    Side Effects of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Biased Task Performance in a Cognitive Neuroscience Study

    Summary:: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is increasingly used as a research tool for functional brain mapping in cognitive neuroscience. Despite being mostly tolerable, side effects of TMS could influence task performance in behavioural TMS studies. In order to test this issue, healthy subjects assessed the discomfort caused by the stimulation during a verbal working memory task. We investigated the relation between subjective disturbance and task performance. Subjects were stimulated during the delay period of a delayed-match-to-sample task above cortical areas that had been identified before to be involved in working memory. Task performance and subjective disturbance due to side effects were monitored. The subjects' grade of discomfort correlated with the error rates: the higher the discomfort, the more errors were made. Conclusively, TMS side effects may bias task performance in cognitive neuroscience studies and may thereby lead to misinterpretation of results. We emphasize the importance of controlling side effects of the stimulation as a source of biasing effects in TMS studie

    A New Automatic Method to Identify Galaxy Mergers I. Description and Application to the STAGES Survey

    We present an automatic method to identify galaxy mergers using the morphological information contained in the residual images of galaxies after the subtraction of a Sersic model. The removal of the bulk signal from the host galaxy light is done with the aim of detecting the fainter minor mergers. The specific morphological parameters that are used in the merger diagnostic suggested here are the Residual Flux Fraction and the asymmetry of the residuals. The new diagnostic has been calibrated and optimized so that the resulting merger sample is very complete. However, the contamination by non-mergers is also high. If the same optimization method is adopted for combinations of other structural parameters such as the CAS system, the merger indicator we introduce yields merger samples of equal or higher statistical quality than the samples obtained through the use of other structural parameters. We explore the ability of the method presented here to select minor mergers by identifying a sample of visually classified mergers that would not have been picked up by the use of the CAS system, when using its usual limits. Given the low prevalence of mergers among the general population of galaxies and the optimization used here, we find that the merger diagnostic introduced in this work is best used as a negative merger test, i.e., it is very effective at selecting non-merging galaxies. As with all the currently available automatic methods, the sample of merger candidates selected is contaminated by non-mergers, and further steps are needed to produce a clean sample. This merger diagnostic has been developed using the HST/ACS F606W images of the A901/02 cluster (z=0.165) obtained by the STAGES team. In particular, we have focused on a mass and magnitude limited sample (log M/M_{O}>9.0, R_{Vega}<23.5mag)) which includes 905 cluster galaxies and 655 field galaxies of all morphological types.Comment: 25 pages, 14 figures, 4 tables.     Safety and pharmacokinetic assessments of a novel ivermectin nasal spray formulation in a pig model

    Recently published data indicates that high ivermectin (IVM) concentrations suppress in vitro SARS-CoV-2 replication. Nasal IVM spray administration may contribute to attaining high drug concentrations in nasopharyngeal tissue, a primary site of virus entrance/replication. The safety and pharmacokinetic performances of a novel IVM spray formulation were assessed in a pig model. Piglets received IVM either orally (0.2 mg/kg) or by one or two nasal spray doses. The overall safety, and histopathology of the IVM-spray application site tissues, were assessed. The IVM concentration profiles measured in plasma and respiratory tract tissues after the nasal spray were compared with those achieved after the oral administration. Animals tolerated well the nasal spray formulation. No local/systemic adverse events were observed. After nasal administration, the highest IVM concentrations were measured in nasopharyngeal and lung tissues. The nasal/oral IVM concentration ratios in nasopharyngeal and lung tissues markedly increased by repeating (12 h apart) the spray application. The fast attainment of high and persistent IVM concentrations in nasopharyngeal tissue is the main advantage of the nasal over the oral route. These original results support the undertaking of future clinical trials to evaluate the safety/efficacy of the nasal IVM spray application in the prevention and/or treatment of COVID-19.Fil: Errecalde, Jorge Oscar.     The Limited Influence of Pressure Gradients on Late-type Stellar Line Asymmetries

    Line asymmetries and shifts are a powerful tool for studying velocity fields in the stellar photospheres. Other effects, however, could also generate asymmetries blurring the information of the velocity patterns. We have studied the shifts and asymmetries induced in the profiles of spectral lines by pressure effects. The best theoretical and experimental data on line broadening and shifts caused by collisions with atomic hydrogen were used to analyze the NaI D and three CaI lines. Line bisectors of synthetic spectra computed with accurate data for the NaI and CaI lines are compared with very high resolution high signal-to-noise ratio solar spectra and indicate that pressure broadening reproduces the wings of the observed lines, but pressure shifts introduce neither asymmetries nor shifts comparable to the observed ones.Comment: Latex file (19 pages), uses aasms4.sty, 5 Postscript figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journa

    Intraocular emulsion of silicone oil (ITEMS) grading system

    Producción CientíficaABSTRACT. PURPOSE: To propose the InTraocular EMulsion of Silicone oil (ITEMS) grading system for the assessment of silicone oil (SiO) emulsion, applicable in a routine clinical setting and validated through an expert-led consensus procedure. METHODS: Seven experts on intraocular liquid tamponades, led by a facilitator, performed a literature review on the detection of SiO emulsion. Based on the proposed ideas, a questionnaire was developed and submitted to the experts on the methods to detect SiO emulsion and the items to grade. After two rounds of individual ranking using a nine-point scale and related discussion, the final grading system was developed including items that reached consensus (score ≥7 from ≥75% of members). RESULTS: The agreed ITEMS grading system includes the quantification of SiO microbubbles and large SiO bubbles through slit lamp biomicroscopy, gonioscopy, fundus examination under mydriasis or ultra-widefield fundus photography. Moreover, macular and disc OCT are used to detect SiO-associated hyperreflective dots. CONCLUSION: An evidence-based expert-led consensus was conducted to develop grading system of SiO emulsion, allowing, for the first time, homogenous collection of data on SiO emulsion. This has the potential to improve our understanding of the role and clinical relevance of SiO emulsion allowing comparisons between different studies

    Microsatellite typing and susceptibilities of serial Cryptococcus neoformans isolates from Cuban patients with recurrent cryptococcal meningitis

    Contains fulltext : 124337.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access)BACKGROUND: Cryptococcus neoformans is commonly associated with meningoencephalitis in immunocompromised patients and occasionally in apparently healthy individuals. Recurrence of infection after initial treatment is not uncommon. We studied C. neoformans isolates from 7 Cuban patients with recurrent cryptococcal meningitis. Antifungal susceptibility and genotyping with microsatellite molecular typing were carried out. METHODS: Isolates (n = 19) were recovered from cerebrospinal fluid, blood, urine and semen. Antifungal susceptibilities for amphotericin B, fluconazole, flucytosine, itraconazole, voriconazole, posaconazole and isavuconazole were tested by CLSI M27A3 broth microdilution method. Genotyping was done using a panel of 9 microsatellite (STR) markers: (CT)n, (TG)n, (TA)n, (CTA)n, (TCT)n, (CCA)n, (TTAT)n, (ATCC)n and (TATT)n. RESULTS: The average number of isolates/patient was 2.71. The mean time interval between the collection of any two isolates was 52.5 days. All strains were identified as C. neoformans var. grubii (serotype Aalpha). Although none of the strains were resistant to the studied drugs, in serial isolates from two patients, MICs values of triazoles increased 4-5 log2 dilutions over time. STR patterns showed 14 distinctive profiles. In three patients the recurrent infection was associated with genotypically identical isolates. The four other patients had relapse isolates which were genotypically different from the initial infecting strain. CONCLUSION: Recurrences of cryptococcal meningitis in our series of patients was not associated with development of drug resistance of the original strain but by an initial infection with different strains or a reinfection with a new strain

    Quality of life and eating disorders: a systematic review

    This article provides a systematic review of articles on quality of life (QoL) among individuals with eating disorders. A literature search was conducted using six databases. Manual searches were also performed in two specialized journals, covering the period from January 1975 to June 2008. The search strategies identified a total of 29,537 articles. Forty-one studies met the inclusion criteria, and 36 were analyzed in the present review. Patients with eating disorders showed reduced QoL as compared to normal controls and individuals with other psychiatric disorders. The mental health component of QoL showed greater impairment than the physical component. Patients with binge eating disorders showed reduced physical and psychological QoL. We identified few studies on QoL in bulimia nervosa-only patients. QoL assessment of anorexia nervosa patients showed a modest impact on the physical domain. However, this finding should be interpreted with caution, since it may be due to an artifact in the disorder's psychopathology rather than better health status per se.O objetivo foi fazer uma revisão sistemática dos estudos que avaliam qualidade de vida em pessoas com transtornos alimentares. Foram realizadas buscas bibliográficas em seis bases de dados e buscas manuais em duas revistas, abrangendo o período de janeiro de 1975 até junho de 2008. As estratégias de busca forneceram um total de 29.537 referências. Quarenta e um estudos preencheram os critérios de inclusão desta revisão e 36 foram analisados no presente trabalho. De modo geral, os estudos revelam prejuízos na qualidade de vida de pacientes com transtornos alimentares quando comparados a grupos normais ou outras patologias psiquiátricas. O aspecto mental da qualidade de vida mostra-se mais prejudicado. A avaliação da qualidade de vida em sujeitos com transtorno da compulsão alimentar periódica revela prejuízos nos aspectos físico e mental da qualidade de vida. Há pouca evidência e discussão para indivíduos com bulimia nervosa isoladamente.     Ivermectin repurposing for COVID-19 therapy: Safety and pharmacokinetic assessment of a novel nasal spray formulation in a pig model

    High ivermectin (IVM) concentrations suppress in vitro SARS-CoV-2 replication. Nasal IVM spray (N-IVM-spray) administration may contribute to attaining high drug concentrations in nasopharyngeal (NP) tissue, a primary site of virus entrance/replication. The safety and pharmacokinetic performance of a new N-IVM spray formulation in a piglet model were assessed. Crossbred piglets (10–12 kg) were treated with either one or two (12 h apart) doses of N-IVM-spray (2 mg, 1 puff/nostril) or orally (0.2 mg/kg). The overall safety of N-IVM-spray was assessed (clinical, haematological, serum biochemical determinations), and histopathology evaluation of the application site tissues performed. The IVM concentration profiles measured in plasma and respiratory tract tissues (nasopharynx and lungs) after the nasal spray treatment (one and two applications) were compared with those achieved after the oral administration. Animals tolerated well the novel N–IVM-spray formulation. No local/systemic adverse events were observed. After nasal administration, the highest IVM concentrations were measured in NP and lung tissues. Significant increases in IVM concentration profiles in both NP-tissue and lungs were observed after the 2-dose nasal administrations. The nasal/oral IVM concentration ratios in NP and lung tissues (at 6 h post-dose) markedely increased by repeating the spray application. The fast attainment of high and persistent IVM concentrations in NP tissue is the main advantage of the nasal over the oral route.
