    Gravitational Waves from Axisymmetric, Rotational Stellar Core Collapse

    We have carried out an extensive set of two-dimensional, axisymmetric, purely-hydrodynamic calculations of rotational stellar core collapse with a realistic, finite-temperature nuclear equation of state and realistic massive star progenitor models. For each of the total number of 72 different simulations we performed, the gravitational wave signature was extracted via the quadrupole formula in the slow-motion, weak-field approximation. We investigate the consequences of variation in the initial ratio of rotational kinetic energy to gravitational potential energy and in the initial degree of differential rotation. Furthermore, we include in our model suite progenitors from recent evolutionary calculations that take into account the effects of rotation and magnetic torques. For each model, we calculate gravitational radiation wave forms, characteristic wave strain spectra, energy spectra, final rotational profiles, and total radiated energy. In addition, we compare our model signals with the anticipated sensitivities of the 1st- and 2nd-generation LIGO detectors coming on line. We find that most of our models are detectable by LIGO from anywhere in the Milky Way.Comment: 13 pages, 22 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ (v600, Jan. 2004).     El análisis de la marcha ha adquirido en los últimos tiempos un extraordinario desarrollo. En la actualidad la ciencia biomecánica ofrece un gran campo de actuación para el estudio de la patología de la deambulación, aplicando los conocimientos anatómicos, las leyes físicas y la alta tecnología (ordenadores, video, plataformas de fuerza, etc ...) En este estudio, se comparan por medio del análisis del movimiento en tres dimensiones, la dinámica y el comportamiento articular de la marcha normal y de la marcha en el paciente portador de protesis de rodilla unilateral y bilateral, para analizar si se aprecian diferencias en las características generales de la marcha y los cambios evolutivos que provocan estas diferencias y sus posibles repercusiones patológicas. La marcha normal tiene una fase de balanceo, seguida de una fase de apoyo con: choque de talón, apoyo del retropié, apoyo de la planta, rodadura sobre el borde extremo, despegue del talón, despegue del primer dedo. Esta dinámica se acompaña de balanceo de las extremidades superiores para mantener el equilibrio y compensar los momentos de inercia provocados por la zancada

    A novel binuclear hydrazone-based Cd(II) complex is a strong pro-apoptotic inducer with significant activity against 2D and 3D pancreatic cancer stem cells

    A novel binuclear Cd complex (1) with hydrazone-based ligand was prepared and characterized by spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. Complex 1 reveals a strong pro-apoptotic activity in both human, mammary adenocarcinoma cells (MCF-7) and pancreatic AsPC-1 cancer stem cells (CSCs). While apoptosis undergoes mostly caspase-independent, 1 stimulates the activation of intrinsic pathway with noteworthy down regulation of caspase-8 activity in respect to non-treated controls. Distribution of cells over mitotic division indicates that 1 caused DNA damage in both cell lines, which is confirmed in DNA interaction studies. Compared to 1, cisplatin (CDDP) does not achieve cell death in 2D cultured AsPC-1 cells, while induces different pattern of cell cycle changes and caspase activation in 2D cultured MCF-7 cells, implying that these two compounds do not share similar mechanism of action. Additionally, 1 acts as a powerful inducer of mitochondrial superoxide production with dissipated trans-membrane potential in the majority of the treated cells already after 6 h of incubation. On 3D tumors, 1 displays a superior activity against CSC model, and at 100 M induces disintegration of spheroids within 2 days of incubation. Fluorescence spectroscopy, along with molecular docking show that compound 1 binds to the minor groove of DNA. Compound 1 binds to the human serum albumin (HSA) showing that the HSA can effectively transport and store 1 in the human body. Thus, our current study strongly supports further investigations on antitumor activity of 1 as a drug candidate for the treatment of highly resistant pancreatic cancer

    Zn(II) complex with 2-quinolinecarboxaldehyde selenosemicarbazone: synthesis, structure, interaction studies with DNA/HSA, molecular docking and caspase-8 and-9 independent apoptose induction

    A new Zn(II)-based potential chemotherapeutic agent was synthesized from the ligand 2-quinolinecarboxaldehyde selenosemicarbazone (Hqasesc). Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the Zn(II) complex consists of a cation [Zn(Hqasesc)(2)](2+), two perchlorate anions and one ethanol solvent molecule. The interaction of calf thymus (CT) DNA and human serum albumin (HSA) with the Zn(II) complex was explored using absorption and emission spectral methods, and also has been supported by molecular docking studies. The complex has more affinity to minor DNA groove than major, with no significant intercalation. The HSA interaction studies of the complex revealed the quenching of the intrinsic fluorescence of the HSA through a static quenching mechanism. The antitumor activity of the ligand and the complex against pancreatic adenocarcinoma cell line (AsPC-1) and acute monocytic leukemia (THP-1) cells was evaluated. Both compounds are strong concentration-dependent apoptosis inducers in THP-1 cells. While Hqasesc in AsPC-1 cells induces apoptosis only at the highest concentration, treatment with the Zn complex shows a concentration-dependent apoptotic response, where the treated cells are arrested in the G1-to-S phase accompanied with extensive activation of caspase-8 and -9. These results indicate that the ligand and Zn(II) complex display cell phenotype specific activity

    Differential between Protein and mRNA Expression of CCR7 and SSTR5 Receptors in Crohn's Disease Patients

    Crohn's disease (CD) is a multifactorial chronic inflammatory bowel disease of unknown cause. The aim of the present study was to explore if mRNA over-expression of SSTR5 and CCR7 found in CD patients could be correlated to respective protein expression. When compared to healthy donors, SSTR5 was over-expressed 417 ± 71 times in CD peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). Flow cytometry experiments showed no correlation between mRNA and protein expression for SSTR5 in PBMCs. In an attempt to find a reason of such a high mRNA expression, SSTR5 present on CD PBMCs were tested and found as biologically active as on healthy cells. In biopsies of CD intestinal tissue, SSTR5 was not over-expressed but CCR7, unchanged in PBMCs, was over-expressed by 10 ± 3 times in the lamina propria. Confocal microscopy showed a good correlation of CCR7 mRNA and protein expression in CD intestinal biopsies. Our data emphasize flow and image cytometry as impossible to circumvent in complement to molecular biology so to avoid false interpretation on receptor expressions. Once confirmed by further large-scale studies, our preliminary results suggest a role for SSTR5 and CCR7 in CD pathogenesis

    Marine Microalgae: Promising Source for New Bioactive Compounds

    The study of marine natural products for their bioactive potential has gained strength in recent years. Oceans harbor a vast variety of organisms that offer a biological and chemical diversity with metabolic abilities unrivalled in terrestrial systems, which makes them an attractive target for bioprospecting as an almost untapped resource of biotechnological applications. Among them, there is no doubt that microalgae could become genuine cell factories for the biological synthesis of bioactive substances. Thus, in the course of inter-laboratory collaboration sponsored by the European Union (7th FP) into the MAREX Project focused on the discovery of novel bioactive compounds of marine origin for the European industry, a bioprospecting study on 33 microalgae strains was carried out. The strains were cultured at laboratory scale. Two extracts were prepared for each one (biomass and cell free culture medium) and, thus, screened to provide information on the antimicrobial, the anti-proliferative, and the apoptotic potential of the studied extracts. The outcome of this study provides additional scientific data for the selection of Alexandrium tamarensis WE, Gambierdiscus australes, Prorocentrum arenarium, Prorocentrum hoffmannianum, and Prorocentrum reticulatum (Pr-3) for further investigation and offers support for the continued research of new potential drugs for human therapeutics from cultured microalgae.Peer reviewe

    The structure of causal sets

    More often than not, recently popular structuralist interpretations of physical theories leave the central concept of a structure insufficiently precisified. The incipient causal sets approach to quantum gravity offers a paradigmatic case of a physical theory predestined to be interpreted in structuralist terms. It is shown how employing structuralism lends itself to a natural interpretation of the physical meaning of causal sets theory. Conversely, the conceptually exceptionally clear case of causal sets is used as a foil to illustrate how a mathematically informed rigorous conceptualization of structure serves to identify structures in physical theories. Furthermore, a number of technical issues infesting structuralist interpretations of physical theories such as difficulties with grounding the identity of the places of highly symmetrical physical structures in their relational profile and what may resolve these difficulties can be vividly illustrated with causal sets.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figure
