DesignQuasi-experimental, open, multicenter before-after study.Setting14 primary care physician's practices (7 rural, 7 urban) in the province of Córdoba (Spain).Participants306 patients of both sexes, recruited with a case-finding strategy, who consumed ≥35 (men) or ≥21 (women) IU per week, or who had alcohol dependence syndrome (ADS) (MALTS score O≥11).InterventionsAll patients were offered brief counseling to reduce drinking, and all were followed to evaluate their status 3 months, 1 year and 2 years later.Main measuresThe response variable was selfreported alcohol consumption together with normal GGT values or confirmation of alcohol consumption by a relative. The results were subjected to intention-to-treat analysis.ResultsOf the 306 patients included in the study, 95.1% were men and 78.4% had ADS. After 2 years 38.89% (95% CI, 32.2%-44.3%) had attained their treatment goal: 23.85% were in complete abstinence, and 15.0% consumed moderate amounts of alcohol below the limit considered to indicate risk. Starting excessive consumption at less than 16 years of age (odds ratio [OR], 3.0885), living in a slum (OR, 3.2103), smoking (OR, 1.7187), and a positive CAGE test (OR, 1.9949) were associated with failure of the intervention (P<.05).ConclusionsCounseling provided by the family doctor was highly effective under the usual conditions of general practice, both for patients with excessive alcohol consumption and for patients with con ADS
La Cuevona de Avín (Avín, Asturias, North Spain): A new Late Pleistocene site in the lower valley of the River Güeña
The archaeological investigations carried out in the last twenty years in the Lower Valley of the River Güeña (Asturias, central part of northern Spain) have documented different prehistoric sites, particularly with Middle and Upper Palaeolithic occupations. This paper presents the first results of the archaeological excavation carried out in the cave of La Cuevona de Avín. From the systematic study of the biotic and abiotic remains, a total of three occupation phases (Phases 1 to 3) have been determined, dated in the Late Pleistocene. The lithic studies indicate the use of local raw materials (mainly quartzite), but also regional ones (different types of flint) in the whole sequence. Retouched implements are typologically representative only during the Upper Magdalenian (Phase II) and use-wear analysis indicates the manufacture and use of artefacts in situ during this phase. Archaeozoological studies reveal continuity in subsistence strategies throughout the sequence, noting specialization in red deer hunting during the Azilian (Phase I), and more diversified prey in the older phases of the sequence. © 2022 The Author(s
A determination of the Spectra of Galactic components observed by WMAP
WMAP data when combined with ancillary data on free-free, synchrotron and
dust allow an improved understanding of the spectrum of emission from each of
these components. Here we examine the sky variation at intermediate latitudes
using a cross-correlation technique. In particular, we compare the observed
emission in 15 selected sky regions to three ``standard'' templates.
The free-free emission of the diffuse ionised gas is fitted by a well-known
spectrum at K and Ka band, but the derived emissivity corresponds to a mean
electron temperature of ~4000-5000K. This is inconsistent with estimates from
galactic HII regions. The origin of the discrepancy is unclear.
The anomalous emission associated with dust is clearly detected in most of
the 15 fields studied; it correlates well with the Finkbeiner et al. model 8
predictions (FDS8) at 94 GHz, with an effective spectral index between 20 and
60GHz of -2.85. Furthermore, the emissivity varies by a factor of ~2 from cloud
to cloud. A modestly improved fit to the anomalous dust at K-band is provided
by modulating the template by an estimate of the dust colour temperature,
specifically FDS8*T^n. We find a preferred value n~1.6.
The synchrotron emission steepens between GHz frequencies and the WMAP bands.
There are indications of spectral index variations across the sky but the
current data are not precise enough to accurately quantify this from region to
region. Our analysis of the WMAP data indicates strongly that the
dust-correlated emission at the low WMAP frequencies has a spectrum which is
compatible with spinning dust; we find no evidence for a synchrotron component
correlated with dust (abridged).Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, revised version uses cross-correlation method

Some doubts on the validity of the foreground Galactic contribution subtraction from microwave anisotropies
The Galactic foreground contamination in CMBR anisotropies, especially from
the dust component, is not easily separable from the cosmological or
extragalactic component. In this paper, some doubts will be raised concerning
the validity of the methods used to date to remove Galactic dust emission in
order to show that none of them achieves its goal.
First, I review the recent bibliography on the topic and discuss critically
the methods of foreground subtraction: the cross-correlation with templates,
analysis assuming the spectral shape of the Galactic components, the "maximum
entropy method", "internal linear combination", and "wavelet-based high
resolution fitting of internal templates". Second, I analyse the galactic
latitude dependence from WMAP data. The frequency dependence is discussed with
the data in the available literature. The result is that all methods of
subtracting the Galactic contamination are inaccurate. The galactic latitude
dependence analysis or the frequency dependence of the anisotropies in the
range 50-250 GHz put a constraint on the maximum Galactic contribution in the
power spectrum to be less than a ~10% (68% C. L.) for a ~1 degree scale, and
possibly higher for larger scales.
The origin of most of the signal in the CMBR anisotropies is not Galactic. In
any case, the subtraction of the Galaxy is not accurate enough to allow a
"precision Cosmology"; other sources of contamination (extragalactic, solar
system) are also present.Comment: 24 pages, 1 figure, accepted to be published in J. Astrophys. Ast
Phenolic and furanic compounds of Portuguese chestnut and French, American and Portuguese oak wood chips
Botanical species used on aging process must
be wisely and judiciously chosen, and for this selection, a
basic knowledge of the chemical composition of woods is
warranted. Aiming to contribute to extend the knowledge
of the chemical composition of several wood species useful
for enological purposes, we have focused our studies on
Portuguese chestnut and French, American and Portuguese
oak chips. The profile of low molecular weight phenolic
composition of these chips was achieved, using an optimized
extraction method based on pressurized liquid
extraction, followed by the quantification of phenolic acids,
phenolic aldehydes and furanic derivatives by high-performance
liquid chromatography (HPLC-DAD). The
identification of those compounds was also confirmed by
LC-DAD/ESI-MS. This study allowed the determination of
the low molecular phenolic composition of Portuguese
chestnut and French, American and Portuguese oak wood.
According to our results, the influence of the botanical
species seems to be more relevant than the geographic
origin of the wood species
