Interspecific interactions among functionally diverse frugivores and their outcomes for plant reproduction: a new approach based on camera-trap data and tailored null models
Research ArticleThe study of plant-frugivore interactions is essential to understand the ecology and evolution
of many plant communities. However, very little is known about how interactions among frugivores
indirectly affect plant reproductive success. In this study, we examined direct interactions
among vertebrate frugivores sharing the same fruit resources. Then, we inferred
how the revealed direct interspecific interactions could lead to indirect (positive or negative)
effects on reproductive success of fleshy fruited plants. To do so, we developed a new analytical
approach that combines camera trap data (spatial location, visitor species, date and
time, activity) and tailored null models that allowed us to infer spatial-temporal interactions
(attraction, avoidance or indifference) between pairs of frugivore species. To illustrate our
approach, we chose to study the system composed by the Mediterranean dwarf palm, Chamaerops
humilis, the Iberian pear tree, Pyrus bourgaeana, and their shared functionally
diverse assemblages of vertebrate frugivores in a Mediterranean area of SW Spain. We first
assessed the extent to which different pairs of frugivore species tend to visit the same or different
fruiting individual plants. Then, for pairs of species that used the same individual
plants, we evaluated their spatial-temporal relationship. Our first step showed, for instance,
that some prey frugivore species (e.g. lagomorphs) tend to avoid those C. humilis individuals
that were most visited by their predators (e.g. red foxes). Also, the second step revealed
temporal attraction between large wild and domestic frugivore ungulates (e.g. red deer,
cows) and medium-sized frugivores (e.g. red foxes) suggesting that large mammals could
facilitate the C. humilis and P. bourgaeana exploitation to other smaller frugivores by making
fruits more easily accessible. Finally, our results allowed us to identify direct interaction pathways,
that revealed how the mutualistic and antagonistic relations between animal associates
derived into indirect effects on both plants seed dispersal success. For instance, we
found that large-sized seed predators (e.g. ungulates) had a direct positive effect on the likelihood
of visits by legitimate seed dispersers (e.g. red foxes) to both fleshy fruited plants.
Then, seed predators showed an indirect positive effect on the plants’ reproductive Our new analytical approach provides a widely applicable framework for further studies on
multispecies interactions in different systems beyond plant-frugivore interactions, including
plant-pollinator interactions, the exploitation of plants by herbivores, and the use of carcasses
by vertebrate scavengersinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Potential protective role of reactive astrocytes in the periventricular parenchyma in congenital hydrocephalus
Background
Cerebrospinal fluid accumulation in hydrocephalus produces an elevation of intraventricular pressure with pathological consequences on the periventricular brain parenchyma including ischemia, oedema, oxidative stress, and accumulation of metabolic waste products. Here we studied in the hyh mouse, an animal model of congenital hydrocephalus, the role of reactive astrocytes in this clinical degenerative condition.
Materials and Methods
Wild type and hydrocephalic hyh mice at 30 days of postnatal age were used. Three metabolites related to the oxidative and neurotoxic conditions were analysed in ex vivo samples (glutathione, glutamine and taurine) using High Resolution Magic Angle Spinning (HR-MAS). Glutathione synthetase and peroxidase, glutamine synthetase, kidney-type glutaminase (KGA), and taurine/taurine transporter were immunolocated in brain sections.
Results
Levels of the metabolites were remarkably higher in hydrocephalic conditions. Glutathione peroxidase and synthetase were both detected in the periventricular reactive astrocytes and neurons. Taurine was mostly found free in the periventricular parenchyma and in the reactive astrocytes, and the taurine transporter was mainly present in the neurons located in such regions. Glutamine synthetase was found in reactive astrocytes. Glutaminase was also detected in the reactive astrocytes and in periventricular neurons. These results suggest a possible protective response of reactive astrocytes against oxidative stress and neurotoxic conditions.
Conclusions
Astrocyte reaction seems to trigger an anti-oxidative and anti-neurotoxic response in order to ameliorate pathological damage in periventricular areas of the hydrocephalic mice.Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tech. PI15-00619 to AJJ
Effect of monotherapy with darunavir/ cobicistat on viral load and semen quality of HIV-1 patients
Many patients previously using darunavir/ritonavir (DRV/r) (800/100mg) have switched to
darunavir/cobicistat (DRV/C) (800/150 mg) either as part of triple therapy (ART) or as monotherapy
with DRV (mDRV). The latter approach continues to be used in some countries for
patients receiving long-term treatment. However, to date, the behaviour of DRV/C in the
seminal compartment has not been analysed. This study explores how the combination
behaves in monotherapy, with respect to the control of viral load and seminal quality. To this
end, we studied 20 patients who were treated with mDRV/C after previous treatment with
mDRV/r for at least 24 weeks. A viral load control in seminal plasma similar to that published
in the literature was observed after 24 weeks of treatment with mDRV/C (viral load positivity
in 20% of patients). Similarly, semen quality was confirmed (70% normozoospermic) in
patients treated with this formulation, as has previously been reported for ART and mDRV/r.
The DRV levels measured in seminal plasma were above EC50, regardless of whether the
seminal viral load was positive or negative. We conclude that this mDRV/C co-formulation
behaves like mDRV/r in seminal plasma in terms of viral load control and semen quality
DETERMINATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL PARAMETERS BASED ON ARDUINO BASED LOW-COST SENSORS
Taking into account that the age of structures is closely connected to their energy consumption, the monitoring of structures
is a crucial task for engineers. This article deals with application of Arduino based low-cost sensors for environmental
monitoring of buildings. To do so, open source platform Arduino as well as four environmental sensors, DHT22, have been
used for measuring variation of temperature and humidity. In order to check accuracy of the utilized data acquisition
system, statistical approach was used to check the repeatability and discrepancy of the recorded data. Statistical calculations
indicate that the sensor is more accurate in terms of measuring temperature rather than humidity one since discrepancy of
the temperature parameter is less than the humidity one. The maximum range of standard deviation derived for temperature
and humidity parameters are less than 0.13 and 1.33 respectively.
The current advances in Smart Cities technology trend towards the creation of complex and
interconnected systems, through the application of new software tools and devices based on
the Internet of Things, Big Data and so on. However, the cost of certain elements and devices
(such as monitoring of environmental and confort parameters) is oftenly very high, leading to
exclusive procedures and being used only in relatively singular works or in those in which they
have been found, or is foreseeable, to find pathologies. From this point emerges the need for
proposing the development of versatile and reliable monitoring protocols from open source
digital prototyping platforms and the use of low-cost sensors, in order to lay aside that
exclusivity. Thus, it could be possible to contribute to the expansion of the field of application to
get greater efficiency and sustainability together.
This paper demosnstrates and shows the most effective options of interoperability of low-cost
sensors with BIM models to make possible the development of BIM 7D stage, by monitoring
thermal data and synchronizing and live updating in a virtual model. This will make possible
more accurate simulations, as well as the improving decision-making process over the entire
lifecycle of the infrastructure.
