    A simple and precise methodology to determine particulate matter mass in atmospheric filters; validation and application cases

    In the past decades, particulate matter (PM) measurements have been used extensively in atmospheric sciences, as it allows studying the evolution of tracers for different atmospheric processes and the effects of atmospheric pollution on human health. However, measuring PM mass requires a constant control of the laboratory conditions due to its capacity to absorb humidity. For this reason, this study was focused on developing a novel, simple and precise methodology to determine the corrections of the filter mass due to humidity changes. The control and corrections are possible using a “control filter”, which is always adapted to the environmental conditions of the laboratory. To check the consistency of this method, it was proved that the mass of any problem filter and that of the control filter behave in a very similar way. This allows quantifying the mass changes of any problem filter by using the control filter, where the problem filters and the control filter must have the same chemical composition and dimensions. To validate this methodology, a comparison was made between the methodology proposed in this study (Method-1) and the one proposed by the EPA (Method-2), which is generally applied. The particulate matter mass (m) was obtained for a problem filter for different weights, achieving similar values using both methods. However, Method-1 still provided reliable mass measurements for relative humidities very different from 50%, even as low as 18%. It was also proved that the adsorption or loss of water by the particulate matter can be neglected, since m is much smaller than the blank filter mass.     Nas próximas décadas os indivíduos com mais de 60 anos duplicarão e os indivíduos com mais de 80 anos quadruplicarão. A perda de independência ocorre devido a vários fatores (restrições à mobilidade, fragilidade, etc.). Conclusões: Quando se prescreve exercicio ou programas de promoção da saúde tendo como alvo populações idênticas às deste estudo, deve existir uma atenção especial para as atividades de marcha e atividades que utilizam as mãos (motricidade fina), uma vez que estes componentes específicos parecem ter um maior impacto na aptidão física functional. Programas adequados e políticas adequadas mostraram contribuir para manter adultos mais velhos saudáveis e independentes ao longo do tempo com um impacto social, financial e suporte de saúde pública positivo. Os resultados apontam para a importância da prescrição de exercício conciso tendo como alvo adultos mais velhos. Deve ser dada mais atenção especificamente à marcha e a atividades manuais como componentes de um programa de exercício comunitário, como objetivo de aumentar o envelhecimento ativo e saudável.Também uma maior atenção deve ser dada às estruturas ambientais (parques, jardins públicos, etc.), de modo a aumentar as atividades de marcha para todos, especialmente para os mais velhos.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    The Role of Rehabilitative Ultrasound Imaging Technique in the Lumbopelvic Region as a Diagnosis and Treatment Tool in Physiotherapy: Systematic Review, Meta-Analysis and Meta-Regression.

    Rehabilitative ultrasound imaging (RUSI) technique seems to be a valid and reliable tool for diagnosis and treatment in physiotherapy and has been widely studied in the lumbopelvic region the last three decades. The aims for this utility in clinical settings must be review through a systematic review, meta-analysis and meta-regression. A systematic review was designed following the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines with PROSPERO registration and per review in all phases of the process using COVIDENCE, analysis of risk of bias and meta-analysis using REVMAN, and meta-regression calculation using STATA. Database screening provided 6544 references, out of which 321 reported narrative synthesis, and 21 reported quantitative synthesis, while only 7 of them provided comparable data to meta-analyze the variables pain and muscle thickness. In most cases, the forest plots showed considerable I2 heterogeneity indexes for multifidus muscle thickness (I2 = 95%), low back pain (I2 = 92%) and abdominal pain (I2 = 95%), not important for transversus abdominis muscle thickness (I2 = 22%), significant heterogenity (I2 = 69%) depending on the subgroup and not important internal oblique muscle thickness (I2 = 0%) and external oblique muscle thickness (I2 = 0%). Meta-regression did not provide significant data for the correlations between the variables analyzed and the intervention, age, and BMI (Body Mass Index). This review reveals that RUSI could contribute to a high reliability of the measurements in the lumbopelvic region with validity and reliability for the assessments, as well as showing promising results for diagnosis and intervention assessment in physiotherapy compared to the traditional model, allowing for future lines of research in this area.post-print835 K

    Validity and Reliability of Methods for Sonography Education in Physiotherapy: Onsite vs. Online.

    Background: in physiotherapy, the interest in sonography education has been increasing in recent decades, giving rise to opportunities in education in an attempt to meet the elevated demand. In other health professions, online education has demonstrated to be of interest, and another possibility by which to obtain knowledge. Methods: this exploratory observational prospective study compared the outcomes between onsite versus online education, and was approved by the ethics committee of the Francisco de Vitoria University. Two groups (onsite and online) with 136 attendants and two levels for each (basic and advanced) received the same content but through different presentations. Theoretical exams were conducted via “Kahoot” and practical exams using phantoms, and the results were subject to statistical analyses. Results: the average age of onsite participants was 29.5 (25–35.25) years and 34 (28.5–40.5) for the online participants, with a higher percentage of women. The average score ranks in the Kahoot_basic test were higher for both online groups corresponding to basic (group 1) and advanced (group 2) levels: 7 (6.5, 7.5) for group 1 and 7 (6.5, 8.5) for group 2 vs. the onsite groups: 6 (5.5, 7) for group 1 and 6 (5, 6.5) for group 2. In the practical exam, the model detected that a small negative difference between the Onsite 2 group and the total effect was significant with a low effect size (R2adjusted = 0.025) for the measurements of the hollow structure; the difference between the Online 2 and Onsite 1 group was positive (1.5026, SE = 0.5822) and significant (t = 2.5809, p = 0.0113), with a low effect size (R2adjusted = 0.016) for the solid structure depth measurement. Conclusions: the results showed that there could be an opportunity to access sonography knowledge through online education in physical therapy compared to the traditional onsite model.     On the system performance of DFT-S-OFDM and CP-OFDM for 5G Uplink in mmWave band

    Both conventional Cyclic Prefix Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (CP-OFDM) and Discrete Fourier Transform Spread OFDM (DFT-S-OFDM) have been adopted for their use in the Physical Uplink Shared Channel (PUSCH) in the 5G New Radio (NR) standard. While CP-OFDM can better exploit the frequency characteristics of the channel, DFTS-OFDM has the advantage of a lower peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). Due to the interactions between PAPR and power amplifier (PA) non-linearity, users adopting DFT-S-OFDM waveform may benefit from a potentially higher PA efficiency and extend their coverage by increasing their transmit power.     Introduction: The objective of the study is to describe the clinical, pathological, virological and genetic characteristics ofthe immune response of patients diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 infection and its relationship with the unfavorable courseof the disease. Methods: Descriptive, relational, longitudinal and retrospective study based on the review of medicalrecords, taking post-mortem tru-cut biopsies of the lung and liver, taking blood samples and naso-oropharyngeal swabor endotracheal tube aspirate. In the first phase, the biopsies will be processed and studied with conventional andimmunohistochemical histology in the Pathological Anatomy service of the Carlos Seguín Escobedo National Hospitalin Arequipa, Peru. Results: Advanced mean age, male sex, and the presence of comorbidities were predominant indeceased patients. Lung biopsies showed predominantly the exudative and partially proliferative phases of diffuseand focal alveolar damage, associated primarily with intraalveolar macrophage hyperplasia with accumulation withinthe alveolar space-resembling desquamative pneumonia, as well as atypical binucleated intraalveolar pneumocytes,with eosinophilic nucleoli (similar to virocytes) in some cases. In the vast majority of cases, intravascular fibrin depositsassociated with the accumulation of inflammatory cells composed of neutrophils and monocytes, representingmicrothrombosis, were observed. Liver biopsies showed predominantly macrovesicular steatosis and in twocases microvesicular steatosis was observed. Additionally, varying degrees of necrosis and mild portal and lobularinflammation were observed. Conclusion: The clinical and pathological findings in this first report are consistent withprevious publications and confirm the pattern of diffuse alveolar damage associated with aggregates of intraalveolarmacrophages and microthrombosis; confirms in addition, macro and microvesicular hepatocytic steatosis, togetherwith variable degrees of necrosis.Introducción: El objetivo del estudio es describir las características clínicas, patológicas, virológicas y genéticas de larespuesta inmune de los pacientes diagnosticados con infección por SARS-CoV-2 y su relación con el curso desfavorablede la enfermedad. Métodos: Estudio descriptivo, relacional, longitudinal y retrospectivo basado en la revisión dehistorias clínicas, toma de biopsias tru-cut post-mortem de pulmón e hígado, toma de muestras de sangre e hisopadonaso-orofaríngeo o de aspirado del tubo endotraqueal. En la primera fase las biopsias serán procesadas y estudiadascon histología convencional e inmunohistoquímica en el servicio de Anatomía Patológica del hospital NacionalCarlos Seguín Escobedo de Arequipa, Perú. Resultados: La edad media avanzada, el sexo masculino y la presencia decomorbilidades fue predominante en los pacientes fallecidos. Las biopsias pulmonares mostraron predominantementelas fases exudativa y parcialmente proliferativa del daño alveolar difuso y focal, asociada principalmente a unahiperplasia de macrófagos intraalveolares con acumulación dentro del espacio alveolar, semejando una neumoníadescamativa, así como neumocitos intraalveolares binucleados y atípicos, con nucléolos eosinofílicos (semejante avirocitos) en algunos casos. En la gran mayoría de casos se observaron depósitos de fibrina intravascular asociadaal acúmulo de células inflamatorias compuestas por neutrófilos y monocitos, representando microtrombosis. Lasbiopsias de hígado mostraron esteatosis predominantemente macrovesicular y en dos casos se observó esteatosismicrovesicular. Adicionalmente, se observaron diversos grados de necrosis e inflamación portal y lobular. Conclusión:Los hallazgos clínicos y patológicos en este primer reporte son consistentes con publicaciones previas y confirmanel patrón de daño alveolar difuso asociado a agregados de macrofagos intraalveolares y microtrombosis; ademasesteatosis macro y microvesicular hepatocitica, junto a grados variables de necrosis

    Quality of life of patients with metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma initiating first-line chemotherapy in routine practice

    Background: Despite advances in surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, pancreatic adenocarcinoma often progresses rapidly and causes death. The physical decline of these patients is expected to impact their quality of life (QoL). Therefore, in addition to objective measures of effectiveness, the evaluation of health-related QoL should be considered a matter of major concern when assessing therapy outcomes. Methods: Observational, prospective, multicenter study including patients with metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma who started first-line chemotherapy in 12 Spanish centers. Treatment and clinical characteristics were recorded at baseline. Patients' health-related quality of life, ECOG, and Karnofsky index were measured at baseline, at Days 15 and 30, and every four weeks up to 6months of chemotherapy. Health-related quality of life was measured using the EORTC-QLQ-C30 and EQ-5D questionnaires. Other endpoints included overall survival and progression-free survival. Results: The study sample included 116 patients (median age of 65years). Mean (SD) scores for the QLQ-C30 global health status scale showed a significant increasing trend throughout the treatment (p=0.005). Patients with either a Karnofsky index of 70-80 or ECOG 2 showed greater improvement in the QLQ-C30 global health status score than the corresponding groups with better performance status (p 50 at baseline had significantly greater overall survival and progression-free survival (p=0.005 and p=0.021, respectively). No significant associations were observed regarding the EQ-5D score. Conclusions: Most metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma patients receiving first-line chemotherapy showed an increase in health-related quality of life scores throughout the treatment. Patients with lower performance status and health-related quality of life at baseline tended to greater improvement.
