Examining Retirement Housing Preferences Among International Retiree Migrants

Housing demand models based on individual consumers' utility function reflect preferences about the structure and lot, neighborhood, and location as related to socioeconomic characteristics of the occupants. As a growing proportion of aging residents in many countries are undertaking late life moves, their preferences will have an influence on destination housing markets. We examine the characteristics, attitudes and preferences about retirement housing among immigrant retirees currently living in traditional housing in a retirement destination in Alicante, Spain. Using results from a survey of German and British retirees living in the region, we find through logistic regression that preference for retirement housing is associated with aging and gaining access to in-home support services.Housing preferences; Demographic trends; Seniors housing

Wild edible plants as potential antioxidants in vegetables oils

The effect of the addition of fruits of Rosa canina and Quercus ballota and leaves of Sanguisorba minor to sunflower, seed, and olive oils on lipid oxidation during the frying process was analyzed.The three underutilised edible plants increased the oxidative stability of the sunflower oil, since the malondialdehyde (MDA) content was significantly decreased with respect to values of the control sunflower oil after the heating process. However, in olive oil, the effect of these edible plants on decreasing the lipid peroxidation was only evident for the highest concentration, while in seed oil the addition of the edible plant showed a prooxidant effect.Thus, these wild edible plants could be used to enrich vegetable oils with low content of natural antioxidant, such as sunflower oil, and avoid or decrease the use of synthetic antioxidant

Menores infractores e intervención asistida con animales: un estudio de caso en Fundación Diagrama y el papel del Trabajo Social

El presente Trabajo de Fin de Grado se inscribe en el ámbito del Trabajo Social. A lo largo de todo el documento se presenta una revisión bibliográfica con el fin de poder investigar más a fondo sobre la intervención asistida con animales en menores infractores. Se diferencia por un lado el ámbito de menores, incluyendo la legislación pertinente, medidas, aquello que resulta relevante con respecto al sistema judicial y un apartado en el que se detalla el papel del trabajador social con este colectivo. Del mismo modo, se realiza un recorrido sobre la intervención asistida con animales, los tipos y beneficios, y es por ello que la segunda parte del trabajo consiste en un estudio de caso, donde se incluye una entrevista semiestructurada realizada a la trabajadora social de Fundación Diagrama en Valladolid, lo que nos permite acercarnos más al tema a tratar ya que en ella se refleja su experiencia y opinión sobre ello.This Final Degree Project is part of the field of Social Work. Throughout the document, a bibliographic review is presented in order to be able to investigate more thoroughly on animal-assisted intervention with juvenile offenders. On the one hand, the scope of minors is differentiated, including the relevant legislation, measures, what is relevant with respect to the judicial system and a section detailing the role of the social worker with this group. Likewise, there is a review of animal-assisted intervention, its types and benefits, and that is why the second part of the work consists of a case study, which includes a semi-structured interview with the social worker of Fundación Diagrama in Valladolid, which allows us to get closer to the subject to be dealt with, since it reflects her experience and opinion.Grado en Trabajo Socia

Un estudio sobre el machismo invisible

El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo principal evaluar las conductas y actitudes encubiertas y sutiles de violencia contra las mujeres y su aceptación social. Para ello, se analizarán algunos mecanismos que sustentan y fomentan el sistema patriarcal (los micromachismos, las creencias sexistas, los estereotipos de géneor, la violencia cultural y estructural, el mito del amor romántico, el sexismo, el seximos ambivalente, etc.). En el estudio de campo se evaluarán las creencias y estereotipos de género de los participantes mediante la adaptación española (Expósito, Moya y Glick, 1998) de la Escala de Sexismo Ambivalene (Glick y Fiske, 1996). Los resultados del estudio de campo muestran que existe una correlación positiiva entre SH y SB que explicaría el sexismo ambivalente, y que en general los hombres y las personas de más de 40 años presentan puntuaciones significativamente superiores respecto a las mujeres y a las personas de menos de 40 años

Wild edible plants as potential antioxidant or nutritional supplements for beverages minimally processed

Wild edible plants (WEP) with high antioxidant capacity, Rosa canina fruits, Quercus ballota acorns and Sanguisorba minor (young leaves and stems), were added to orange and kiwifruit juices for increase the nutritional properties. The addition of WEP to orange juice (OJ) and kiwifruit cremogenate (KC) does not affect, or it can even improve, some parameters of consumer's acceptance, although the mixtures increasing sweetness and intensifying the matrix colour without changing the tone are the best valued. The beverages minimally processed with higher TSS were the matrices fortified with Q. ballota, the same that were considered sweetest by the judges. The addition of WEP to OJ did not significantly change the levels of vitamin C (ascorbic acid plus dehydroascorbic acid). The addition of R. canina and S. minor increased the content of phenolic compounds and antioxidant capacity in both matrices (OJ and KC) in more than 30%. Beverages with a high interest for consumers and with high antioxidant properties have been obtained

Breast mammographic Density: stromal implications on breast cancer detection and therapy

Current evidences state clear that both normal development of breast tissue as well as its malignant progression need many-sided local and systemic communications between epithelial cells and stromal components. During development, the stroma, through remarkably regulated contextual signals, affects the fate of the different mammary cells regarding their specification and differentiation. Likewise, the stroma can generate tumour environments that facilitate the neoplastic growth of the breast carcinoma. Mammographic density has been described as a risk factor in the development of breast cancer and is ascribed to modifications in the composition of breast tissue, including both stromal and glandular compartments. Thus, stroma composition can dramatically affect the progression of breast cancer but also its early detection since it is mainly responsible for the differences in mammographic density among individuals. This review highlights both the pathological and biological evidences for a pivotal role of the breast stroma in mammographic density, with particular emphasis on dense and malignant stromas, their clinical meaning and potential therapeutic implications for breast cancer patients
