La collezione Layard nel catalogo dattiloscritto 1896

    Get PDF
Sir Austen Henry Layard (1817-1894) was an archeologist, diplomat, writer, and a great art lover, especially passionate about Italian painting. This article aims to present its collection through the typewritten catalogue composed by Lady Enid Layard in 1896 and now housed at the library of the Polo Museale Veneziano (Venice). The compared analysis of this catalogue, and of the Layard papers at the National Gallery Archive (London), together with Lady Layard’s diary, and Sir Henry’s comments, leads the author to the reconstruction of some aspects of the collection, such as the acquisitions, restorations, and the display of the pictures at Ca’ Cappello, at the end of the Nineteenth century

An Art World Insider: Austen Henry Layard and the Nineteenth-Century European Art Trade

In the lively context of the European art market of mid-nineteenth century, Austen Henry Layard (1817-1894) played an active role both as a private collector and advisor, and equally as a trustee and unofficial travelling agent for London museums. Thanks to his extensive travels throughout Europe and the Middle East, he became acquainted with the most eminent figures of the art world and was able to purchase a great assortment of art objects, ranging from Cypriot pottery to Renaissance paintings, from Spanish religious artefacts to Burgundian tapestry. In order to analyse the cultural and economical implications of these relocations, this paper examines the relations of this net- work within the European connoisseurship, the formation of Layard’s personal collection and his contributions to private and public institutions

    Get PDF
This article describes the trajectories of collaboration experienced by three individuals in three different roles (informant, research assistant, and supervisor) in two research projects about English as a foreign language reading in a higher education context in Argentina. Data come from reflection logs and retrospective narratives written by them from 2009 to 2016 which were analyzed using content analysis, focusing on a continuum of collaboration. The article aligns with the critique of the discourse of “newer researcher” as a linear developmental trajectory as it illustrates the participants’ fluid, critical, complex, and personally relevant pathways. Placed within the debate regarding the affordances, complexities and challenges of the measured university, this research contributes perspectives from a peripheral setting generally underrepresented in the literature. Fil: Porto, Melina. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Identification of Cellular Genes Targeted by KSHV-Encoded MicroRNAs

    Get PDF
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are 19 to 23 nucleotide–long RNAs that post-transcriptionally regulate gene expression. Human cells express several hundred miRNAs which regulate important biological pathways such as development, proliferation, and apoptosis. Recently, 12 miRNA genes have been identified within the genome of Kaposi sarcoma–associated herpesvirus; however, their functions are still unknown. To identify host cellular genes that may be targeted by these novel viral regulators, we performed gene expression profiling in cells stably expressing KSHV-encoded miRNAs. Data analysis revealed a set of 81 genes whose expression was significantly changed in the presence of miRNAs. While the majority of changes were below 2-fold, eight genes were down-regulated between 4- and 20-fold. We confirmed miRNA-dependent regulation for three of these genes and found that protein levels of thrombospondin 1 (THBS1) were decreased >10-fold. THBS1 has previously been reported to be down-regulated in Kaposi sarcoma lesions and has known activity as a strong tumor suppressor and anti-angiogenic factor, exerting its anti-angiogenic effect in part by activating the latent form of TGF-β. We show that reduced THBS1 expression in the presence of viral miRNAs translates into decreased TGF-β activity. These data suggest that KSHV-encoded miRNAs may contribute directly to pathogenesis by down-regulation of THBS1, a major regulator of cell adhesion, migration, and angiogenesis

Spontaneous splenic rupture in a teenager as first manifestation of acute myeloid leukemia: Case report and literature review

    Get PDF
Spontaneous splenic rupture is a well-known, but rare life-threatening complication of hematological malignancies. We describe the case of a 12-year-old boy with a 5-day history of fever and successively left upper quadrant abdominal pain and sudden clinical deterioration necessitating emergency splenectomy. On arrival, a blood dyscrasia was postoperatively confirmed as acute myeloid leukemia. Cases of atraumatic rupture in diseased spleens are widely reported and pathological rupture of the spleen is a rare, but well recognized complication in hematological malignancies. This case report represents a rare and fatal initial presentation of acute myeloid leukemia in an adolescent. Because of the rarity of atraumatic splenic rupture, a high index of clinical suspicion must be maintained in patients with left upper quadrant pain and abnormal differential count on peripheral blood smear
