    Detecting Android Malware by Analyzing Manifest Files

    The threat of Android malware has increased owing to the increasingpopularity of smartphones. Once an Android smartphone is infected with malware, theuser suffers from various damages, such as the theft of personal information stored in thesmartphones, the unintentional sending of short messages to premium-rate numberswithout the user’s knowledge, and the ability for the infected smartphones to be remotelyoperated and used for other malicious attacks. However, there are currently insufficientdefense mechanisms against Android malware. This study proposes a new method todetect Android malware. The new method analyzes only manifest files that are required inAndroid applications. It realizes a lightweight approach for detection, and its effectivenessis experimentally confirmed by employing real samples of Android malware. The resultshows that the new method can effectively detect Android malware, even when thesample is unknown

    Universal dark halo scaling relation for the dwarf spheroidal satellites

    Motivated by a recently found interesting property of the dark halo surface density within a radius, rmaxr_{\rm max}, giving the maximum circular velocity, VmaxV_{\rm max}, we investigate it for dark halos of the Milky Way's and Andromeda's dwarf satellites based on cosmological simulations. We select and analyze the simulated subhalos associated with Milky Way-sized dark halos and find that the values of their surface densities, ΣVmax\Sigma_{V_{\rm max}}, are in good agreement with those for the observed dwarf spheroidal satellites even without employing any fitting procedures. This implies that this surface density would not be largely affected by any baryonic feedbacks and thus universal. Moreover, all subhalos on the small scales of dwarf satellites are expected to obey the relation ΣVmaxVmax\Sigma_{V_{\rm max}}\propto V_{\rm max}, irrespective of differences in their orbital evolutions, host halo properties, and observed redshifts. Therefore, we find that the universal scaling relation for dark halos on dwarf galaxy mass scales surely exists and provides us important clues to understanding fundamental properties of dark halos. We also investigate orbital and dynamical evolutions of subhalos to understand the origin of this universal dark halo relation and find that most of subhalos evolve generally along the rmaxVmaxr_{\rm max}\propto V_{\rm max} sequence, even though these subhalos have undergone different histories of mass assembly and tidal stripping.     Spontaneously Ruptured Giant Splenic Cyst with Elevated Serum Levels of CA 19-9, CA 125 and Carcinoembryonic Antigen

    Splenic cyst is a relatively rare disease; however, the occurrence of complications associated with its rupture is even more rare. A 20-year-old female patient who had severe abdominal and left shoulder pain was admitted to our hospital. The patient's abdomen was hard and tender to the touch and she presented with a high fever. The patient's serum levels of the tumor markers carbohydrate antigen 19-9, cancer antigen 125 and carcinoembryonic antigen were high. Ultrasonography and computed tomography of the abdomen showed an 11-cm multilocular cystic lesion in the spleen and the presence of free intraperitoneal fluid. Peritonitis with ruptured splenic cyst was diagnosed, and the patient underwent an emergency laparotomy. The abdominal cavity was filled with purulent fluid. The cyst was localized to the spleen and had already ruptured. Total splenectomy and cyst resection were performed. The postoperative course was uneventful. The patient was discharged on day 9 following surgery. The histological findings showed the lesion to be a benign epidermoid cyst completely lined with inner stratified squamous epithelium with a capsule of connective tissue. In the immunostaining analyses, the squamous epithelium was positive for carcinoembryonic antigen. A ruptured splenic cyst causes sudden onset of severe peritonitis and elevation of serous tumor markers. An emergency operation is indicated as the treatment for a ruptured splenic cyst with peritonitis, after which a favorable outcome can be expected

    Tephrochronological study on the 1986-1987 eruptions of Izu-Oshima volcano, Japan

    Sequences and products of the Izu-Oshima 1986-1987 eruptions which started on November 15, 1986, were investigated tephrochronologically. The results are summarized as follows : 1) Summit eruptions (Crater A) During 15-20, Nov. 1986, Strombolian eruptions continued to make a lava lake from where lava flows spilt over and went down the slope of the central cone to the caldera floor (LA I~IV). Volcanic ash and scoria (TA-1~4) were dispersed to the eastern and western parts of the island. On 21 Nov., a little after the beginning of the fissure eruption (Craters B), Strombolian eruptions were reactivated and ejected large volcanic bombs and scoria (TA-5) from Crater A. On Dec. 18, 1986, small explosion occurred from the Crater A for three or four hours, ejecting a scoria fall (TA-6) and bomb. The level of the lava lake lowered about 5 meters. On Nov. 16, 1987, a phreatic explosion occurred to break the crust of the lava lake, and the lava drained back to the deep on Nov. 18. 2) Fissure eruptions in the caldera floor (Craters B) At 16 : 15, on Nov. 21, 1986, fissure eruptions (Craters B) started on the caldera floor and extended to the slope of the central cone. The eruptions became explosive one, generating lava fountains with the height of more than 1500 meters, with a high discharge rate of 8×106 ton/hour, producing pyroclastic cones and rootless (clastogenic) lava flows (LB I and III). Subplinian scoria falls were dispersed to west (TB-1) and east (TB-2). About 5 hours after the beginning, the activity waned to produce only volcanic ash (TB-3 and -6) and finer scoria falls (TB-4 and -5) and ceased on Nov. 23. A rheomorphic lava flow (LB II) occurred from the edge of the deformed cone on Nov. 23. 3) Fissure eruptions on the somma slope (Craters C) At 17 : 45, on Nov. 21, 1986, fissure eruptions occurred on the somma slope, and produced two lava flows (LC I and II), scoria cones, and vesicular scoria falls (TC-1 and -3) from the 11 craters. 4) The 1986 eruptions ejected 0.053 km3, 7.9×107 tons of lava and pyroclasts from A, B and C craters (Table 4)

    The Diagnostic Value of the Interstitial Biomarkers KL-6 and SP-D for the Degree of Fibrosis in Combined Pulmonary Fibrosis and Emphysema

    The combined pulmonary fibrosis and emphysema (CPFE) was reported first in 1990, but it has been comparatively underestimated until recently. Although the diagnostic findings of both emphysematous and fibrotic regions are detectable by high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) of the chest, the degree of progressive fibrosis, which increases with emphysematous lesions, is difficult to evaluate. In this study, we hypothesized that the biomarkers for pulmonary fibrosis, surfactant protein D (SP-D), and KL-6 would serve as good indicators of fibrotic lesions in CPFE. We recruited 46 patients who had been diagnosed in our hospital with both emphysema and fibrosis by their CT scan image from April 2003 to March 2008. The correlation among their pulmonary function tests, composite physiologic index (CPI), and the serum levels of SP-D and KL-6 was evaluated. We found a correlation between KL-6 and %VC, %TLC, or CPI and between SP-D and %VC or CPI. Interestingly, the combined product of KL-6 and SP-D (KL-6xSP-D) was found to highly correlate with %VC and %TLC or CPI. These results show that both KL-6 and SP-D, and especially the product of SP-D and KL-6, are good indicators of the presence of fibrotic lesions in the lungs of CPFE patients

    Thirty-eight CSF specimens obtained from 33 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) (20 definite, 18 probable; 20 active, 18 inactive) were subjected to the measurement of guanase activity, cell count and concentrations of total protein and Ig G. There was no difference in cell count and total protein concentration between MS and normal controls (n=14). The guanase activity, however, was significantly higher in MS as compared with normal controls (p<0.05). In addition, active MS revealed significantly elevated guanase activity, total protein and Ig G as compared with inactive MS (p<0.05). Serial guanase determinations together with Kurtzke\u27s expanded disability status scales in 5 MS patients supported the idea that CSF guanase activity reflects the disease activity more appropriately than other parameters in CSF

    Phase shift spectra of a fiber-microsphere system at the single photon level

    We succeeded in measuring phase shift spectra of a microsphere cavity coupled with a tapered fiber using a weak coherent probe light at the single photon level. We utilized a tapered fiber with almost no depolarization and constructed a very stable phase shift measurement scheme based on polarization analysis using photon counting. Using a very weak probe light (\bar{n} = 0:41), we succeeded in observing the transition in the phase shift spectrum between undercoupling and overcoupling (at gap distances of 500 and 100 nm, respectively).We also used quantum state tomography to obtain a 'purity spectrum'. Even in the overcoupling regime, the average purity was 0.982 \pm 0.024 (minimum purity: 0.892), suggesting that the coherence of the fiber-microsphere system was well preserved. Based on these results, we believe this system is applicable to quantum phase gates using single light emitters such as diamond nitrogen vacancy centers.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure
