Poster Abstract: MagoNode++ - A Wake-Up-Radio-Enabled Wireless Sensor Mote for Energy-Neutral Applications
The combination of low-power design, energy harvesting and ultra-low-power wake-up radios is paving the way for perpetual operation of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). In this work we present the MagoNode++, a novel WSN platform supporting energy harvesting and radio-triggered wake ups for energy- neutral applications. The MagoNode++ features an energy- harvesting subsystem composed by a light or thermoelectric harvester, a battery manager and a power manager module. It further integrates a state-of-the-art RF Wake-Up Receiver (WUR) that enables low-latency asynchronous communication, virtually eliminating idle listening at the main transceiver. Experimental results show that the MagoNode++ consumes only 2.8uA with the WUR in idle listening and the rest of the platform in sleep state, making it suitable for energy-constrained WSN scenarios and for energy-neutral applications
Co-designing for common values:creating hybrid spaces to nurture autonomous cooperation
This paper concerns the development of digitally-mediated technologies that value social cooperation as a common good rather than as a source of revenue and accumulation. The paper discusses the activities that shaped a European participatory design project which aims to develop a digital space that promotes and facilitates the âCommonfareâ, a complementary approach to social welfare. The paper provides and discusses concrete examples of design artifacts to address a key question about the role of co- and participatory design in developing hybrid spaces that nurture sharing and autonomous cooperation: how can co-design practices promote alternatives to the commodification of digitally-mediated cooperation? The paper argues for a need to focus on relational, social, political and ethical values, and highlights the potential power of co- and participatory design processes to achieve this. In summary, the paper proposes that only by re-asserting the centrality of shared values and capacities, rather than individual needs or problems, co-design can reposition itself thereby encouraging autonomous cooperation
Tendenze emergenti tra sintassi, interpunzione e testualitĂ nella narrativa contemporanea
This study aims to examine the current state of literary language in relation to the general
evolution of Italian, focusing mainly on the syntactic and punctuative field. The approach
is syntactic and functional, since for each phenomenon in presumed expansion or
evolution, the syntactic characteristics have been examined, but above all the functions
performed in the co-text. This method explains the meaning of the title "Emerging trends
between syntax, punctuation and textuality": textuality is, so to speak, the domain in
which all the syntactic structures and punctuative phenomena examined are reflected. The
work is therefore a study on linguistic variation conducted with the methods of text
linguistics, but also a stylistic analysis both between the two corpora compared and
especially within the sixteen recent novels that make up the main corpus
The indirect impact of COVID-19 large-scale containment measures on the incidence of community-acquired pneumonia in the elderly: a region-wide population-based study in Tuscany, Italy
OBJECTIVE: : to evaluate the indirect effect of COVID-19 large-scale containment measures on the incidence of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in the elderly during the first epidemic wave of COVID-19 in Tuscany, Italy. METHODS: : a population based study was carried out on data from the Tuscany healthcare system. The outcome measures were: hospitalization rate for CAP, severity of CAP hospitalizations, and outpatient consumptions of antibacterials for CAP in people aged 65 years and older. Outcome comparisons between corresponding periods of the 2020 and previous years were made. RESULTS: : Compared with the average of the corresponding periods of the previous three years, significant reductions in the weekly hospitalization rates for CAP were observed starting from the week in which the national containment measures were imposed until the end of the first wave of COVID-19 in July. All the antibacterial classes for CAP showed a significant decrease in their outpatient consumptions during the COVID-19 epidemic period. CONCLUSIONS: : The implementation of large-scale COVID-19 containment measures likely reduced the incidence of CAP in the elderly during the first wave of COVID-19 pandemic. Taking into account this indirect impact of pandemic containment measures on respiratory tract infections may improve the planning of health services during a pandemic
Economic Impact of Inter-Regional Health Mobility In The Oldest European Administrative Region: A Starting Point For Changing Organizational Model?
Objectives: The aim of this study is to evaluate the inter-regional mobility expenditures,
with particular reference to oncology, in Liguria Region.
Study design: A descriptive analysis of inter-regional mobility expenditures from 2008
to 2015 was carried out.
Methods: The analysis involved a detailed assessment of global balance of interregional
health mobility by means the DRGs; the flow of specialist outpatient and
pharmaceutical was also used.
Results: Since 2008 until 2012 an increase of negative balance of global healthcare
expenditure in Liguria Region was observed [34.7 € mill (2008) and 62.3 € mill (2012)];
subsequently a quite stable trend was recorded between 2012 and 2015 [ranging between
59.8 € mill (2013) and 63.2 € mill (2014)]. The passive mobility was 15.1% on the total
spending for hospital acute care in 2012 and a similar value was detected in 2015 (15.2%).
The higher costs for passive mobility were attributable to the surgical DRGs (69.4% in 2012
and 69.8% in 2015) with a double estimate of the expenditure in comparison with medical
ones (2012: 99.4 € mill vs 43.8 € mill, \u394= 55.6 € mill; 2015: 96.6 € mill vs 41.9 € mill, \u394= 54.7
€ mill). The highest cost sources in the process of passive mobility are the surgical areas,
particularly the surgical hospitalizations for orthopaedic and cardiologic interventions. The
spending analysis for oncologic DRG, divided into surgical and medical for passive and
active mobility, showed that the surgical DRG determined a negative balance of 3.8 € mill
in 2012 and 4.3 € mill in 2015, while the medical DRG showed a positive balance of 0.5 €
mill in 2012 and 0.7 € mill in 2015.
Conclusions: Our evaluation highlights that the inter-regional mobility for hospital
acute care is the most relevant issue for the economic regional balance and reveals an
important flow of patients moving from Liguria Region to neighbouring regions. As the
equity of access and distribution of the supply of care remains a priority of Regional Health
System, the active mobility in oncologic field could be a marker of quality health planning
Quantum computational logic with mixed states
In this paper we solve the problem how to axiomatize a system of quantum computational gates known as the Poincaré irreversible quantum computational system. A Hilbert-style calculus is introduced obtaining a strong completeness theorem.Fil: Freytes Solari, Hector Carlos. Universidad Nacional de Rosario; Argentina. Seamounts as hot-spots of large pelagic aggregations
The distribution of four top predators in the Tyrrhenian Sea, a sub-basin of the Mediterranean Sea, was investigated by means of random forest regression considering depth, distance from the coast, seafloor slope, and distance from seamounts as habitat descriptors on a 2x2ânautical mile regular grid. RF results are processed to estimate variable importance and model performance. Random forest architecture reached optimal sensitivity and specificity, thus providing a consistent support tool for identifying suitable habitats. The considered species are characterized as having patched suitable habitats with a number of hot-spot areas where the different species' habitats overlap. These hot-spot areas' locations correspond to those of specific seamounts identifying the attraction effect of these topographic structures. The mean features typifying the most attractive seamounts are investigated and found to be shallow peak and base depths but wide base area and high relative elevation
Vitality and Growth of the Threatened Lichen Lobaria pulmonaria (L.) Hoffm. in Response to Logging and Implications for Its Conservation in Mediterranean Oak Forests
Lobaria pulmonaria (L.) Hoffm.: The Multifaceted Suitability of the Lung Lichen to Monitor Forest Ecosystems
Lobaria pulmonaria (L.) Hoffm. is a tripartite, broad-lobed foliose lichen usually found on bark and on epiphytic and epilithic mosses in humid forests. Currently, the species is threatened in most European countries because of its sensitivity to environmental alterations. In this paper, a total of 107 previous studies across more than 50 years were analysed to gain insight into the multiple roles that L. pulmonaria plays in forest habitats, specifically relating to ecosystem services and as environmental bioindicator. Content analysis was employed to systematically characterise and classify the existing papers on the functions performed by L. pulmonaria into several groups mostly based on research topic and scope. Two main types of ecosystem services (N2 fixation and feeding) offered by L. pulmonaria have been identified, with varying research aims and types of parameters measured in the studies. Two aspects of current biomonitoring applications using L. pulmonaria in forest habitats (concerning atmospheric pollution and forest management) were analysed, and
it was found that the number of related studies increased significantly in recent years. Finally, the current practices of monitoring using L. pulmonaria as a biological indicator are discussed, and recommendations are provided
New bioelectrical impedance vector references and phase angle centile curves in 4,367 adults: The need for an urgent update after 30 years
Background & aims: The bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA) represents a qualitative analysis of body composition. The vector, defined by resistance (R) and reactance (Xc) standardized by stature, can be evaluated compared to the 50%,75%, and 95% tolerance ellipses representative of the reference populations. The tolerance ellipses for healthy adults have been provided in 1995 and were developed by mixing underage, adult, and elderly subjects, possibly misrepresenting the actual adult population. The current multicentric, cross-sectional study aimed to provide new tolerance ellipses specific for the general adult population and as a secondary aim to present centile curves for the bioelectrical phase angle. Methods: R, Xc, and phase angle were measured in 2137 and 2230 males and females using phase-sensitive foot-to-hand analyzers at 50 kHz. A minimum of 35 subjects were included for each sex and age category from 18 to 65 years. Results: The new mean vectors showed a leftward shift on the R-Xc graph with respect to the former reference values (males: F = 75.3; p < 0.001; females: F = 36.6, p < 0.001). The results provided new 3rd, 5th, 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, 90th, 95th, and 97th percentile curves for phase angle, identifying time point phases of decrement (males: -0.03° per year at 33.0-51.0 years and -0.05° per year after 51 years; females: -0.03° per year from 37.2 to 57.9 years). Conclusions: Compared to the original references, the new data are characterized by a different distribution within the R-Xc graph with a higher phase angle. Thirty years after the BIVA invention, the current study presents new tolerance ellipses and phase angle reference values for the adult population
