Data on the diagnosis of the management of the primary waste from electrical and electronic equipment in health care institutions in Barranquilla, Colombia

    Get PDF
Economic and technological development advances exponentially, and the implementation of new technologies in the health sector has become a source of waste for electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). Electrical and electronic equipment must be replaced periodically, either due to a technological update or to improve medical treatments, which ultimately leads to the generation of this type of waste. This work aimed to conduct exploratory research on the current situation of the handling of this type of waste in Barranquilla, Colombia, considering the limited information related to the management of biomedical WEEE in the city. Sixty health care institutions (HCIs), including hospitals and clinics, odontological centres and ophthalmological centres, participated favourably in the surveys concerning the management of WEEE. Through this work, it was possible to establish a working staff level of knowledge on WEEE disposal and the framework for the management and temporary collection of this waste. Therefore, the data are useful for proposing strategies for the integral management of electrical and electronic waste in both small and large populations

Socioeconomic determinants of economic reintegration in Colombia: evidence from a Probit Model

    Get PDF
This paper seeks to determine what socioeconomic aspects influence the economic reintegration process of former combatants from illegal armed groups in Bolívar, Colombia. For this purpose, an analysis of some variables such as age, gender, educational level, marital status, former group, family income and type of demobilization is carried out. Methodologically, a two-stage econometric binary choice model (Probit) was applied. This research found that educational level, family income and gender are the key socioeconomic determinants of economic reintegration in the population under study. Finally, the scholar community is invited to carry out studies of this type in order to understand the factors that can affect the economic re- integration of ex-combatants across the country. These analyzes provide critical information for designing more successful reintegration programs for insurgent groups, considering that Colombia is currently going through a massive demobilization process which will require a successful reintegration program that pre- vent former combatants from recidivism.

Evaluation of water dynamics of contour-levee irrigation system in sloped rice fields in Colombia

Contour-levee irrigation system is commonly used for rice cultivation in Latin American and Caribbean countries, but its water dynamics in commercial farm field settings are yet to be fully determined. This study aimed to investigate the water dynamics of the contour-levee irrigation system by analyzing conventional irrigation practices and by quantifying water balance and additionally to examine potential toposequential effects. Field experiments with different irrigation intervals were conducted on three commercial farms in Ibagué, Colombia for two seasons from 2017 to 2018. Irrigation and runoff water flows were constantly measured during the crop cycle using Parshall flumes with water level sensors. Percolation rate and field water table were measured using percolators and piezometers installed along the toposequence. The results showed that conventional irrigation management was highly flexible depending on soil permeability, rainfall, and agronomic factors, not particularly paying attention to ensure the flooded conditions during flowering period. The water balance resulted in the irrigation accounting for 76% of the total water input, whereas the runoff, ET, and percolation accounted for 40%, 21%, and 31% on overall average with considerable variation among the three farms. Percolation rates and duration with standing water did not show a clear and consistent tendency among the toposequential positions, but the percolation rate was significantly different among the farms corresponding to soil permeability. Consequently, clear toposequential effects on the water dynamics or on grain yield were not observed at the study site. To our knowledge, this study is the first to elucidate detailed water dynamics of contour-levee irrigation system in farm fields including toposequential difference

Estrategias de reintegración económica implementadas en procesos DDR durante el siglo XXI: una revisión sistemática de la literatura

In this paper a systematic literature review is carried out with the purpose of studying the economic reintegration strategies implemented in some countries during the 21st Century. The countries selected for review in the methodological framework were Burundi, Angola, Sudan, Indonesia, Ivory Coast, Central African Republic, Republic of Congo, Chad and Colombia. From the review of each of the strategies, it was concluded that the lack of planning is the main reason why some DDR processes do not have the expected success, on the other hand, it was found that the support of international entities such as the United Nations, World Bank and International Labor Organization can make a great contribution to the economic reintegration of ex-combatants.

A Functional Pipeline of Genome-Wide Association Data Leads to Midostaurin as a Repurposed Drug for Alzheimer’s Disease

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) constitute a powerful tool to identify the different biochemical pathways associated with disease. This knowledge can be used to prioritize drugs targeting these routes, paving the road to clinical application. Here, we describe DAGGER (Drug Repositioning by Analysis of GWAS and Gene Expression in R), a straightforward pipeline to find currently approved drugs with repurposing potential. As a proof of concept, we analyzed a meta-GWAS of 1.6 × 107 single-nucleotide polymorphisms performed on Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Our pipeline uses the Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) and Drug Gene Interaction (DGI) databases for a rational prioritization of 22 druggable targets. Next, we performed a two-stage in vivo functional assay. We used a C. elegans humanized model over-expressing the Aβ1-42 peptide. We assayed the five top-scoring candidate drugs, finding midostaurin, a multitarget protein kinase inhibitor, to be a protective drug. Next, 3xTg AD transgenic mice were used for a final evaluation of midostaurin’s effect. Behavioral testing after three weeks of 20 mg/kg intraperitoneal treatment revealed a significant improvement in behavior, including locomotion, anxiety-like behavior, and new-place recognition. Altogether, we consider that our pipeline might be a useful tool for drug repurposing in complex diseases. This work was mainly financed by Programa Operativo FEDER funds from the European Union through grant UMA20-FEDERJA-133.
