    Origin Identification and Quantitative Analysis of Honeys by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and Chemometric Techniques

    The combination of H-1 NMR spectroscopy and multivariate statistical analysis has become a promising method for the discrimination of food origins. In this paper, this method has been successfully employed to analyze 70 Chinese honey samples from eight botanic origins, three geographical origins, and five production dates. Thirty-three components in honey samples were detected and identified from their H-1 NMR spectra, and 20 of them were accurately quantified by comparing their integral area with that of internal standards with relaxation time correction. Nontargeted principal component analysis (PCA) has been applied to distinguish the honeys from different botanical and geographical origins. The variations of components in the honeys, including saccharides and all kind of amino and organic carboxylic acids, confirmed their clustering according to their origins in PCA scores plots. Orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) based on the NMR data for the different pairwise honey samples allows to identify the compositional variations contributed to geographical discrimination and storage time. Hence, NMR spectroscopy coupled with chemometric techniques offers an efficient tool for quality control of honey, and it could further serve to the classification, qualitative and quantitative control of other foods

    Focus on vulnerable populations and promoting equity in health service utilization ––an analysis of visitor characteristics and service utilization of the Chinese community health service

    Background Community health service in China is designed to provide a convenient and affordable primary health service for the city residents, and to promote health equity. Based on data from a large national study of 35 cities across China, we examined the characteristics of the patients and the utilization of community health institutions (CHIs), and assessed the role of community health service in promoting equity in health service utilization for community residents. Methods Multistage sampling method was applied to select 35 cities in China. Four CHIs were randomly chosen in every district of the 35 cities. A total of 88,482 visitors to the selected CHIs were investigated by using intercept survey method at the exit of the CHIs in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011. Descriptive analyses were used to analyze the main characteristics (gender, age, and income) of the CHI visitors, and the results were compared with that from the National Health Services Survey (NHSS, including CHIs and higher levels of hospitals). We also analyzed the service utilization and the satisfactions of the CHI visitors. Results The proportions of the children (2.4%) and the elderly (about 22.7%) were lower in our survey than those in NHSS (9.8% and 38.8% respectively). The proportion of the low-income group (26.4%) was apparently higher than that in NHSS (12.5%). The children group had the lowest satisfaction with the CHIs than other age groups. The satisfaction of the low-income visitors was slightly higher than that of the higher-income visitors. The utilization rate of public health services was low in CHIs. Conclusions The CHIs in China appears to fulfill the public health target of uptake by vulnerable populations, and may play an important role in promoting equity in health service utilization. However, services for children and the elderly should be strengthened

    Illegal births and legal abortions – the case of China

    BACKGROUND: China has a national policy regulating the number of children that a woman is allowed to have. The central concept at the individual level application is "illegal pregnancy". The purpose of this article is to describe and problematicize the concept of illegal pregnancy and its use in practice. METHODS: Original texts and previous published and unpublished reports and statistics were used. RESULTS: By 1979 the Chinese population policy was clearly a policy of controlling population growth. For a pregnancy to be legal, it has to be defined as such according to the family-level eligibility rules, and in some places it has to be within the local quota. Enforcement of the policy has been pursued via the State Family Planning (FP) Commission and the Communist Party (CP), both of which have a functioning vertical structure down to the lowest administrative units. There are various incentives and disincentives for families to follow the policy. An extensive system has been created to keep the contraceptive use and pregnancy status of all married women at reproductive age under constant surveillance. In the early 1990s FP and CP officials were made personally responsible for meeting population targets. Since 1979, abortion has been available on request, and the ratio of legal abortions to birth increased in the 1980s and declined in the 1990s. Similar to what happens in other Asian countries with low fertility rates and higher esteem for boys, both national- and local-level data show that an unnaturally greater number of boys than girls are registered as having been born. CONCLUSION: Defining a pregnancy as "illegal" and carrying out the surveillance of individual women are phenomena unique in China, but this does not apply to other features of the policy. The moral judgment concerning the policy depends on the basic question of whether reproduction should be considered as an individual or social decision

    The relations between metabolic variations and genetic evolution of different species

    Metabonomics has been applied in many bio-related scientific fields. Nevertheless, some animal research works are shown to fail when they are extended to humans. Therefore, it is essential to figure out suitable animal modeling to mimic human metabolism so that animal findings can serve humans. In this study, two kinds of commonly selected body fluids, serum and urine, from humans and various experimental animals were characterized by integration of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy with multivariate statistical analysis to identify the interspecies metabolic differences and similarities at a baseline physiological status. Our results highlight that the dairy cow and pig may be an optimal choice for transportation and biodistribution studies of drugs and that the Kunming (KM) mouse model may be the most effective for excretion studies of drugs, whereas the Sprague-Dawley (SD) rat could be the most suitable candidate for animal modeling under overall considerations. The biochemical pathways analyses further provide an interconnection between genetic evolution and metabolic variations, where species evolution most strongly affects microbial biodiversity and, consequently, has effects on the species-specific biological substances of biosynthesis and corresponding biological activities. Knowledge of the metabolic effects from species difference will enable the construction of better models for disease diagnosis, drug metabolism, and toxicology research. (C) 2015 Elsevier Inc.     The Turtle Garden: Tan Kah Kee’s last spiritual world

    This paper explores the role of diasporic subjects in China’s heritage-making through a case study of the Turtle Garden built by Tan Kah Kee in Xiamen, China. Tan is the first person with Overseas Chinese background who built museums in the P.R. China and has been regarded as a symbol of Overseas Chinese patriotism. This paper argues that the Turtle Garden, conceptualised as a postcolonial ‘carnivalesque’ space, is more than a civic museum for public education. It reflects the owner’s highly complex and sometimes conflicting museum outlook embedded in his life experience as a migrant, his encounter with (British) colonialism in Malaya, and integrated with his desire and despair about the Chinese Communist Party’s nation-building project in the 1950s. Rather than a sign of devotion to the socialist motherland as simplistically depicted in China’s discourse, the garden symbolises Tan’s last ‘spiritual world’ where he simultaneously engaged with soul-searching as a returned Overseas Chinese and alternative diasporic imagining of Chinese identities and nation. It brings to light the value of heritage-making outside centralised heritage discourses, and offers an invaluable analytical lens to disentangle the contested and ever shifting relationship between diasporic subjects, cultural heritage and nation-(re)building in the Chinese context and beyond

    Modeling the Total Allowable Area for Coastal Reclamation : a case study of Xiamen, China

The logic of the framework is to maximize the net benefits of coastal reclamation subject to a set of constraints. Various benefits and costs, including the ecological and environmental costs of coastal reclamation, are systematically quantified in the framework. Model simulations are developed using data from Tongan Bay of Xiamen.     Prevalence of atrial fibrillation in different socioeconomic regions of China and its association with stroke: Results from a national stroke screening survey

    Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained arrhythmia in clinical practice. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of AF in different socioeconomic regions of China and identify its association with stroke, through a national survey. Methods: The study included 726,451 adults aged ≥40 years who were participants of the China National Stroke Screening and Prevention Project, a nationally representative cross-sectional study. Stepwise logistic regression analyses were conducted to investigate the association between AF and stroke. Results: The overall standardized prevalence rate of AF was 2.31%. The prevalence of AF was highest in high-income regions (2.54%), followed by middle-income regions (2.33%), and lowest in low-income regions (1.98%). Women had a higher prevalence of AF than men in all regions (low-income regions, 2.30% vs 1.65%; middle-income regions, 2.78% vs 1.89%; and high-income regions, 2.96% vs 2.12%). Compared with urban residents, the prevalence of AF among rural residents was higher in low- (2.03% vs 1.91%) and middle-income regions (2.69% vs 1.90%), but lower in high-income regions (2.44% vs 2.58%). Participants with AF were more likely to have a stroke than those without AF (9.48% vs 2.26%). After adjusting for age, sex, location, overweight or obese, smoking, drinking, physical inactivity, hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and a family history of stroke, results showed that AF was significantly associated with stroke. Conclusions: The prevalence of AF has increased in recent years, and it was positively correlated with socioeconomic status, sex (women), location (rural areas), and stroke

    Litter production, seasonal pattern and nutrient return in seven natural forests compared with a plantation in southern China

    The amount and pattern of litterfall and its nutrient return were studied in seven natural forests of Schima superba Gardn. and Champ. (SCS), Castanopsis fabri Hance (CAF), Tsoongiodendron odorum Chun (TSO), Cinnamomum chekiangense Nakai (CIC), Altingia gracilipes Hemsl. (ALG), Castanopsis carlesii (Hemsl.) Hayata (CAC) and Pinus massoniana D. Don (PIM), and compared with that of an adjacent 29-year-old plantation of Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata Lamb.) (CUL) in Jianou, Fujian, China. Mean annual total litterfall over 3 years of observations varied from 4.63 Mg ha(-1) in the CUL to 8.85 Mg ha(-1) in the PIM; of this litterfall, the leaf contribution ranged from 62 to 73 per cent. Litterfall in the CAF, ALG and CAC showed an unimodal distribution pattern, while for the five other forests, the litterfall pattern was multi-peak. The rank order of the eight forests, according to nutrient return mass with the exception of P, was different from the order when rank was according to total mass of litterfall. The highest annual N, K and Ca returns from total litterfall were noticed in the TSO, the CAF and the CUL, respectively. The amounts of P and Mg potentially returned to the soil were the highest in the PIM. The leaf fraction provided greater potential returns of N, P, K, Ca and Mg to the soil than other litter fractions. The results of this study demonstrate that natural forests have a greater capability for maintaining site productivity than the monoculture coniferous plantation, due to higher amount of above-ground litter coupled with greater nutrient returns; therefore conservation of natural forests is recommended as a practical measure in forest management to realize sustainable development of forestry in mountainous areas of southern China
