    Analysis of antenal sensilla patterns of Rhodnius prolixus from Colombia and Venezuela

    Antennal sensilla patterns were used to analyze population variation of domestic Rhodnius prolixus from six departments and states representing three biogeographical regions of Colombia and Venezuela. Discriminant analysis of the patterns of mechanoreceptors and of three types of chemoreceptors on the pedicel and flagellar segments showed clear differentiation between R. prolixus populations east and west of the Andean Cordillera. The distribution of thick and thin-walled trichoids on the second flagellar segment also showed correlation with latitude, but this was not seen in the patterns of other sensilla. The results of the sensilla patterns appear to be reflecting biogeographic features or population isolation rather than characters associated with different habitats and lend support to the idea that domestic R. prolixus originated in the eastern region of the Andes.Fil: Esteban, Lyda.     Cultural differences in personality and aggressive behavior in intimate partner violence offenders: a comparison of English and Spanish offenders

    Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a ubiquitous and serious problem, the prevalence of which varies greatly around the world. Previous research shows that cultural factors interact with personality and that this interaction influences cognitions, attitudes, and behaviors that are related to personal and individual styles of resolving conflicts. In relation to this, the present study has three aims: comparing the self-reported IPV (physical, psychological and sexual) of English and Spanish offenders, comparing the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory III (MCMI-III) scores of the two groups, and examining the association between country of origin, psychopathology, and IPV. The sample consists of 147 IPV offenders (80 English and 67 Spanish). The measures used were the MCMI-III and the Conflict Tactics Scale 2. The Mann−Whitney U tests were used to compare the English and Spanish sample, and independent logistic regressions were used to examine the relationship between personality patterns, psychopathology and culture, and IPV. Higher frequencies of physical and psychological aggression were found in the English group compared with the Spanish group as well as several differences in personality patterns and psychopathology between the groups. Some MCMI-III subscales also interact with nationality and predict physical and psychological aggression. The relevance of these results for intervention is discussed. </jats:p

    Stretched exponential relaxation for growing interfaces in quenched disordered media

    We study the relaxation for growing interfaces in quenched disordered media. We use a directed percolation depinning model introduced by Tang and Leschhorn for 1+1-dimensions. We define the two-time autocorrelation function of the interface height C(t',t) and its Fourier transform. These functions depend on the difference of times t-t' for long enough times, this is the steady-state regime. We find a two-step relaxation decay in this regime. The long time tail can be fitted by a stretched exponential relaxation function. The relaxation time is proportional to the characteristic distance of the clusters of pinning cells in the direction parallel to the interface and it diverges as a power law. The two-step relaxation is lost at a given wave length of the Fourier transform, which is proportional to the characteristic distance of the clusters of pinning cells in the direction perpendicular to the interface. The stretched exponential relaxation is caused by the existence of clusters of pinning cells and it is a direct consequence of the quenched noise.Comment: 4 pages and 5 figures.     Leopold Kohr (1909-1994) was a professor at the Department of Economics –Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Puerto Rico´s Rio Piedras campus–, from 1955 to 1973. His intellectual contributions were always focused on a philosophy regarding size in which, together with a severe criticism toward gigantism, the emphasis was placed on the possibilities of political units of moderate scale. In this article, Professor Kohr´s hardly conventional ideas are linked with recent contributions made in the field of the economy of small countries. Emphasis is placed on the fact that institutional and technological changes force the reconceptualization of economic size. This provides the framework to look at the Puerto Rican experience from an institutional perspective, an experience which is characterized in this article as one in which economic growth has resulted in hypertrophy.El profesor Leopold Kohr (1909-1994) dictó cátedra en el Departamento de Economía de la Facultad de Ciencias Sociales del Recinto de Río Piedras (UPR) del año 1955 al 1973. Sus aportes intelectuales siempre estuvieron centrados en una filosofía sobre el tamaño en la que, junto a una crítica severa al gigantismo, se destacaban las posibilidades de las unidades políticas de escala modesta. En este artículo se enlazan las ideas poco convencionales del profesor Kohr con recientes contribuciones en el campo de la economía de países pequeños. Se subraya el hecho de que los cambios institucionales y tecnológicos obligan a la reconceptualización del tamaño económico. Esto provee el marco para, desde una perspectiva institucionalista, darle una mirada a la experiencia de Puerto Rico, la que aquí se caracteriza como una en la que se ha conjugado el crecimiento económico con la hipertrofia

    The pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children and adolescents: protocol for a systematic review and network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

    [Background] Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders of children and adolescents, with a significant impact on health services and the community in terms of economic and social burdens. The objective of this systematic review will be to evaluate the comparative efficacy and safety of pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments in children and adolescents with ADHD.[Methods] Searches involving PubMed/MEDLINE and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews will be used to identify related systematic reviews and relevant randomized trials. Search results will be supplemented by reports from the regulatory and health technology agencies, clinical trials registers and by data requested from trialists and/or pharmaceutical companies. We will consider studies evaluating pharmacological interventions (e.g. stimulants, non-stimulants, antidepressants), psychological interventions (e.g. behavioural interventions, cognitive training and neurofeedback) and complementary and alternative medicine interventions (e.g. dietary interventions, supplement with fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, aminoacids, herbal treatment, homeopathy, and mind-body interventions including massage, chiropractic, acupuncture, yoga, meditation, Tai chi). Eligible control conditions will be placebo, waitlist, no treatment and usual care. Randomized controlled trials of a minimum of 3 weeks duration will be included. The primary outcomes of interest will be the proportion of patients who responded to treatment and who dropped out of the allocated treatment, respectively. Secondary outcomes will include treatment discontinuation due to adverse events, as well as the occurrences of serious adverse events and specific adverse events (decreased weight, anorexia, insomnia and sleep disturbances, anxiety, syncope and cardiovascular events). Two reviewers will independently screen references identified by the literature search, as well as potentially relevant full-text articles in duplicate. Data will be abstracted and risk of bias will be appraised by two team members independently. Conflicts at all levels of screening and abstraction will be resolved through discussion. Random-effects pairwise meta-analyses and Bayesian network meta-analyses will be conducted where appropriate. .[Discussion] This systematic review and network meta-analysis will compare the efficacy and safety of treatments used for ADHD in children and adolescents. The findings will assist patients, clinicians and healthcare providers to make evidence-based decisions regarding treatment selection.Specific funding is provided by the Alicia Koplowitz Foundation (2014 to 2016).     TangiWheel: A widget for manipulating collections on tabletop displays supporting hybrid Input modality

    In this paper we present TangiWheel, a collection manipulation widget for tabletop displays. Our implementation is flexible, allowing either multi-touch or interaction, or even a hybrid scheme to better suit user choice and convenience. Different TangiWheel aspects and features are compared with other existing widgets for collection manipulation. The study reveals that TangiWheel is the first proposal to support a hybrid input modality with large resemblance levels between touch and tangible interaction styles. Several experiments were conducted to evaluate the techniques used in each input scheme for a better understanding of tangible surface interfaces in complex tasks performed by a single user (e.g., involving a typical master-slave exploration pattern). The results show that tangibles perform significantly better than fingers, despite dealing with a greater number of interactions, in situations that require a large number of acquisitions and basic manipulation tasks such as establishing location and orientation. However, when users have to perform multiple exploration and selection operations that do not require previous basic manipulation tasks, for instance when collections are fixed in the interface layout, touch input is significantly better in terms of required time and number of actions.     Use of Single Board Computers as Smart Sensors in the Manufacturing Industry

    The continuously growing presence of cyber-physical systems in the industry, especially in the field of processes automation and control, represents the paradigm of the so called fourth industrial revolution, in which the systems are smarter, faster and more optimized by means of artificial intelligence, control systems and sensors networks. The presence of ICT and automation systems guarantees energy and other resources efficiency along the whole value chain of industrial processes. Especially important is the case of the smart sensors, in which a conventional sensor is equipped with interfacing methodologies for signal processing and decision making.
