 ka onward in this record). Comparisons of the Lake Hayes record with other Southern Hemisphere sites indicate coherent atmospheric shifts during the ACR and YD, whereby the former is wetter/cooler and the latter is drier/warmer. The wet/cool phase is associated with a northward shift and/or strengthening of the SHWW, whereas the drier/warmer phase indicates weaker mid‐latitude winds. These climatic trends are opposite to the Northern Hemisphere. There is a decoupling of climatic trends between Southern Hemisphere low‐ and mid‐latitude climates in the early Holocene, which could be explained by several mechanisms, such as the retreat of Antarctic sea ice

However, the processes that transport iron to the ocean surface are poorly quantified. We combine satellite and meteorological data to provide the first description of widespread dust transport from coastal Alaska into the GoA. Dust is frequently transported from glacially-derived sediment at the mouths of several rivers, the most prominent of which is the Copper River. These dust events occur most frequently in autumn, when coastal river levels are low and riverbed sediments are exposed. The dust plumes are transported several hundred kilometers beyond the continental shelf into iron-limited waters. We estimate the mass of dust transported from the Copper River valley during one 2006 dust event to be between 25–80 ktons. Based on conservative estimates, this equates to a soluble iron loading of 30–200 tons. We suggest the soluble Fe flux from dust originating in glaciofluvial sediment deposits from the entire GoA coastline is two to three times larger, and is comparable to the annual Fe flux to GoA surface waters from eddies of coastal origin. Given that glaciers are retreating in the coastal GoA region and in other locations, it is important to examine whether fluxes of dust are increasing from glacierized landscapes to the ocean, and to assess the impact of associated Fe on marine ecosystems.We appreciate support from the USGS CMGP, NCCWSC, the Mendenhall postdoc program, the Woods Hole PEP intern program, and from NASA‐IDS

    Seismic stratigraphy of Lago Fagnano sediments (Tierra del Fuego, Argentina) - A potencial archive of paleoclimatic change and tectonic activity since the Late Glacial

    Located at 54ºS in the heart of the Island of Tierra del Fuego, Lago Fagnano occupies the deepest of a chain of en-echelon tectonic depressions along the Magallanes-Fagnano Transform system (MFT). A recent geophysical campaign combining 3.5 kHz (pinger) single-channel with 1 in3 airgun multi-channel systems surveyed more than 100 m of glacio-lacustrine sediments filling two main sub-basins. These data provide a unique opportunity to visualize the most recent lacustrine sequence with high-resolution while simultaneously imaging the oldest infill. A preliminary seismic stratigraphic analysis of the high-resolution 3.5 kHz pinger data allowed the identification of three major seismostratigraphic units (A, the oldest and C, the youngest). While unit A is interpreted as glacially derived sediments, the overlying unit B is interpreted as fining upward sequences of proglacial turbidites reflecting sediment pulses released by the retreating Fagnano glacier during the last deglaciation. A major environmental change occurred during deposition of unit C when pelagic style of sedimentation is intercalated by sequences of downslope mass flow events probably triggered by relatively strong tectonic pulses along the MFT system. Gravity cores show a regular alternation of light and dark laminae occasionally interrupted by homogenous sedimentary units interpreted as turbidites. Ultra-high resolution X-ray fluorescence micro-profiles show fluctuations in major trace elements at mm scale that may indicate seasonal variations in the sedimentary influx. These core data provide a unique record of decadal changes in regional climate that can be compared with other marine and continental archives to improve our understanding of the forcing mechanisms behind climate change

    Position of Aleutian Low Drives Dramatic Inter-Annual Variability in Atmospheric Transport of Glacial Iron to the Gulf of Alaska

    Our understanding of glacial flour dust storm delivery of iron to the Gulf of Alaska (GoA) is limited. We interpret concurrent time-series satellite, meteorological, and aerosol geochemical data from the GoA to examine how inter-annual variability in regional weather patterns impacts offshore aerosol glacial iron transport. In 2011, when a northerly Aleutian Low (AL) was persistent during fall, dust emission was suppressed and highly intermittent due to prevalent wet conditions, low winds and a deep early season snowpack. Conversely, in 2012, frequent and prolonged fall dust storms and high offshore glacial iron transport were driven by dry conditions and strong offshore winds generated by persistent strong high pressure over the Alaskan interior and Bering Sea and a southerly AL. Remarkable inter-annual variability in offshore glacial aerosol iron transport indicates that the role of glacial dust in GoA nutrient cycles is likely highly dynamic and particularly sensitive to regional climate forcing

    Molecular characteristics of infection and colonization isolates of community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA)

    Staphylococcus aureus is a gram-positive coccus that colonizes the skin and mucous membranes, particularly the anterior nares. Recently, community-acquired MRSA (CA-MRSA) has emerged as a cause of skin and soft-tissue infections in healthy individuals. These strains are sensitive to antimicrobials, carry genes for Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) toxin, and feature the staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) type IV or V. The suspected mode of transmission involves close contact with carriers, leading to skin or nasal colonization that results in subsequent active infection. This study was undertaken to determine the molecular characteristics of CA-MRSA isolates in children presenting with wound infections at Likas Hospital, Sabah, Malaysia, and the possible mode of transmission. The results showed that the majority of CA-MRSA infection isolates were from scalp abscesses (49%) in 1–5-year-old children (70%) in the Filipino (54%) community. The presence of the mec gene was detected in all isolates and the PVL virulence factor was found in 92% of the isolates. SCCmec typing revealed that 57% of the isolates were untypable, 35% harbored the SCCmecIVa element, and one each had SCCmecIVc, SCCmecV, or SCCmecII. Sixteen S. aureus strains were isolated from nasal swabs in 19 family members of index patients. Fourteen of these cultures were positive for catalase, coagulase, and DNAase. All of the colonization isolates carried the mecA gene and only a third were positive for the PVL toxin. SCCmec typing showed that 79% of the isolates were untypable and two had SCCmecIVa element and one had SCCmecV element. When five pairs of infection and colonizing isolates were compared by spa typing, only two pairs showed identical spa type with possible transmission between the patient and family contact. Further studies are necessary to establish CA-MRSA transmission by performing multiple-site cultures multiple times instead of one-time naresonly sample collection

Applying an equity lens to their leadership style and systems-level change work, a focus on the inner world, and network activation are some of the unique approaches the program uses that have resulted in advancing equitable leadership and a culture of health around the country. Use of rapid cycle learning and participant-led activities has allowed program staff to build upon lessons learned and adapt to participant needs in order to evolve the programming and participant experience since its inception in 2016

    AR2, a novel automatic muscle artifact reduction software method for ictal EEG interpretation: Validation and comparison of performance with commercially available software.

    Objective: To develop a novel software method (AR2) for reducing muscle contamination of ictal scalp electroencephalogram (EEG), and validate this method on the basis of its performance in comparison to a commercially available software method (AR1) to accurately depict seizure-onset location. Methods: A blinded investigation used 23 EEG recordings of seizures from 8 patients. Each recording was uninterpretable with digital filtering because of muscle artifact and processed using AR1 and AR2 and reviewed by 26 EEG specialists. EEG readers assessed seizure-onset time, lateralization, and region, and specified confidence for each determination. The two methods were validated on the basis of the number of readers able to render assignments, confidence, the intra-class correlation (ICC), and agreement with other clinical findings. Results: Among the 23 seizures, two-thirds of the readers were able to delineate seizure-onset time in 10 of 23 using AR1, and 15 of 23 using AR2 (
